Description This is an old Basque Carol. The words tell the story of Gabriel's visit to Mary to tell her she is going to be the mother of the Messiah. This version, however, is another Johanek Trio arrangement, played by software instruments. Clarinet, Bassoon and guitar parts are joined by software string bass and some understated percussion. Since this is an Advent carol, I decided to post it a couple of days before the Advent season begins (Sunday, Nov 30.) We are playing a service with this song in it next Sunday, and are including it in our holiday concert repertoire. The album art is a Russian Orthodox icon of the Angel Gabriel.

Hardware Good old PowerBook (which I'll have to hang on to for awhile, since Apple isn't putting firewire on the new MacBooks.)

	Your assembly... ...is very lucky, indeed, to have you as its composer in residence. This is a lovely hymn and beautifully arranged in an understated yet stately manner. The renaissance feel of the guitar and winds provides a perfect instrumental setting for the song and for the season, too. Beautiful. Peace. Paul

	Very sweet Hey KJ! Isn't this tune also called "Conventry Carol"? It's one of my absolute favorites and this is a wonderful treatment. I would love to hear you and an ensemble play this live! Thanks for the blessing of this tune.

	No the Coventry carol sounds very different. They are both delightful tunes though.

They are different carols. 'Coventry Carol' is actually an English Mystery play song, sung by the mothers of the children in Bethlehem who were killed on the orders of King Herod.
Now, all that academic stuff aside, I'm delighted that you came to visit, and enjoyed the carol! I enjoy your excellent versions of traditional carols on the dulcimer. I really like this season of sharing the old songs in so many different versions.

	Good golly Wow, I've had it wrong for a while then. On the first "A Very Special Christmas", Alison Moyet sings this very tune, but it is titled "Coventry Carol." Now I'm going to look back and see what else they've mis-named. LOL! Thanks again for posting this, KJ!

	Absolutely wonderful So stately and yet gentle and expressive - I guess the term elegant might apply but there's a common earthiness to it that grounds it in the heart. Great work Kristyjo. Please explain - is everything midi = or are the clarinet, bassoon and guitar real?

More Knowledge..., dang-it...
You made me learn something today, KJ..., I hadda go to Wikipedia to try to know who Gabriel is/was and to be able to put into context what I was hearing. In the process, I also learned that one of my fav performers, Sting recorded this tune. And in doing so, he replaced the word "Christian", with Eeveryone". An inclusive move that made me more comfortable with what I was hearing. Ramble ramble...

Back to you, KJ, this was beautifully rendered! There was the smell of chestnuts roasting in my busy little mind as I was hearing this. Everything sounded to be so precisely placed, that it gave a new meaning to perfection, which can be a negative in music, but not so here. Very well done. It sounded like the work of a consummate musician. Maybe one day when I grow up, I'll... Never-mind...

Thanks for sharing this. You put me in the X-mas mood that I'd been resisting and it just felt, right. Made me look forward to my trip to NYC which is a most wonderful place to be this time of the year.

	It has the feeling of a processional... ...or a sort of march-with-a-dance, and the light percussion accents that quality... It also has that almost-modal feel of Western-meets-Moorish in the main melody line, and one can really 'hear' a vocal line... A nice contribution to the evolving MacJams holiday season... Ed

	Lena- Thanks for listening. We are playing for church on Sunday Morning, but don't have the recording capabilities for getting it recorded there. I'm hoping my daughter will be willing to play the simple percussion part for that service, but she's being difficult. (That's what being 13 years old is all about, I guess.) 	Paul- Thank you for your gracious comments. I think back to the time I really WAS a professional church musician, and how I enjoyed writing more involved arrangements for some very fine musicians. This is nice too, especially working with my own family members.

	Ian- I'm so glad you put out the word, way back in October. It gave me a little nudge to get started. We practiced as a group this weekend, and it's sounding pretty good, although my guitar fingers are a bit less nimble than they once were. I'm looking forward to actually playing this together.

	Bud- This is the midi version. I write out the music as we'll play it in the Finale Music Notation program. Then, I transfer it to the GarageBand program, where I add some expressive things, breathing pauses and percussion. Our trio didn't try it out until this weekend, and we'll be playing it next week. 	Roxy- Thanks for chiming in:) I enjoy the arranging part, but the fun comes when we all get together and play it. This weekend is the first 'performance' of this song live. Wish us well, and MAYBE I can get my hubby & son to record it with the real instruments.
