Description This is an old Basque Carol. The words tell the story of Gabriel's visit to Mary to tell her she is going to be the mother of the Messiah. This version, however, is another Johanek Trio arrangement, played by software instruments. Clarinet, Bassoon and guitar parts are joined by software string bass and some understated percussion. Since this is an Advent carol, I decided to post it a couple of days before the Advent season begins (Sunday, Nov 30.) We are playing a service with this song in it next Sunday, and are including it in our holiday concert repertoire. The album art is a Russian Orthodox icon of the Angel Gabriel.
Hardware Good old PowerBook (which I'll have to hang on to for awhile, since Apple isn't putting firewire on the new MacBooks.)

beautiful
it indeed lifts your spirit to a better place.
Many thanks for sharing.

I found the following lyrics :

The angel Gabriel from heaven came
His wings as drifted snow his eyes as flame
"All hail" said he "thou lowly maiden Mary,
Most highly favored lady," Gloria!

"For know a blessed mother thou shalt be,
All generations laud and honor thee,
Thy Son shall be Emanuel, by seers foretold
Most highly favored lady," Gloria!

Then gentle Mary meekly bowed her head
"To me be as it pleaseth God," she said,
"My soul shall laud and magnify his holy name."
Most highly favored lady. Gloria!

Of her, Emanuel, the Christ was born
In Bethlehem, all on a Christmas morn
And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say:
"Most highly favored lady," Gloria!

Thanks
Fabien, thank you so much for posting the lyrics. I didn't take the time, and they add a lot to the piece! I'm glad you enjoyed this arrangement!

Lena-
Thanks for listening. We are playing for church on Sunday Morning, but don't have the recording capabilities for getting it recorded there. I'm hoping my daughter will be willing to play the simple percussion part for that service, but she's being difficult. (That's what being 13 years old is all about, I guess.) Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it, and Happy Advent!

Feter-
One of these days, I'm hoping and praying that you'll get a chance to come and hear us live. In the meantime, thanks for listening to the posts of the software arrangements, and your wonderful, uplifting comments.

Your assembly...
...is very lucky, indeed, to have you as its composer in residence. This is a lovely hymn and beautifully arranged in an understated yet stately manner. The renaissance feel of the guitar and winds provides a perfect instrumental setting for the song and for the season, too. Beautiful.
Peace.
Paul

Paul-
Thank you for your gracious comments. I think back to the time I really WAS a professional church musician, and how I enjoyed writing more involved arrangements for some very fine musicians. This is nice too, especially working with my own family members.

dreadmon said 41 days ago
Very sweet
Hey KJ! Isn't this tune also called "Conventry Carol"? It's one of my absolute favorites and this is a wonderful treatment. I would love to hear you and an ensemble play this live! Thanks for the blessing of this tune.

Epileptic Gibbon said 41 days ago
No
the Coventry carol sounds very different. They are both delightful tunes though.

kristyjo said 41 days ago
Bing -
They are different carols. 'Coventry Carol' is actually an English Mystery play song, sung by the mothers of the children in Bethlehem who were killed on the orders of King Herod.
Now, all that academic stuff aside, I'm delighted that you came to visit, and enjoyed the carol! I enjoy your excellent versions of traditional carols on the dulcimer. I really like this season of sharing the old songs in so many different versions.

Good golly
Wow, I've had it wrong for a while then. On the first "A Very Special Christmas", Alison Moyet sings this very tune, but it is titled "Coventry Carol." Now I'm going to look back and see what else they've mis-named. LOL! Thanks again for posting this, KJ!

Thanks
for letting me play this on the forthcoming seasonal edition of my podcast music show. Great work! I hope the service goes well next Sunday.

