Description I got it all backwards this time around; usually I post tracks here before I release a record. This time, the record is already out - but I'm already thinking about what I can do to re-mix for next year. "Christmas Each Day" is my first Christmas recording and it was fun to create - began selecting tunes in August and recorded 16 tracks over the course of two weeks. Kind of a rush job, but I'm happy with the effort, for now. : )

For most of the album, I took these traditional tunes and went for a more orchestrated approach with the mountain dulcimer. Here's to hoping this music brings you listening pleasure and joy!

Feter, brother - thank you so much. I hope you are doing well and I appreciate your input on this tune. I'm glad the bass is reaching out - new monitors are long overdue here, so I had to sort of guess at the lower frequencies. Thanks again, man.

Joy!
Thanks, Rocha! Good to hear from you - it has been a busy season, on the road quite a bit. But things have slowed down and I'm looking forward to spending some time in the studio over the next couple of months. I'm also looking forward to the usual inspirational crop of holiday tunes that comes out of MJ - thanks again for the forum post, that was super-cool of you.

Dahling!
Hey Alannah - what are the odds that we might do something fun for Christmas? That would be a hoot - I can think of a few tunes that would be awesome with you. Looking forward to catching up with you here.

Ya Mon
Irie! I dig it mon. Very very nice. Great arrangement, and great sound on the dulcimer. Good luck with the Cd.

dreadmon said 46 days ago
Thanks!
Thanks, glad you liked it! Recording this album was difficult because I was switching back and forth between SM-58 and a condenser (ATM33a) for the dulcimer and was experimenting with the results. The Shure was awesome for close micing - the condenser was pretty good, but I would go back and do it differently, especially since I picked up a lot of city noise. Glad the dulcimer made the journey okay - it took some tweaking to ease the mid-range, which is a by-product of the dulcimer anyway. Thanks again!

Good to hear from you, Bing!
A classic tune with that classic Bing touch. I love the pealing bells effect. How many passes on the dulcimer did it take to get that? I like the backing orchestration, too. Something a bit different and nice. I'll start posting a few Advent tunes on Thanksgiving weekend. I always look forward to the holiday music season here at MacJams - it seems to bring out the best in people.

Seasons greetings
Hi, K.J.! Thanks for the kind words - there are two tracks of dulcimers for the most part. I switched off from playing melody sans drone to full-fledged drone, with a bit of a layering. The "bells" part is two dulcimers. Some of the other tracks I'll post from the album are three and four tracks of dulcimers, but most of it was kept very simple. In fact, this is one of the most produced tracks on the record - a lot of it is without percussion and bass - just dulcimer and, in some cases, acoustic guitar. I'm looking forward to hearing your tunes this year!

I love the mix you get...
...between bass and dulcimer, and I keep wondering if you've got a bass dulcimer goin' on...

Love the Mormon Tabernacle Dulcimer effect... and the chimes... and the general arrangement...

I wasn't sure I'd go for it coming off the synth intro, but go for it I did and do... Gotta send it to my sisters...

And hey, I saw one of your videos on YouTube, which I also enjoyed...

Good to hear you again, Bing...

Hiya, Ed - how goes it, man? Glad you got past the synth part - I had some doubts about it, but decided that it eventually worked. Just got back from a festival where Bob and Rose Taunton had some MEAN bass dulcimers. This bass is actually a software instrument put through the GB bass amp and some compression. Still not the big sound I was looking for, but didn't want to scare the dulcimer crowd with anything too thrummy. Thanks for listening!

michael2 said 46 days ago
i
bought a dulcimer at a flea market one time and I had a hard enough time putting new strings on it that I never even got to play the thing (what a piece of garbage - i sometimes bang on it with mallets and use it as a drum).

anyways I digress: this is really fabulous, i'm impressed. you really have a great ear and a nice touch. this will definitely be on my xmas play list.

dreadmon said 44 days ago
Thanks
Hey thanks! And, I've heard things like what happened to you happen to other people, it sort of puts them off the instrument, or makes them think that it's them and not the instrument. But it sure sounds like you got a bum deal. A dulcimer, proper one anyways, will make it easy for you to let the music spill out. I hope you haven't given up on it -and perhaps will give another try. Peace and aloha!

Beautifully played and arranged Bing.

What a light touch you have on that dulcimer.

Happy Christmas :-)

mountain dulcimer!
Had a wonderful time listening to this. Especially like the combination of instruments - and the fact that all string instruments sound 'real' - blending very well with the soft percussion and synths. One of the nicest 'modern' interpretations I've heard. Charming!

dreadmon said 44 days ago
Cool!
This is such a wonderful comment - I really do appreciate it. Thanks for listening!

thetiler said 44 days ago
Nice
enjoyed how it started out and how it continues, like the way the whole thing comes across.

This is my fav of yours.
Love the thump, deadening of the strings, really accentuates the music with lots of cool rhythms. Great use of the synth as well.
A real christmas highlight here at MJ !

Well done with lots of pop originality!

Way To Go

Thanks for sharing!

Wow!
Thank you so much, Bill. Wow - I'm a big fan of your finger-style, so you really bowl me over with this comment. Glad you enjoyed the muting and arrangement, that really means a lot!

Lennon714 said 44 days ago
It is always
a treat when you post something. You always do magnificent work with traditional tunes. You preserve the integrity of what makes them so memorable in the first place, but are still able to put loads of your own flavor.

dreadmon said 44 days ago
Thank you
Thanks for the insight there - I really like to straddle the line between traditional and progressive music. You honor me with your words, thank you for taking the time to listen. Mahalo.

Gorgeous
Man, that got me in the holiday mood in two seconds flat! Such beautiful playing; such a delicate touch. A toast of hot chocolate by the fire with snow flakes falling, children calling, and a room lit by the light of a Christmas tree.

dreadmon said 44 days ago
That is awesome!
Oh, such beautiful imagery! I'm lovin' that, Joanna - and thanks for listening. I've been living with this music since August, and you'd think I'd be sick of it by now - but I'm even more pumped up about the music of the season at this point. Thanks for the lift. : )

VicDiesel said 44 days ago
Happy sound
It's still a bit early, but some good cheer is never unwelcome. The light sound of your strings fits this song very nicely. Good sounding mix, and a cool arrangement will those little touches like the strings later on.

One remark: I'm not that happy about the bass. It's a bit very static, just holding long notes until the next chord change.

dreadmon said 42 days ago
Mahalo!
Thanks for listening, Vic! "Early" was working on this tune in the summer, practicing it in places of transit (read: airport concourses) where people looked at me like I was insane.) But now that it's post-Thanksgiving, we're officially in the clear, right? : )Given more time, I might've done something different with the bass, but I actually was going for pedal tones. What bugs me about the bass is its lack of THRUM, which, had I gotten, would probably have more than compensated for its relative static nature. That's definitely one for the remix next year.
