Description rtcooper and I have a fair catalogue of collabs together, and it was no surprise when this arrived in an email for me to add a bit of instrumentation. I listened and loved the song Coop had written, and over what seems like a month of sending it back and forward between us with extra tracks here and tweaks there, we've come up with this.

Coop has what I call "the Americana thing" nailed here - it immediately reminded me of The Band, so we went in that direction with instrumentation and harmonies. Coop is singing lead and playing all guitars. i play bass, drums and B3 as well as the harmony vocal.

Coop writes great songs, and I am so pleased that he asks me to help him out with them.

Enjoy!
Lyrics BLOW OUT THE MOON
(c) 2008 rtcooper

When I woke this morning
I saw the Wind come South
We were all praying for rain
To end this drought
Rain don’t come
When the wind blows south

Got bad news in the mail
And the next town over got hail
Took their crops, and flat they lay
If you’re given to it
You might want to Pray.

When I was born in this town
Grand daddy ran the farm
And all his neighbors came
The day they built the big barn
Fair is fair
Right is right
They work the Earth from dawn until night

Now bankers come around
Talkin’ like they know what to do with our ground
But if the crops don’t grow
The banks won’t lend
These crops not going to grow
Till it Rain’s again

I walk through the fields at dawn
They’re Hard as brick
The color’s gone
My dusty boots say what everybody knows
The crops are dying in the scorching sun
And now that the creek’s gone dry
There’s nothin’
Can be done

Mary Lou she left this town
Without a whisper, just slipped from sight
Was as if someone had gone
And Blown Out the Moon
To say good night
But I got to say
And I miss her more everyday
I’m glad she’s not here
To see the Heartbreak fill her town

Somebody had to stay, even if she had to go
She knows I wonder where she’s gone
And hopes that I don’t worry as the night comes on

This is
really is a great tune and as you mention very, very americana. Hits all the tomes of what makes up a wonderful ballad and the kindling of sentiments of the past where we all came from.

Good work guys. You really have something here on this one. Which to me, also, is one of your best.

Regulus maximus :)
Thanks Richard for your kind words. Coop and I tend to go off on a slightly different tack to much of what's posted at MJ when we get together, but I always enjoy where we end up.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

great song
nice song. instrumentation very well done.
the "blown out the moon" part is a nice lyric.
The whole thing is quite Dylanesque. (a good thing)

the lyrics!
the lyrics! what a great story.

great job Coop & Neil. I agree on The Band approach and sound. It has everything that one could expect and then some.

A very rich sound and the song really gets into ya. I really like the hammond in here, really adds some spice.

excellent tune.

Excellent

.. I'm with Vic .. the lyrics are heart-breakin', captivating and paint a vivid picture. The overall sound is authentic and everything sits well. Neil is great to collaborate with, certainly knows how to serve a song, in direction and not over-doing anything... an admirable skill.

Hats off gentlemen.

My only suggestion for improvement Coop would be since the backing vox are quite prominent .. you notice if they're not mirroring the lead in timing.. noticeable more on a couple of lines, vast majority are fine.

Guthrie or Dylan, I don't know which, but I dig the sound. Really grew on me as it progressed.

Nice accessorizing Neil.

Love the
Lyrics with their 'country' style sentiments tied in with a lot of monetary topicality and of course the song is good with great sounds and a 'live ' feel, good collab and a very full sound, regards M

Great collab
and a piece of Americana.. It must be rough to be a farmer and watch the crops dwindle from lack of water and watch the people you love leaving town as the economy dwindles. Coop's voice is perfect for this story song, and Neil, your added vocals are matched perfectly. Great playing and arranging, as always!

Great song gets a bondfire feeling to it for me - a huge one !! it's dl & on replay ( : WONDERFUL COLLAB a real treat this evening... (!) Very interesting with those lyrics..WOW !! Great feeling in it, a wish that Your voices were abit more 'the same' strngth/loudness ! (Your voice is mostly in left headphone-can be my headphones though - not sure / : )
Very relaxing but very heartfelt at the same time -
Courtsey to You Both !!

Using Logic I would think you could have pulled things in a little tighter.(?) I enjoyed the song but I believe you could have spent a little more time perfecting it. I feel there was too much delay in the vocals and I did have other issues with the mix like EQ... (My taste)(sorry for my honestly)

Sorry if I was a bit too critical here. You guys are great musicians and please don't be offended.

I do appreciate the song and sharing.

I know what you mean about the potential for this to be tighter, and I now have a few misgivings about how it ended up. I was going for a kind of "live in the studio" feel with warts and all (main one being the timing on my harmony).

In my defence, trying to follow Coop's drawling vocal with my Aussie accent is not all that easy, and the take of mine that you hear here is probably take 10 or 11 (a rarity for me to do so many takes) because I had so much trouble nailing it. Having said that though, I quite like the rawness of it.

Point taken though - its always good to get someone listening closely enough to a song that they can offer useful criticism.

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

FAIR IS FAIR
OK.
IF You're doing another Pass, I'm sending new Gtr Trx that fit better (better voicings). I didn't make the right transitions in the Gtrs from the original "acoustic club" version to the electric version.

Also, I think the delay on my vocal is a fluke of the conversion to 24-bit. There is no where near that much rebound in the 16-bit channels.

I have materials ready to go. Let me know if you're going ahead, eh?

Faithfully yours,
Coop

This is AWESOME! I LOVE the vocals, both lead and background. Incredible production and catchy tune. Very cool collab guys.

Lovely
This is really good - a terrific song, with really good lyrics, and the vocals are excellent. Coop, your vocal performance is outstanding here; I love the sound of your voice, and the way you deliver these touching lyrics is spot on. Lovely guitar here, kind of hovering around the mix, and that organ sounds nice. Great drum and bass sound - has that solid sound that makes me think of the 70s (and I mean that in a good way!) The sound on the lead guitar is a bit diffuse or something for me, but that's a very minor thing. A great song, a great collab - nicely done, gents. Kudos. Peace.

Bitter Sweet song about the land
and what it takes to live on it. Great job Neil and Coop. Those are some awesome lyrics, and you two really delivered the goods on them. the back tracks just plain work, and your bass sounded very good Neil.

Nice job on a wonderful song, kudos to both of you.

Tough goin', a farm during a drought...well put, here, guys...

Hope this ain't real!
Good story, hope it's not from personal experience. Nice stratospheric complementary riffage here. If you ever want an acoustic/acoustic-electric folk-rocker to mine this farm-gone life, check into Fred Eaglesmith. See him live, seriously.

I've been away
for some time, but I've always been lurking around here regularly. Today I felt I had to write a comment again:-) This is a very very enjoyable and solid song, Neil. Didn't expect anything less from you of course:-) The voices work extremely good together. Splendid lyrics as well. It paints such a vivid movie scene (this could be a perfect soundtrack song). Nice to hear both of you guys again. Nice to be here again.

It has certain "Band" feel to it. Love the bass playing, and the harmony vocal works really well when it comes in.

Nice track -
