Description WildlifeAnalysis posted Invention #16 a short while back, part of a series exploring song construction based around the rhythm section.

I remember both Drew and I commenting on what an incredible tune, (and jumping up and down) at how much we'd like to play along.

Wombat was cool with trading files and when I finished up some tracks almost posted it, but decided to ping Andrew instead. Flip me out, he just finished a track on his end. So he mixed this with what I had done. Truly freakin me out.

Wombat (Wildlifeanalysis) - Mandolin, Guitars, Drums

Drew Kopr - Bass, Mix/Production

ktb - Keys

Yippee!
What a cool grooving, sweet melodic track! Just like KTB said, I had just finished laying down a bass track to Invention 16, when KTB sends me this killing keyboard track over the main groove, which you can find here http://www.macjams.com/song/47468. So we exchange a few files and bam! Invention 16 1/2!

Karmatoburn said 54 days ago
your mix
is outstanding. I tried to bracket everything but came no where near grabbin the pocket like you did here. Love the bass drivin throughout.

WildlifeAnalysis said 55 days ago
Wow!
Ah man... This is a whole new organism! Thanks to both of yall for the killer grooves. The Keys and the funky new bass line seal it for me. Let's do this again! Very cool!

Karmatoburn said 54 days ago
more
experiments in rythmic possibilities please. Your mandolin playin sealed it for me. Thanks for sharing. Hope we can do another

mackellar said 54 days ago
Great!
I am going to the beach today and this song is just perfect for the long drive there. Thanks. :-)

Karmatoburn said 54 days ago
drivin
a perfect place for this would be a drive to the beach :-) btw, got your midi file and will keep you posted. Thanks

lengold said 54 days ago
Fantastic
groove and some very impressive playing and production. Great listen.
Cheers
Len

Karmatoburn said 54 days ago
we all
fell in i think. Maybe if we had tried to coordinate we wouldn't have done as well :-) always great to get your ear Len. Thanks for the comment

Mcboy said 54 days ago
groovin track
that fretless sounds nice and beefy....nice work on the keys and strings.....kool!

Drew Kopr said 54 days ago
fretless
Hey bro! Tx for checking out the tune. I wish that bass was a fretless...that's actually my Precision bass with a jazz pick up by Lindy Fralin that I installed. Adding enough reverb gets that fretless like sound. I need to buy a fretless because it is just the sound for a tune like this one.

Karmatoburn said 54 days ago
hey man
hope all is goin well. 'preciate the good words.

said 54 days ago
very good
production, impressive bass-also the keys!

Karmatoburn said 54 days ago
really
pleased you dig this. I'm a fan of your stuff.

your bio story is also a great read :-)

tokai said 54 days ago
Sir Jon
you do like to make these up beat tracks that free flow with musical happiness and good vibes. This, another example of your gifts of creativity on those keys. Sweet sounding tune that is just what i need to hear after a few hard days in the saddle.

Karmatoburn said 54 days ago
aaahh
in this case all "beat" props go to WildlifeAnalysis. Its his Mandolin and drum programming that sucked me in. Glad to hear you survived the get together, hope you took pictures (both kinds) :-)

Ejh said 54 days ago
Wow, this really brightens my mood, just that easy...
Great propulsion...Lovely fast bass that is in the pocket and never busy...Nicely draped with melodic keyboards, and not pads... Everything in motion, but nothing in each other's way...

This is really cool...

Ed

Karmatoburn said 54 days ago
propulsion
how apt. kinetic motion I did manage to sneak a few synth pads in there tho :-) but you hit on something that flipped me out when I first heard it. Drew just put our two tracks together and they gelled right away. Even down to this middle section where we both felt the need to drop out and let the rhythm take over. Very Rod Serling to me. I do love it when that happens thx for takin a listen Ed

Feter said 54 days ago
Invention #16
WOW ...now this is a terrific colab ...alive and very
floatin hi ..I love it ...the mandolin touch just a
thrill there ..the bass and the keys just right them
a song came from the days of inventin an jammin the night
long ...kudos ...topnotch production ...thnx alot for
sharin !!!!

Karmatoburn said 53 days ago
mandolin
Grateful for the kind words Mr Feter. I agree the Mandolin shines in this.

regulus said 54 days ago
Great work
here. Very up tempo and good feeling. Something for all the factory workers in the world to plug into. This must have been mostly done on keyboard as I didn't pick up on loops excepting with the drums and percussion.

Nice piece, kind of a Vangalis of today. Now, where did I park my chariot?

