Description This was the first song I posted on MacJams, and 3 years later, I've finally gotten round to re-recording it. Sometimes I move so fast, I'm a blur.

The song remains the same, with a couple of minor changes to the arrangement, but I think the sound is better, and credit for that rests with the constant, constructive feedback I've received over the past 3 years from so many people here. Talk about a learning curve. A lot of people here have taught me so much about turning the racket in my head into something worth listening to. It's been a humbling and inspiring journey, and one I'm grateful to have been on.

Special nods must go to Peter Greenstone, alley-oop, aclarke, ejh, Warren Smith & echoroom, who all listened and commented shortly after I first posted this, and whose considered, perceptive and encouraging comments made me want to hang around. You guys may not realize how much it meant to me to have someone listen to my music and react positively and constructively, rather than backing away in a panic. But trust me, it was something pretty special. If it hadn't been for you guys, I would not be still pestering innocent MacJammers with my musical stylings today! So blame them, people.

I'm also indebted to Peter_Bauckham and lavalamp for encouraging me to have another go at this. I have huge respect for you guys, and the fact that you thought this was worth revisiting was really the stimulus I needed to find the time to do it.

Special note of thanks to Peter for listening to an earlier mix and offering his usual perceptive, precise comments on the mix. Your "ear" is gold, my friend.

This may not be the last thing I do with this song, but it's remarkably close to how I hoped it would sound, and certainly a lot closer than it was 3 years ago.

Thanks again, folks. Y'all rock.

Enjoy

Peace.
Lyrics Hoping For A Hurricane

You finally get it right
Just when you think you’re wrong
And you might think you’re over it
But it’s only just begun

Talking to a fool
Swaying to the beat
Falling from a breaking cloud
And landing in a heap
And nothing is forbidden but what you want to do

It’s good to be a liar
‘Cos everything is true
It’s better to be higher
If that’s what you want to do
And you might be forsaken but what else can you do?

You’ve been waiting for that dying star
To burn and disappear
But that blessed light still shines
You’ve been hoping for a hurricane
To blow away the years
But the sun just keeps on shining

You think you’ve got it right
You might just as well be wrong
You like to think you’re over it
But it’s only just begun
And you can’t be forgiven for what you didn’t do

I’m only calling to hear your voice
I’m only talking to make some noise

Great song
Glad you re-did. You did not disappoint. Very clean production and fantastic vocal delivery. The rhythm section goes very well with this tune. I could feel the emotion on the solo.

I enjoyed this immensely.

I'm particularly glad you liked it, since your encouraging words were one of the reasons I found the time to go back and redo it. Currently working on your song A Man, and having a blast; hope you enjoy the results as much! Thanks for checking this out, and for your constant encouragement. It's much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

thanks, Peter. I really appreciate your help on this; your suggestions were spot on and I think made a real difference to the final track. Thanks for stopping by to check out the remake. I appreciate your encouragement, as always. Cheers, man. Peace.

Glad you liked this. I may yet go back and redo a few others that are floating around. It's been a fun experience. Thanks for checking this out. Much appreciated as always. Cheers. Peace.

I know exactly
what you mean about all the help and advice you've been given here, I feel the same.
Just listening to the first version as I write (I hadn't heard it before), it actually sounds pretty good to me. I wish my first was as good. Having said that the latest version is just superb and sounds very professional to me. Beautiful song and wonderful performance and production. Happy jammiversary by the way.
Cheers
Len

I'm very glad you liked this. This place really has been tremendous in terms of making everything musical I do better. The songs still may not be that good, but at least I can get it out there better, and I can't really think of a critical point someone has made about one of my postings that hasn't been on the money. I feel like I'm in good company here, and you, my friend, are one of the reasons! Thanks for checking this one out. I appreciate it, my friend. Cheers. Peace.

Never heard the first
....But I think this one was put well together. I like the acoustic rhythm, the electric guitar accompaniment in the background and the solo was really good. I'm also a fan of the organ. Great Job.

dajama said 43 days ago
Thanks, man
Glad you enjoyed the mix of instruments. I didn't really change too much from the first version; it's really just the recording that's a bit better, thanks to the advice I've gotten here from the terrific folks here at MacJams. Thanks for stopping by to check this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

You are the man. Your constant support and encouragement has been amazing. Glad you like this new version. You really hit the nail on the head about Peter's contribution; he really has a knack for recognizing elements in a mix that could be better, and I have great faith in his judgement. Thanks again for stopping by. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Lovely track
Really well composed and nice new sound, very sparkly. Really good solo guitar helps make this track awesome. Well done David.

dajama said 42 days ago
Thanks, man
I'll take "sparkly" as a description of the sound, especially since I really felt the old version was a bit muddy and flat. Glad you enjoyed this one. Thanks for stopping by to check it out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

I like the new version better David
I recently listened to the original version, and just now went back and listened to it again. I have to say the quality of the recording on this is far far superior to the first take. This one, if not already, is very close to being radio ready my friend.

As I said on the first version this is some exceptional song writing. But on this version your vocal delivery is much stronger and much more connected to the lyrics.

Top of the mark David. Bravo to you for revisiting this and doing such a wonderful job on it.

