Keywords car crash (2)teenage (2)hot rod (1)guitar (945)rock 'n roll (1)
Description i love those old teenage car crash songs and i've always wanted to do one. each of those songs is like a mini opera - a slice of the old dramatic conflict between the teenager who doesn't think they'll ever die and the fact that nobody is immune to hurt. the challenge is to write a song that is a kind of snapshot of the instant of the crash...
Lyrics Your momma said stay out of that hot rod
no good will come from a boy and a fast car
Your momma said stay out of that hot rod
no good will come from a boy and a fast car

But i'm alright baby you're alright
cause nobody dies on saturday night
yeah i'm alright baby you're alright
cause nobody dies on saturday night

i was staring through the windshield
at the lights in the trees
thinking about kissing you
later in the backseat
when i felt the traction start to go
so I gripped the wheel and shifted low

But i'm alright baby you're alright
cause nobody dies on saturday night
yeah i'm alright baby you're alright
cause nobody dies on saturday night

you like the way it scared you
the world through the windshield
rushing up to meet you
like it was glad to see you...

Teenage Car Crash Songs
What a perfect genre.

Man, I just logged on for 30 seconds to start downloading missed tunes and I smashed into this one. I love the way this kicks in at the chorus. Very dramatic and exciting musically and lyrically.

The end was a real shocker for me. The sweet strings and those chilling lyrics.... rushing up to meet you like it was glad to see you? Great poetry.

the end...
glad you liked the end - i played around alot with the composition, trying for that dramatic feel - when it gave me chills i figured it was finished lol...

You have
really captured the essence of those songs and also brought the idea bang up to date. Great song craft, performance and production.
Cheers

up to date
thanks man, great to hear that - i wish somebody mainstream or at least with some visibility was out there doing car songs - really love that genre

Fabulous
This one hooked me right in. Cool theme. Love the break.

One of you best to date.

break
when i created that break i was thinking of death cab for cutie - that's the great thing about rock 'n roll - a bit of post punk bedroom pop can end up in a tune based on a 40 + yr. old genre...

great updating of a classic pop theme.
killer, killer chorus.
nice crunchy guitars too.
a worthy addition to the tempie canon. can't wait for your next one.

inspired
thanks - i was inspired to finish this by your surf/hot rod tune a few weeks back - that's the great thing about MJ.

BTW, There's a public radio show called radio rumpus room - http://www.radiorumpusroom.com/ - that plays all surf/hot rod/rockabilly etc., don't know if you've heard of it but if not you should check it out!

surf show
I'll definitely check that out.
I forgot to mention in my comment that I really liked your line "nobody dies on a saturday night" - simultaneously tragic and hilarious, a cool combo in a song... although unrelated, the overall effect reminded me of a funny song someone posted here a while back about his girlfriend being abducted by a UFO.

(I'm assuming there was some humourous intent in yr song...)

Fantastic!
B-movie pulp meets rockin' maestro! Love this to bits! That spoken part is superb (traction!)

The end is sublime. Thank you for making my day.

Downloaded for sure!

B movie
yeah man, that's exactly it - why i love those old songs - the B movie quality, and the way that oftentimes the impulsive (and indulgent) quality of B movies says a lot more about daily "real" life than do the criitics choice type films. Cool comment, thanks!

crashing...
by the dashboard lights.

mini-opera is right. i like how you approached this. and the cheap trick style chorus is more then just a fender bender.

excellent tune

cheap trick!
i'll take that nod thanks!

nobody dies on a saturday night.
in the top 10 of best lines ever. and the last verse ain't bad either.

nobody dies
a friend turned me on to a new band, gaslight anthem - they've got an interesting concept - they take actual lyrical lines and melodies from old 80's tunes and incorporate them into tunes that are original but heavily influenced by old springsteen (the band is from jersey). ironically enough, they have a line in a song that goes something like "you don't have to die on saturday night". So i'm not as original as I'd like to be, and just proves my philosophy in general that everything that will ever be thought of has already been thought of. or something like that lol. i was out-originaled by a rip off band. Only in a postmodern world!!
