Description This is another Celebrity Torture song.

Graeme Hobbs wrote the lyrics and the melody but when we recorded it I used a uke that was not in concert and I couldn't use the track :-(

Anyway this is my version. It's a bit of a rough mix at the moment but I'm sure you guys will point me in the right direction

The vocal and guitar were a one mic one take job as I simply couldn't do them separately for some reason and it's led to a noisy take.

Ever since I first heard one of Paul's piano pieces I've wanted to find something of mine he could play on and finally I think I've found it but I feel a little bad about this as I asked him to dumb down his playing and go against all his training to play a very sparse part and not be too precise. He also had to deal with my liberal interpretation of rubato. So apologies to Paul for dragging him down to my level and many thanks :)

Rebsie sings backing vocals and despite going down with a bad cold she did an excellent job.

Many thanks to Paul and Rebsie for this

Dimwitted © Graeme Hobbs 2008

You like to think your s*** don't stink
But I'm here to tell you different
You're living in another world
Populated by self importance

You like to think this is forever
Like to think you'll be remembered
Just passing through, this world
Gone and soon to be forgotten

Your skin and bone and nicotine
A home from home for legend making
Your catatonic state, you've found your true soul mate
Maybe it's not too late to end a loser
Rushed into casualty, a near fatality
To remind you of your mortality

I'm dimwitted and you're dimwitted and
we're all dimwitted if we think you're important

You look a mess, must be the stress
Must be all that easy living
Be leaving here, very soon
Working on your self destruction

Did you think this was forever
Do you really think you'll be remembered?
Just passing through, this world
Gone and soon to be forgotten

Were you really blessed, were we so obsessed?
You're hounded by the press, your life's just one big mess

You're not invincible, or irreplaceable
If the truth be told, you're just disposable
You're heading for the slab, your title's there to grab
Tabloid pages in a body bag

I'm dimwitted and you're dimwitted and
we're all dimwitted if we think you're important

Cheers

Wonderful song
Firstly, an extremely well written and well crafted song with exceptional lyrics.
I think your vocal performance on this Dick is superb - sung with such feeling. Pauls piano and Rebsies vocal fit perfectly too. Although the mix is a 'bit rough' I think it actually gives the song a 'live' feel which makes it seem very intimate to the listener. Really enjoyed this and downloaded. Thanks.
Cheers
Len

DWL said 47 days ago
Rough it was .......
The vocals and guitar were done in one take with one mic so it was very much "live". I'm pleased it's given a little edge to it.

Thanks for the comments Len. Much appreciated.

Cheers

lyrics-
are sad, but great. You have a really great group of performers here. I agree with Len about the roughness of the mix making it feel live. Excellent.

DWL said 47 days ago
Thanks Kristyjo
In this case I am just a conduit as I didn't write the song or play piano or sing harmonies. I'm pleased you enjoyed it though :-)

Soundtrack for Extras
This is awesome, I love the feeling. You must know you sound a bit like Bowie in that croon, adore it. This would go so perfectly with a Ricky Gervais skit, so much so you all must find him and make sure he knows it exists. Downloaded!

DWL said 46 days ago
Extras?
Yeah, that would be cool :-)

Pity I don't know anyone who knows Mr Gervais!

Thanks for the listen and the comments.

Very cool...
Great vocals Dick.. and your supporting cast is second to none. I see you have a Yairi too?

DWL said 46 days ago
The Yairi
must be over 30 years old now. My favourite guitar without a doubt :-)

Thanks for the generous comments

I'm just arranging now which is good. I've still not written anything new for quite some time.

I'm pleased you stopped by Jack. Thanks

is the writer's block easing ?? sounds like the ice is breaking.

Peter Bauckham said 47 days ago
I have to agree
with Len regarding the mix - but I do think it would sound a lot better with a higher bit rate - I don't mind the hiss but the MP3 artifacts are a bit too obvious. However, it's a great song with excellent performances from everyone. Downloaded - but look forward to a 'tarted up' version someday!

Tarted up?
The story of my life...

I get frustrated that I can't post updated versions here as I've now taken some of the reverb off the voice and tried to make it more natural.

Never mind!