Karmatoburn said 53 days ago
background
I too think it has a kind of soundtrack quality to it. Something with motion perhaps. There are 3 keys tracks, a piano, low synth pad and a string patch that echoes the piano. Wildlife did the horns, as well as the phenomenal Mandolin and drum tracks. Drew Kopr added bass and was responsible for making it work together like we planned it ;-)

peacepiano said 54 days ago
Sit down and Listen
This one demands that you listen! A lot going on. Really tight groove from all three. Crazy to think the bass and keys were developed separately at first. Hats Off for some very fine jamming!

Thanks
Bill

Karmatoburn said 53 days ago
lots hapn'
Bill, always a pleasure to see your comments. I'm on my kazzillionth listen and I'm still pickin up new sonic goodies.

Wow
Pretty crazy stuff. Really tight groove - nice playing - as Ed says, it has propulsion. Would make a fine soundtrack to a "moving traffic at night" kind of art film (normally scored by Philip Glass).

Enjoyed -
Phil

Karmatoburn said 53 days ago
definitely
a drivin (or something in motion) soundtrack. Phil always a delight to see your comments.

tempie said 53 days ago
hot for invention
intro had me expecting hot for teacher lol ... seriously this is one of my favorite ktb postings...such a cohesive sound, hard to believe you all put it together the way that you did. really love the way the mandolin threads everything together (and the way the mandolin is mixed...how it comes up and goes down in the mix - very cool)...great bass and as always very cool keys.

Karmatoburn said 53 days ago
the mix
Mr. Drew Kopr is the magician on this one. He's managed to make me think we're all in the same room feelin this common drive. Craig, thanks for leavin an encouraging comment, mean a lot to me.

Karmatoburn said 53 days ago
dat organ
Tim, glad you like the organ. Only part I was a little unsure on. I'm still a lil freaked as to how this developed (just sort of hapn'd) in one day. Drew and I both finishing tracks independently and then he melds them together like he did. I truly love this place.

timothy devine said 48 days ago
KTB
That is so cool hoe the tune developed, and i concur this is a very hip place.
peace

synergy
synergy is going on strong here. tight, and if this was playing in my car, i know i would more then likely get a speeding ticket.

excellnet work guys!

Karmatoburn said 52 days ago
my first
speeding ticket I was listening to the Marshall Tucker Band and Roy Caldwell was opening some blackhole at about 160 bpm. Then I really got in trouble when I keep the jam playin the whole time he was talking to me...

different days..sigh

anyhoo thanks Vic for checking it out

guitapick said 53 days ago

6th sense
or luck in our case :-) Thanks for the listen and the positive words

estellie said 51 days ago
I can tell you guys LOVE making music!
And the song itself sounds happy to exist. Like it is happy to be so musical. It's hard to explain, but I hope you get what I mean.

Karmatoburn said 50 days ago
Hey!
I get exactly what you mean :-) couldn't agree more. I hope you had a great wedding...love your new picture/icon.

Big cyclic thrills
I was drawn to this by "ktb", but pleased to hear Drew here as well - lovely mixing btw. Wombat - I'm assuming there's an Australian connection there somewhere - you certainly gave the boys something interesting to work with. I'm just starting to become more aware of mandolin as a very interesting instrument - it will be good to hear what else you have.

Great post John.

Cheers,
Neil

Karmatoburn said 48 days ago
cyclic thrills
would have been an apt name. Mr Wildlife posted some others I've been jamming to as well, so hopefully I can help with another. Thx Neil

kassia said 49 days ago
mando
Wow, well, I loved this piece the moment Wombat posted it and the additions here are just fabulous. I love what both Drew and ktb have done. Sounds excellent - the bass adds great depth to the piece, balancing out the mandolin perfectly. ktb, your keys, as always, are awesome. Great work guys - just an incredibly fun tune - puts a big smile on my face!

Karmatoburn said 47 days ago
mando man
Thank you for the thumbs up Kassia. Wildlife Analysis has posted some very generous tracks to share.

Massive
This is magnificent stuff. First thing that grabs the attention is the beat, and then that sweet bass. The playing on the keys throughout is superb. It has mind-bending creativity and musicianship, without devolving into noodling (if that makes sense!) Lovely stuff. SOrry it's taken me so long to get here! Kudos to everyone involved. Peace.

Invention #16
Nice intro! reminds me a little of U2's song but WAY better!! The melody flows very well..but it fades to quickly you could really expand on this Holley :)
