Description I’m a bit self-conscious about posting this, as it’s the 3rd time I’ll have done so. I’ve made changes, though and am doing this...

1)...to show just how much of a difference can be made when someone who’s got some serious mixing/mastering knowledge gets his or her hands on a song.

2)...to have the version I’m happiest with posted here.

It’s one thing to mix guitar parts (one or more). I’ve gotten pretty good at that. But it’s totally another thing when you add a voice (or any instrument that differs from the timbre of the guitar).

After listening to the first two versions of this tune, I realized that I wasn’t satisfied with the vocal. So I sang it again and came up with another take that I liked better. But I still couldn’t get the mix right. In fact...I didn’t really like the mix on any of my tunes with vocals.

So...I brought the tune(s) to a pro. He put ‘em on Pro-Tools and did some great stuff. This one’s a keeper (as are all the tunes I brought to Dave), which will be on my cd. I’ll be keeping one of the other posts up for a bit, in case anyone’s got the interest/time to make a comparison. For you engineers out thar.

Whatever’s done...I’m just happy you dropped by. Thanks.

Here’s the description of the tune from my first posting.

Inspiration is the finest of cloth.

Back in April, 2007, I put out a post, asking what program to get as a beginner in the recording realm. Got plenty of fine advice. The last response (I almost missed it) was from this guy, Taylor Morgan, who told me he just so happened to have a spare iLife disc with GB2 on it. Just send him my address and he'd mail it to me. No charge. Free.

This, in my world, does not happen every day. Especially from a "stranger". I was extremely touched by his generosity and promised him a song in return.

Interestingly enough: after I'd installed the disc, I was given another copy by my job, here in NYC. I ended up giving Taylor's to my friend in France. Funny how things work that way...

Well...this one's for you, Taylor. Wherever and whenever you may be. Thanks so much. And to all my friends here at Macjams. To the spirit of music, sharing, and giving. A little holiday season gift to all of you. (I like it with headphones, btw).

Lyrics Tailor Made
Music and lyrics by Bob Prince
© 2007

I've got a secret
I don't plan to keep.
I've hidden it
inside this song.

It ain't meant for laughter
or makin' folks weep.
If you follow,
I'll help you along.

Not too loose
or too tight.
Tailor made.
Fits just right.

Time for a clue
'cuz you passed it
you see:
some tunes I write
don't come from me.

(instrumental)

Not to loose
or too tight.
Taylor made.
Fits just right.

I've got a secret
that I just can't keep.
So I've hidden it
inside this song.

Hardware Fernandez Classical Guitar
Rode NT3 condenser mic

Software: GB2 for tracks
Pro-Tools for mixing
Don't know what he used for mastering...but I like it

clean and sharp
Bob, this sounds so much nicer and cleaner in this re-mix.

I wonder how it would sound with sewing thimbles on your fingers, totally kidding.

I think...
....I remember an earlier version, Bob. THIS ONE is...fabo! Your guitar pickin' is superb and the general feeling of the song absolutely satisfying. Bravo! ... Yes. The ProTools environment is pretty remarkable and, in the hands of someone who really knows how to use it, can help produce some very clean stuff. But, of course, the composition and the performance have to be THERE before anything else goes on, and you've got THAT down pat. Wonderful tune. Looking forward to your CD.
Peace.

Great playing
so clear and concise. Just a hint of green selves and the word smithing is fun as well. Will there be a post to the answer of the riddle? i get the middle path part but he sang so many songs it's hard to know which to choose form.

Good show amigo........

oh, and...
Someone told me, I think it was Ik, that if you play a song on various types of audio delivery and it all sounds good, you know you have a great mix. I think that's the case here, too...

I've always liked this song, and I'm glad you posted this version. It sounds great. Lovely performance, and great sound. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, a nice backstory! Check. Kudos, my friend. Peace.

I listened to the first version Bob
and as I recalled i liked it. I like this one even more. And your guitar sounds perfectly in tune. Not flat, or sharp, but Just Right

Great new mix Bob and well worth the extra effort. Thanks for the new vocal and mix, it great ER than before.

Be well and be cool

I loved this the first time....
This is even better. You've come such a long way as far as recording your sound; so clean, and feels like you are in the room here at home. Great job, Bob...Have a great holiday with your family ;-)

Thanks, Joe. I'm so busy, nowadays, that it's hard to keep up with everything. So, thanks to everyone who's taken the time to give this a listen. Means the world to me.

I remember the earlier nersions
of this song and thought they were wonderful - but you're right about this being a keeper. Great vocal performance and excellent production. Once again - the lyrics are beautiful and fit your playing like a glove. Something European about this - reminds me a bit of Georges Moustaki (whom I must say I haven't heard in at least twenty years so I could be way of base - but they are fond memories).

You
are getting an amazing sound here, and I love the chord progression.I think you added a bunch of stuff to the original? Anyway this is absolutely great!

I changed the vocal...recorded it over again. Nothing else is different except the mix and mastering. I really like what he did, there.

Thanks, Mark...

Roxylee said 46 days ago
a perfect mix
Not that I know anything about mixing, but this sure sounds great. I love the vocals and delivery, the chord progression (reminds me of France, where you sent the iLife disc) and your playing is exquisite!

Very clean and smooth. This is my first time hearing this piece, its wonderful. I hear a story behind the music that is a little bit sad. The art fits the song perfect.

Awesome!

HdPhs is the only way to listen...
Is it live or is it a well produced Bob Prince! Clearly, and very clearly, it is the latter. I couldn't imagine being or feeling more vulnerable than to have my voice or, my anything made to be so, crystal clear. To have such clarity in the sharing of the instrument that sings a man's words has to be both, a bit scary but in a case like yours, it must also be quite gratifying too, given how extremely well this turned out. Here you have both of your singing voices being beautifully displayed. And it's such a warm piece to, Bob! It's truly special. The level of intimacy on this really came through, too. It's like you're right here and, right now. To even be in the appropriate head space to perform this might not be an easy task, as well, I would imagine.

Definitely a nice treat! Thanks for sharing this, Sir.

Thanks, macca. It's always nice to hear from you. Hope you're well over thar.

I'm especially happy that you'd like my voice. It's been a cause of concern for me since I was 17. I've just started to get more confident with it since joining this community.