Thanks for the comments Pete and I'm sorry you can't make Thursday. Next year perhaps?

Cheers

i like
nothing dimwitted about this song. this is great.

has a live sound like Len mentioned.
I really lived your vocal on this Dick, real nice. and a great back up group.
to bad about the uke. that would of been interesting.

DWL said 45 days ago
So you want the uke version?
OK Vic, here's the original with Graeme singing and me on uke that is not quite in concert so I couldn't get the strings to work at all.

Very nice song Dick.
Kudos to you, Pail, and Rebsie for an excellent job. As you say, the vox/guitar is a little noisy, but only just. It giuves this a natural character, like you're listening to a live performance. I guess in a way we are, aren't we.

Great hob on the lyrics and you vocal doing them. Pass the compliment on the lyrics along to Graeme for my will you mate.

Thanks for this, it wonderful.

Ed

DWL said 45 days ago
Graeme says thanks!
And so do I.

I think it's one of Graeme's better songs and it was a real pleasure working on this especially with such a great band!

Thanks for stoppiong by Ed.

no matter
the technology, great songwriting shows through. This is fabulous. Kudo's to all. I hope you take it in the highest regards intended, but I hear shades of david gilmour here. Outstanding

Quite simply
A fantastic bit of songwriting

Really love the lyric, and the one take vocal/guitar is great - I would never have guessed unless you'd said -

A genuine "Favourite"

Oh, I am so bad at replying some times
so many apologies.

Yes, one take but that was the only way I could do it! Graeme excelled himself with these lyrics so I really appreciate the comments.

Love the performance Dick
Great playing/singing etc all round. Your voice is sounding in top form Dick, and Paul's understated piano works perfectly. Having Rebsie doing BGV is always going to be a positive addition.

Any criticisms are regarding the production from the single mic approach on vocals and guitar, but you are probably already aware of them.

This is a really good song btw - lyrics and melody remind me of someone but I can't place them.

Good stuff!
Neil

DWL said 37 days ago
Thanks Neil
Trying to get up to date with replies!

It was weird but I couldn't do the vocal and guitar parts separately. I kept losing time. No idea why....

I'm pleased you enjoyed the track though. One of Graeme's best I think.

Cheers

Excellent song
and great songwriting.

Your vocals on this are superb Dick, really great stuff!

I also agree with Len, has a great live feel to this song.

Very much enjoyed, thanks!

Hum! where am I? have I put my radio on.. Excellent song simply beautiful.. TX

VicDiesel said 46 days ago
Sparse
That guest piano part sometimes peeps around the corner of the vocals, and then it disappears for a while again. I would probably find a couple of spots where the piano part is particularly well executed, and then push it forward in the mix for a whole verse. Also gives a bit of variety to the arrangement.

Moviz said 44 days ago
May be
what you call a 'rough mix', but there's a lot of heart coming through both in the performance and the lyrics. Great song and vocals are great, cheers M

Epileptic Gibbon said 41 days ago
I'm not sure why
but there's something of Pink Floyd about this... perhaps it could find a place on 'The Wall', because there's something a bit Roger Waters about both the lyrics and your vocals. And don't be so tough on yourself Dick because you may not have written this but the vocals and the overall piece sound great. Fab contributions all around.

Rebsie said 41 days ago
Very proud of you Dick
It's been a privilege for me to see this track come together and I still think your first demo was spine-tingling ... but there's no doubt you nailed it with this version. A beautiful moving live performance, and I think you got the mix spot on.

It's an incredibly powerful song. The lyrics are amazing even by Graeme's standards and it benefits from Paul's piano enrichment.

Thank you Dick, you've done us all proud. :)

This just
popped into my ears again via iTunes on shuffle. It really is a fantastic track. I will enjoy listening to it many more times. Thanks.

Really
the mix sounds pretty fine to me. The roughness does give it more character and really it is a very mildly rough mix at that. Vocals and lyrics are great, yes somewhat depressing, but good stuff. I really enjoyed listening to this tune call me dimwitted. Thanks =)

lavalamp said 30 days ago
Showtune?
This is just a great, well-written tune. "Showtune", sort of made me shy to listen. Rebsie is sounding like Dido on the backgrounds. Dick, very nice vox.
