Description This is an experiment sort of quickly done today using Meringue, sort of influenced by Juana Molina, and at the last minute I decided to add this story by Studs Terkel from NPR's podcast of Story Corps. He passed away last week and I thought this might be an appropriate tribute to this great American Story Teller. RIP Studs.

Thanks!
Thanks for the call out!

For some reason, the voice came out really loud. I recorded that using Wiretap, which may explain that but it is a free podcast you can download from iTunes. It really started out as an experiment using Meringue. I had a free early version of this that I used a while back but it stopped working when I got my Intel mac, and they recently updated it and made the GUI really cool to look at, as it has a window that visually represents how the effect is working. It's a delay that plays backwards and forwards with various filters. It always was pretty trippy sounding, now it's trippy to look at.

Unfortunately it's not free but that's the only negative.

The other thing that was inspiring me is the new Juana Molina album, and I set out to do something like that but to no surprise, I ended up with something sort of different since I have very different tools. You can get a free Juana Molina track here:

Wow
That story is just amazing. What a wise, wise man, and what a brilliance for story telling.

You've done him a great tribute.

P.S. You've made a Juana Molina fan out of me! Thanks.

Very cool track Jim
great idea to use Studs on this - he's a quintessential story teller. our backing is wonderful - like M2 I'd love to hear alone also. I like how the percussion sounds like big metal mixing bowls sometimes. I used to have a standing lamp with a large metal shade that made it onto a lot of 4 track recordings.

Jim Bouchard said 2 days ago
thanks!
The metal bowl sounds are Tibetan Bowls samples by Sonivox. They also make a very nice Mellotron and their DVI instruments are fairly cheap. I really enjoyed this. I listened to a podcast of his interviews with people reminiscing about the Depression and it was quite intriguing sonically, and when I heard this little story, I couldn't resist sticking it in this little bit of music I'd put together.

Thanks for the tip
on Sonivox. New to me - and very interesting. I gave my daughter a Tibetan singing bowl for Christmas this year. She's getting interested in meditation and sound healing.
Again - really interesting piece of music.
