Keywords Native American (20)Flute (121)World (99)Dance (536)Joy (36)happy (107)
Description This is played by Native American Flute, but in a style that's more influenced by... well, I don't know, exactly, but it's much more of a rustic dance-type tune than anything else. This is myself playing my Butch Hall- key of A flute three times through. First with a melody line, then with an ostinato, then with a harmony line. I'm using a fairly 'fat' sounding EQ on this - it is a bit like playing flute in either a barn, or a tile-lined bathroom. But I like it, so there. I have added album art, for all you visual-stim junkies out there. It is "Harvest Dance' by Thomas Vigil. Oh - for the folks who may be into the voting thing that we discussed on the forums: I'd give this an 8 on songwriting, a 7 on production, an 8 on originality, and an all around tally of 8. Listen, comment, vote if you'd like to.

Visual-stim junkie speaking...
I really like this, and like it more as it builds...Really fills the headphones...Well composed, well played, well recorded...

I'm putting a vote in, in 'voting verite' mode... From the days when 8's were great scores...

It's a nice, and promised, change up from the more melancholy flute pieces, which I also like...

kristyjo said 48 days ago
Ah- the old days
When '8' meant '8'. Thanks for listening and nudging me to add that album art!

interesting, what's ostinato? nice sounding flute and completely different then your previous NAF song, which I enjoyed..........BlueSky

Ostinato
Hadn't got a clue, so, having a Mac, I looked it up in the built-in dictionary, which says: "a continually repeated musical phrase or rhythm". I guess Wikipedia or whatever would give a similar result ;-)

Oh, and a nice song it is, ostinato and all! Possibly a wee bit too much reverb for my ears, though, if I were to offer some little crit...

Ostinato
Ostinato is a repeating pattern. Actually, the 'ostinato' I'm referring to actually should be called a pedalpoint, because it's the same note, but the rhythm differs. Of course, a pedalpoint is usually played by the organ, so then you don't need any breaks for breathing. Anyway - I played this in three passes. I'm still not sure about the EQ on this, but it's getting closer to what I want. At this point, I think it's a matter of what mood I'm in, and how far away I play from the microphone. Thanks for listening.

This is...
...just a joyous little song, Kristyjo...Its open 4ths and 5ths are reminiscent of pre-renaissance organum and the hollow effect is just wonderful and natural. Also, as Ed mentions, the sound "fills the headphones" and has much more of an ambient quality than previous recordings of your various flutes. That extra bit of reverb really makes a difference in a very good way... I also like the dissonance created when voices peel off from one another by semi or whole tones, creating for just a moment an "unsettledness" that somehow keeps the whole piece balancing between finality and a desire to keep moving ahead. ... My 2-cents though: write a "B" section and take the melody somewhere else for a little stroll before recapitulating. What about (hey! Here's an idea!) playing the original tune backwards, descending movement for 8 to 12 or 16 bars...????
THIS is a beautiful number; your playing is wonderful.
Peace.

Paul -
Thanks for listening. You share some interesting ideas, there. I'm now into arranging music for the holidays (shoulda been done a month ago, but...) so I may revisit this piece with your thoughts in hand during the February blues season - cheer myself up!

Sweet playing, Kristy
and the EQ sounds rich and great to my ears. I love how you've woven this. :-)

All right, one vote for full, rich EQ. Thanks for letting me know on that. I just had a picture flash through my head of a bunch of MacJammers dancing and moving to this piece - kind of like the album art. Hmm. Must be time for me to be getting to sleep.
Thanks for your listen, and your always gracious comments.

flutes
You are getting such lovely, warm sounds out of that flute. I love the 3 different tracks of this, moving in and out of each other. Very cool ostinato line. Certainly has a dance feel, upbeat and hopeful to my ear. Very Fall-ish, going into Winter. Very nice.

Thanks for listening
And for your feedback on the flute sounds. The 'warm' sound of a flute is a welcome diversion on a chilly evening.

Catchy
Hey,

I was humming this melody all morning and couldn't remember where I had heard it! Now I come back to this and here it is: Great stuff!

Thanks
Bill

Aha-
I've finally composed an ear-worm. That's what a friend calls melodies that 'worm' their way into your brain and get stuck there. Thanks for letting me know about this milestone in my MacJams career. I'm glad you enjoyed the song.

I love those native flutes
It was funny as I was listening to this, the first round seem kind of cheerful to me, then after the bridge it gets kind of melancholy, I'm not sure what you did differently (or if) or if the bridge just framed it in a different setting for me, but that was pretty cool.
Good tune, thanks for posting it.

Interesting...Interesting
I really don't have any new material in the last go around of the A section (It's in Rondo form, by the way ABACA - a Western convention, not a Native American one), but after reading your comments, I listened, and you're right, the different set-up does give it a slightly bittersweet feeling. Wow.

I enjoyed the harmonies of this simple but beautiful piece KJ!

I have a hard time voting on something like this. The sheer simplicity speaks so sweetly to me that I just lose myself. I'll just say that I love this stuff.

kristyjo said 43 days ago
Thanks.
Thanks, Bob. I didn't mean to pressure anyone into voting, but there was a forum about voting a couple of weeks ago, so I wanted to let everyone know that I didn't expect 10s on this. I always am so glad to get comments, though, so thank you for listening and sharing your comments!

Harmony
You're right, this is unusual for native flutes in a number of ways. Playing three-fold harmony is definitely one. The instrument has such a limited range that you have to be pretty creative to add a plausible harmony. Of course, if you play all parts yourself that's much easier to do...

Very nice.

kristyjo said 40 days ago
Vic-
Yeah, although I've done a couple of pieces with a drone flute sound (again, just me playing in two passes - I can't actually afford to purchase a drone flute right now.) The three parts is really more like a northern European harmony thing. It actually reminds me a little of Orff. It's all an improv that was memorable enough to remember and practice. Thanks for listening!!!

Amazing
tone you are getting here. You have an incredible feel for this kind of music!

kristyjo said 39 days ago
Thank you for listening -
I've been working on this kind of flute for about a year, now, and I have 3 different kinds of flute. I can see how a person can get addicted to collecting this kind of instrument, and I also love playing it. Thanks for listening and for your kind comments.