It is simply outstanding my friend.

Ed

dajama said 42 days ago
Thanks, Ed
I really appreciate your input and I'm very happy you enjoyed this version an oldie. Thanks for your kind words on the song itself, and I'm happy you enjoyed the new recording. I think it sounds better, for sure, and i think that's because of the advice and encouragement of people like you! Thanks, man. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Moviz said 44 days ago
I always
look forward to hearing your songs, since they always have as well as originality, a personal feel in the lyrics as well, that speaks from within. You certainly have your own sound vocally and instrumentally and I've noticed a great progression in your recordings/ mixes and performances, since I came here. This is a great sound and song and one of your best to date, Great stuff, M

I'm delighted as always to see you here! Thank you for such kind words about the song and the performance. I'm really glad you enjoyed this one. Much appreciated. Cheers, my friend. Peace.

Thanks for bringing this back. I don't know if I listened to the first but this is a great version. Everything sounds tight and realistic. So who did you hire? Just kidding. I cringe every time I hear "Hurricane" especially when it's heading for the gulf. I hunkered down through the lead. very enjoyable especially the build up.

John

dajama said 42 days ago
Thanks, John
Sorry if the hurricane motif brought on bad vibes! But happy you enjoyed the song. Glad you liked the performances; it was interesting to go back to something and try to replicate the good parts, but improve on the things that had bugged me about the original. Thanks for checking it out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

i hear you
excellent tune and the remix is great.

sometimes it takes us forever to get around to fixing older songs. I'm finally getting around to that myself.

dajama said 42 days ago

I'm glad you liked this. It really is hard to get time for going back, especially when there are so many other demands on every second of the day. I'm glad I went back to this, though; time permitting (yeah, right!) I'll go back and work on some others soon. thanks for checking it out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Thanks, man. I'm delighted it made an impact. Honestly, what else can we ask?! Glad you liked the buildup, too. Thanks again for stopping by and checking this one out. I always appreciate your feedback. Cheers. Peace.

Wow
Your vocals are always so honest. This is a really, really good song. The production is so crisp and present. I'm on your same learning curve so it's encouraging to hear where I can be in a few years.

dajama said 37 days ago
Thanks, man
And thanks especially for the nice words about the vocal - very flattering. I'm glad you like the sound, too. This was one I hoped would sound better for the do-over, and I'm happy to hear it doesn't sound too bad! Thanks for stopping by to check this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

New to me
hadn't heard this before so it was all new. I really like the "hoping for a hurricane but the sun keeps shining" concept, very cool idea. Mix sounds great, never easy to get a good acoustic guitar sound and this sounds really good. Bass is cool too - some nice changes, especially toward the end as the song builds, and I like the piano banging away underneath. But imo your vocals are what really sell the song - you have a rare 70's/80's folk rock quality that recalls Gordon Lightfoot and Jim Croce but also rockers like Bob Seger.

dajama said 37 days ago
Cheers, man
Thanks for checking this out, and many thanks for your kind comments. Glad you like the acoustic sound; I agree 100% - it can be a killer to get a good sound. One thing I made sure to do here was put new strings on the guitar - always helps! But thanks especially for the comment on the vocals - truly flattering. Talk about august company. I appreciate your encouraging words. Cheers, man. Much appreciated. Peace.

Who is Djama?
It's funny, I have this picture of you as a guy in his mid 20's, writing and posting his songs, who will at some stage break through and do this music thing for a living, because, well, your work is that good. This is a great version of your song, and shows how who've matured - your voice, playing, production, over the while that, well, I've been listening.

Keep making the noise, David, wonderful noise.

I really appreciate those words, man. Just as I appreciated your listening to this first time out and being so encouraging. I too sometimes think I'm in my mid-20s, and then I wake up! Glad you stopped by, and thanks again. I really appreciate it. Cheers. Peace.

This is late but...
This is a wonderful song! I've been away from MACJAM's for some time and just got back, and I can phantom how much great music are being posted here. This a very good song in all aspects: the vocals are generously held back to tell a story, and a great one that is. I love the lyrics "It's good to be a lier, because everything is true"... WOW!
The arrangement is also very good - from the first Hammond build-up, to acoustic and vocal - the verses, more build-up, and then; crescendo!!! The refrain is a killer, I've only listened to the song twice and it's already in my head.
The "crying" guitar solo is very, very, impressive! Def. d/l!

dajama said 25 days ago
Thanks
Thank you for stopping by and checking this one out. Your words are very kind and very encouraging. Glad you like that line - one of my favorites! I'm particularly you enjoyed the arrangement; that was something I thought worked well here. Once again, I appreciate your stopping by and checking this out. Much appreciated. Cheers. Peace.

Excellent song
and well worth the second go round. The production is very stately and patient - making room for everything and letting your voice and guitars shine through. Nice lead work.

SJB said 23 days ago
Nice one David
Hi David, i've had little time to listen at Macjams or record anything myself recently so this was a great welcome back! You have a great ability to let a song build up and get going. The playing, singing and production are seriously good! A very minor point, but maybe there's a bit of a sharp cut off to silence on the very last note should it decay for a bit longer?
who cares - it's still great!
