Description I wrote and recorded a simpler version of this a while ago with just piano, bass, mellotron, slide guitar, drums and a rough vocal, but thought it was missing something - especially during the chorus. Michael and I had discussed doing another collab so I thought I'd send him this and see if he was interested in adding something. In no time he sent back these extremely cool and well-suited rhythm guitar tracks you hear. They totally complete the song and give the chorus exact tongue-in-cheek saracastic/happy attitude I was looking for. Next I wrote lyrics and re-recorded the lead vocals, then sent it back to him again to add some background vocals. Again he quickly delivered some perfect additions.
Regarding the lyrics, I thought the subject matter was interesting - it's basically about living with someone who is depressed and how you 'need' (maybe more than just 'want') them to be happy just so you can be happy too. It's a rather selfish but human sentiment often disguised as empathy. In this case it's encouraging someone who is sad to put it aside and at least pretend to be happy. Not a good idea, and not very helpful.
This is either the catchiest or maybe most annoying chorus I've ever written. Or maybe both. Just try to get it out of your head.
Lyrics Well I don't know if it's the season
But I'm feeling cold and distant from your love
And you're not giving me a reason
To think differently of this situation
You can't avoid this anymore
Your darkness needs an open door
So let it go or let it out
I need you to be happy
Like this:

Do do doo do doo da doo doo....

Well I have thought about leaving this
But I thought better and stayed to play it out
You're not giving me a purpose
You're not giving me a way to stick around
I can't avoid your endless pain
Your darkness covers me again
Can't let you go I can't get out
So I need you to be happy
Like this:

Do do doo do doo da doo doo....

You can't avoid this anymore
Your darkness needs an open door
So let it go or let it out
I need you to be happy

Do do doo do doo da doo doo.... etc

hmm
I don't find the chorus annoying. So it's certainly not your most annoying. Which one of you two wrote the chorus to "Nobody Knows"? That's probably the catchiest song I've ever heard.

Are you sure you're not the Canadian Damon Albarn? No criticisms here.

rsorensen said 52 days ago
thanks
good to know it's not annoying you. i wrote the nobody knows chorus, but later found out i unintentionally lifted the melody from a kids' cartoon! i hate that. i'm sure this melody's lifted too. aren't they all?
haha yeah i totally hear damon albarn too. In the first verse especially. weird eh? don't mind the comparison though. thanks again eric

If only
everyone could be happy like Do do doo do doo da doo doo. I don't know about the rest of the world but it sure works for me. The lyrics stuck in the head is a great way to block out the outside unhappy. Thanks, always enjoy a download from your site

rsorensen said 46 days ago

glad this works for you! thanks sheila

michael2 said 52 days ago
awesome
it's so sad, and yet so happy. it's like the banana splits jamming with the beatles and the stones; then suddenly they transform into something i've never heard before. i'd love to see this band live, opening for the flaming lips. it all sounds great, you did a good job mixing: i know because i heard my vox before i sent them to you. love this song. see ya next time.

rsorensen said 46 days ago

thanks for your additions michael. they really complete this song. don't sell yourself short on the bg vox either. i didnt do anything to em. and yeah, see ya next time

Nice job
I like the dynamics of this song - well mixed as well. You have a good voice for this work. For some reason it made me think of the Police at least twice - lord knows why... Perhaps the doodadoododooo thing ;-)

rsorensen said 46 days ago

thanks. interesting you're hearing the police in this. not that I mind! thanks for listening

you're welcome! thanks for downloading

Love it
This is a great song. I think the chorus works very well, and fits the vibe of the lyrics perfectly. Great thick percussion and bass sound, and I love the lyrics - a great expression of the tension between wanting to be happy and wanting someone else to be happy so you can be happy! Elegantly done. And with some lovely line ("You're not giving me a way to stick around" - excellent) Great song, great collab. Do more! Nicely done, gents. Peace.

rsorensen said 46 days ago

yeah it's an interesting subject to think about, no doubt. thanks for stopping by

happy happy...
...joy joy! nice big mix. strings are very stereo when the kick in.

really dig the piano part. the rthm gtrs, ala m2, are perfect - like you said. dig the guitar solo (and the tone you achieved). also digging the layered bgs and fanfare near the end. you two are a pair of geniuses! like ren & stimpy!

rsorensen said 46 days ago

thanks man. ren and stimpy huh? i'll take it!

kassia said 52 days ago

Very catchy, not in a bad way. Love the lyrics. and man I love it when you two collaborate. Awesome background vocals michael. The tune is great, well constructed. I love the simple accompaniment on the verses. Cool guitar sounds. Another great song!

Relic67 said 52 days ago

good song!
I actually like the bass part most of all.
background vocals and guitar parts great too.
little bit of hey jude at the end?
really great ending actually.
you 2 work together really really well. more please!

rsorensen said 46 days ago

yeah the bass is actually the 'stand up' bass plugin on my keyboard. first time i did the bass without a guitar. i was impressed with the sound of it that i just said what the heck and left the bass in the case. glad you like this, thanks

Skean said 52 days ago
Yes guys
You 2 are so awesome... Nice collab..Kudos.

rsorensen said 46 days ago

thanks skean!

lavalamp said 51 days ago
Hats off
We need more songs with "Doo doo doo" and "Dee dee dee". No jokes, this quite an amazing piece. Again, I'd buy your stuff.
Great job, gentlemen.

tempie said 51 days ago
great concept!
great, intuitive conept, lyrically and from a composition standpoint. Really like the "just be happy like this" do do do chorus. Like the lead too - has that George Harrison feel.

tempie said 51 days ago
sorry to double post
but just listened with phones and man i like what you did with the chorus - the guitar lead and the vocals bouncing back and forth - also the woo-wooo. very cool!

rsorensen said 46 days ago

glad you enjoyed this. michael really colored the choruses and verse with his guitars but left room for them to really work with the vocal melodies.

that80sboy said 51 days ago

Man - you two guys are some supergroup
makes it hard for a thrasher like me to post his humble bunglings. Excellent writing - performing - producing. Excellent bass pinning this down.

Good job guys
This is radio friendly yet original, sweet grooves and that piano is a trademark on this song

rsorensen said 46 days ago

thanks. yeah i agree the piano def stand out. i added a heavy vinyl effect to it so it would

Vic Holman said 51 days ago
I'm happy
excellent job guys. cool tune. you both attacked this perfectly.

really has the sound that twisted my little brain when i first understood music back in jr. high. so that makes me happy all over.

rsorensen said 46 days ago

rsorensen said 46 days ago

thanks i'll consider that if I revisit this mix. thanks for listening

Diviner said 45 days ago
Agree with the Damon Albarn comment
esp reminds me of something from , which is cool. I thought it was a nice track and only another example to show that I cannot make music to this standard. Cool track.

Scott Carmichael said 45 days ago
very glad
too be visiting your page... your music has that intangible quality, that seperates you from the herd...

so watch out for preditors...

ooops I derailed...

I love the conversational quality in the delivery... the production is as good as anything I've heard here... you make great choices

great stuff... Scott
