Keywords Hanukkah (2)Chanukah (1)Chanukkah (1)Hanuka (1)Hanukkah (2)spelling (1)rap (192)hip-hop (71)
Description I wrote this "Rap" (if you can call it that) for my 8th grade choir. I pray they like it and don't see how square i really am! It's about the real meaning of Hanukkah.
Lyrics Neis Gadol Haya Sham/
Our people fought for their destiny/
Neis Gadol Haya Po/
And now we fight to keep all people free/

We all seem to know the Hanukkah story/
About the miracle of oil and God's glory/
But let's not forget the real point here/
And we're gonna make it abundantly clear/
There's a lot of people around the world--/
men, women, boys and girls/
who live under oppression/
they can't do what they like/
they can't be who they are/
and if they do, they gotta take a hike/
it's the same as that tale from a long time ago/
about our ancestors who met with a foe:/
The Syrians led by Antiochus the king/
And we'll tell you all about it/
but first we gotta sing/

Neis Gadol Haya Sham/
Our people fought for their destiny/
Neis Gadol Haya Po/
And now we fight to keep all people free/

Mattathias bold/
Had five sons in his family/
and the leader of them all/
was Judah Maccabee/
He saw his people down/
they were being criticized/
And Antiochus was out to make them Hellenized/
But Judah was strong--he wasn't weak/
He'd rather die than become a Greek/
So he formed an army, banded his guys/
Stood up to those Syrians and looked 'em in the eyes/
He said, "We're the Jewish people, we're here and we're proud/
You better steer clear, away from our crowd/
we're gonna show you the door/
And if ya don't leave we'll throw you to the floor/
You defiled our altar, our temple's in a mess/
And we're not gonna take it--no we won't be repressed!"/
So Judah and his boys got medieval on their king/
the Syrians were defeated/
and the Maccabees would sing:/

Neis Gadol Haya Sham/
Our people fought for their destiny/
Neis Gadol Haya Po/
And now we fight to keep all people free/

We called it a "miracle" way back then/
when Judah and his posse took on those Greek men/
But don't you start asking, "where are the miracles today?"/
When you're the one who can fight to save the day/
There's plenty of people in plenty of lands/
Who could use a "miracle" from you and your hands/
We don't have to wait for God to say,/
"I'm going to save you now--today!"/
We have a great responsibility/
as a member of the Jewish people and humanity/
We gotta fight for the rights of those in need/
Who don't have the strength to fight to be freed/
For those in the Sudan/
or those with AIDS/
for those still in slavery/
and locked in chains/
For women's rights and equality/
it's all in the name of Señor Maccabee/
So get out your muscle/
get out of your chairs/
let all those tyrants know that they better beware/
Cuz when you oppress us and put us down/
there ain't nothin' in this world gonna push us out of town/
We're gonna fight fair and we'll fight the good fight/
But we're only gonna do it for what we know is right/
We're not gonna bow to no dictator or king/
We'll be guided by our God/
and now we're gonna sing:/

Neis Gadol Haya Sham/
Our people fought for their destiny/
Neis Gadol Haya Po/
And now we fight to keep all people free/

Ma Zeh?
A Jewish rap? lol Don't think I've ever heard anything like it.

I like it. I downloaded it. I'm a fan. Very unique.

Great lyrics
that kept me engaged, and I like the way the refrain comes in.

Hey!
This is pretty good,
I like the fact that you have done it for your choir group.
Very unique indeed and brilliant lyrics.

important message
It's great that you are reaching out to "the youth of today"
with this rap song, since the genre is so popular.

Excellent lyrics and very important message, for us all
actually. This song gave good historical background for
the religious holiday, and also called everyone to action in
today's troubled world.

Good production in general....although I would have liked
to hear the Hebrew phrases in a louder, more distinctive
style. Something a bit more "catchy".

wonderful job!
Spongebob Square Pants you are not.

Kids are still pretty impressionable in the 8th grade. I'll
bet they will be singing this lesson at home to their little
sisters and brothers.

I'm not spongebob?
damn! i really, really want to be the spongebob. I aspire to be the spongebob.
Perhaps one day, i shall be the spongebob. but for now, i will have to be the
Def Masta Jamma Rappa--word! (gawd, i sound so very suburban, it hurts).

Incredible
Incredible concept. Incredible lyrics. Incredible dynamic
sound quality. How much did that Plantronics mic cost?

8-9-8-8

Cantor said 1484 days ago
Incredible
the plantronics mic was about $50 i think. fun mike for simple vocals. for
more beefy stuff, i have a proper condenser microphone.

Nice Jewish boy rap.
This is crying out for a Beastie Boys cover. What a great way to tell the story and the message.
