Description I had great fun writing the lyrics to this piece. Lists on lists of rhyming attributes, verbs, and phrases that helped illustrate the thrill and surprise of love. I wrote this song originally as a slow, swaying peaceful love anthem, and then my nephew, Chris, came over and replayed the piano part with a Broadway inflection that now makes it sounds like it could be from the show Chess. Twon (the MacJams member twonicus), added high vocal harmonies in the chorus. I am especially proud of the lyrics and the chorus. And I love Twon's vocals: Thanks! (Artwork by Edward Hopper.)
Lyrics DOOR IN MY HEART

What changes us, arranges us,
soon estranges all we once held near,
justifies our want and lapse,
these boundaries called a man?

What merges us, and furthers us,
then diverges from what was once dear,
binding what we are to what we fear?

What chooses us, excuses us,
then confuses what was once so clear,
tearing up in daily life
answers once so true and real?

What traces us, embraces us,
then replaces in one silent tear
the ocean of a living soul...
when love is locked away?

There's a door in my heart,
a door without a key.

What summons us, condenses us,
and shatters self-defenses thus?
What can bring us joy again
if love is locked away?

I thought I'd lived all that I could of life...
and then you walked in.

There's a door in my heart and it's opened to you.
There's a door to that greater part of me.
There's a door that was locked and hidden away.
Only you take me through that threshold.
Only you open up the world.
Open up that secret world.

What dreams us, forms between us,
what redeems us in this happy way?
What makes us worth our lives again,
if love is locked away?
Hardware G4; Roland a90ex controller/keyboard. Thanks to Twon for the extra vocals. Thanks to Chris for the piano re-arrangement.
Software: DP 4; GB.

being from nyc originally i'm partial to broadway lyrical
creations....this piece takes me back to memories of
shows on and off and off off broadway....thanks Tobin...

I love broadway.....
Thanks. Yes, the song craft of the 30s-50s is something I miss hearing in
today's music. It's great to be appreciated. I work hard on shaping melodies
and, even tho I disguise it with care, I break harmonic rules all the time to try
and create a unique sound within the genre. Thanks for the comment.

beautiful
wow. love the lyrics. made me think. love the variations of the melody, and the build into the chorus, way at the end in an unusual format, is really great. you have to give this song enough time to grow, like a good relationship. thanks for another amazing song. it is on my hit list! it left me feel really great. thanks again.---morning girl

another great Tobin track
Edward Hopper, of course. Painted in 1951. I knew that. Oops. I was
thinking of my close friend Eric Green, another painter, who loved Hopper,
and I mixed up the two names. Good catch. Clicking on the image shows an
enlargement of the art. Great painting.

The verse, if that's what it's called, sounds a tad familiar.
But overall, Pretty. I envision this definitely being sung on
a stage somewhere

Excellent lyrics
Love the poetry in the lyrics. So much I have to listen, step back, read. So much. Some of the best lyrics I have ever encountered. Perfect for the anthem feel.

Sing my heart open
Wow. You're a master of lyrics as well as tunes. You sing like a wise man from a mountain top. With the power of Billy Joel, but compeltely different. I saw that door, your waiting, the openness. Just a perfect song and a wonderful build, slow and cautious, until a hughe chorus. Really excellent.

I'm humming along
Love this song, Tobin! This is one of those that makes me want to sing along when I listen to it. Must be that Broadway blood runnin' through me.

I'm humming along
Thanks, Emily. I think I was listening to too much Sondheim when I wrote
these lyrics. I always (well, almost) try to create singable melodies, thanks for
hearing that. You can sing along with me any time!

I thought the last one was my favorite
Then I run into this one.

Like I told "Daphne" in a post to one of her tunes.

D@$$n your talented!

Reminds me of Chicago and Peter Cetera. Sorry, but I
can't get Larry Gatlin out of my mind in hearing your
incredible tunes, >vocals

I thought the last one was my favorite
This is one of those songs where I write the lyrics first, work hard on them,
and then wrote an anthem that seemed too stiff for such a wordy song, and
then had to go back and forth (with my nephew Chris' help) to create a more
fluid feel so that the two would work together. I appreciate your careful
listening. Thanks for working thru my macjams catalog!