Ian-
I'm so glad you put out the word, way back in October. It gave me a little nudge to get started. We practiced as a group this weekend, and it's sounding pretty good, although my guitar fingers are a bit less nimble than they once were. I'm looking forward to actually playing this together.

good old...
I prefer my good old G5 (isight) over the newer models right now.
I had to hear this song twice. Its way to short. Its a great piece!
I have it booked marked for sunday morning for when I get up. very moving!!

kristyjo said 41 days ago
Hi
I think the newer models look great, are faster, and I wish they didn't lack the firewire port, because I do a lot of things for school and music that need that port. Ah well, just a little more saving, I guess, for the macBook Pro.

Thanks for listening and bookmarking. I do appreciate it!

Absolutely wonderful
So stately and yet gentle and expressive - I guess the term elegant might apply but there's a common earthiness to it that grounds it in the heart. Great work Kristyjo. Please explain - is everything midi = or are the clarinet, bassoon and guitar real?

kristyjo said 40 days ago
Bud-
This is the midi version. I write out the music as we'll play it in the Finale Music Notation program. Then, I transfer it to the GarageBand program, where I add some expressive things, breathing pauses and percussion. Our trio didn't try it out until this weekend, and we'll be playing it next week. Thanks for listening and commenting!

when artist go back in time and do something sweet, pure, innocent, reflective-historical. . .

Way to go!

Thanks for sharing and being such a great part of MJ!

These carols
These carols from Western Europe are among my favorite pieces of music. They are so different than the music of today, and have a lot of beauty in their simplicity. Thanks for listening!

quite lovely...
thanks for sharing.

Glad you got to listen.
And thanks for sharing your comments. Happy Advent!

You beat me to it!
I was just about to record a version of this! Hehe! (Just learning how to play it on the harp, so a few more practices before I'm ready to record...)

kristyjo said 37 days ago
This song
This song can certainly use more than one version. I got to listen to your version, too. Lovely!

More Knowledge..., dang-it...
You made me learn something today, KJ..., I hadda go to Wikipedia to try to know who Gabriel is/was and to be able to put into context what I was hearing. In the process, I also learned that one of my fav performers, Sting recorded this tune. And in doing so, he replaced the word "Christian", with Eeveryone". An inclusive move that made me more comfortable with what I was hearing. Ramble ramble...

Back to you, KJ, this was beautifully rendered! There was the smell of chestnuts roasting in my busy little mind as I was hearing this. Everything sounded to be so precisely placed, that it gave a new meaning to perfection, which can be a negative in music, but not so here. Very well done. It sounded like the work of a consummate musician. Maybe one day when I grow up, I'll... Never-mind...

Thanks for sharing this. You put me in the X-mas mood that I'd been resisting and it just felt, right. Made me look forward to my trip to NYC which is a most wonderful place to be this time of the year.

Dion

PS Guess I couldda read your liner notes first - wouldda saved me some time

kristyjo said 36 days ago
Dion
The teacher in me says, "ha, I got someone to learn something today!" The musician in me says," Oh, good, someone whose opinion I respect listened, and they like it!" The MacJammer in me says, " Dion! I'm so glad you're back around here! I've missed ya, buddy!" The Christmas music around here is always great to listen to, and I wanted to be a part of it this year. Thanks for letting me know you listened!

Roxylee said 37 days ago
You have such a great gift for music
to arrange all the instruments and make them all sound real, to get the timing of all the notes so perfectly, and you manage to make it feel emotionally alive. Just wonderful, Kristy. :-)

kristyjo said 36 days ago
Roxy-
Thanks for chiming in:) I enjoy the arranging part, but the fun comes when we all get together and play it. This weekend is the first 'performance' of this song live. Wish us well, and MAYBE I can get my hubby & son to record it with the real instruments.

Ejh said 36 days ago
It has the feeling of a processional...
...or a sort of march-with-a-dance, and the light percussion accents that quality... It also has that almost-modal feel of Western-meets-Moorish in the main melody line, and one can really 'hear' a vocal line...

A nice contribution to the evolving MacJams holiday season...
