Description This is an experiment/rehearsal for an upcoming show with Volcanique (aka Dave Wald) in conjunction with Splinter. Dave is a drummer and vocalist and the idea is that he will add percussion and vocals to a piece like this in a live setting. Therefore the piece that you are hearing was created live and recorded to a Zoom H2 plugged into the line out of my old Korg Cube 60 keyboard amp.

The gear used is pictured above. I loaded my iPod with a variety of loops recorded to run for about a minute each and made four playlists (drums@60bpm - synths@60 - drums@120 - synths@120) I made another playlist of a few songs that I thought might be interesting to sample. In this piece I used Don't Turn The Light On by Can, Pick Up The Pieces by Average White Band, and Ancient To The Future by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago. These samples come in at the end.

I ran my iPod and Air FX through a Korg keyboard mixer and brought loops or Air FX sounds into the Boomerang and stacked them one on top of the other. Each time you add a new sample you can decide how much of the original sample time it should occupy by punching in, however there is no going back to correct and no adjusting of volume once it's in. Hence the need to practice, practice and the random nature of the rhythmic timing. There is no governing clock synching things up so it's a bit about luck and improv. Audacity was used for amp noise removal (great tool) and GB08 was used to master with the Psychadelic effect selected on the master track.

Many of you may find this unlistenable. That's OK - I understand. But if you're patient - you may dig where it ends up.

Quite an introduction
compelling listening, like listening to a band underwater. I reckon you could incorporate parts into other tracks. Interesting sounds and textures.

bud said 69 days ago
Thanks for giving this a go Steve
Hope you didn't get too sea sick - I could imagine it have that effect. I think I might have overplayed the phasing in the mastering.
How's it going with Slicer?

I've been curious about the boomerang. this is a cool example.

i like all the sounds you brought in to this, and where it goes.

bud said 69 days ago
Someone gave me this recently
to use - not to keep. I'm having fun with it. It's cool for guitar - but it's a bit tricky to be good with it. Takes a lot of getting used to. It has a very cool reverse effect though.

I appreciate the comment.

Wow!
That's something else.

Really well put together, great sounds and clever cutting of the other tracks.

Will there be a video of the actual performance as it sounds fascinating?

Cheers

excellent
love your experimental side. this is really outstanding, great sounds and the whole way that you put this together is really creative. i would be really happy if i wandered into a club and this is what i got. totally listenable in my opinion. may be time for another collab when you finish your current obligations.

bud said 68 days ago
Another collab would be fine
I've been missing the macjammy thing. Live is cool - but it's a bit less crafty. I miss the control sometimes - but then I love the spontaneity.

As soon
as I saw the pic I knew the download button was in effect. the layering and timing seems like it might be a hard thing to master. I am glad I downloaded bec this is one of those songs that needs to be listened to more than once also its should be taken in as a whole. The progression leads the listener to its end. If you do this live with a drummer please record it and post I am very interested in hearing where this goes! excellent and thanks!

bud said 68 days ago
Thanks Tim
It really is hit or miss and m record is not so good yet. It's cool to have to turn a bad start into something worthwhile though.

Unlistenable?
You're kidding? This is fascinating, drifting between playful and threatening, painting with exotic images and landscapes that are wall-to-wall.

At first I was moving through a vast warm ocean full of starfish and weird unexplainable creatures as pale and luminous as hair.... then some frightened whales moved past, chilling the water with their fear. I wondered what was scaring them, and then this massive, oil-leaking sea tanker ship full of rust and petrolium sank down, poisoning the water as its engines continued to pound and clank as the huge rusty hulk sank past down into the dark depths.

But then a tiny radio, still playing, drifted out of the vanishing wreckage and floated in the water, turning slowly in the murk, and as the shadowy tanker disappeared in the blackness below. And as the little radio played, the water began to clear, and the fishes and the starfish and the whales tentatively began to return, curious and drawn to the music.

(Alas, for a brief moment I also saw Homer Simpson as a teenager driving a beat-up 70s car to high school while "Pick Up The Pieces" played. Man, that episode of the Simpsons has ruined that piece of music for me forever, I think!)

Beautiful piece, this. Thanks for the visions.

Thanks Rik
Once again your comment eclipses the music in it's imagination and wit. Thanks fr stopping by.

Wildly Creative
That sort of Eastern sounding riff throughout has really got me. Even loved every bit of the fade out. I read how you did this but am really not much wiser - just think it sounds great. I too would love to hear the end result. Brilliant.
Cheers

Nice of you to dro by Len
The boomerang is just a simple looper that allows you to stack sound on sound each time you step on the pedal. It cuts the previous sounds by 2.5db to make room for the new sound so it doesn't get continuously louder.

This is one of the weirdest things...
...that I've thoroughly enjoyed... And I bet that if you stick with this, you could get something even cooler...And I bet you will...

I was totally digging that space cadet intro, and then it turned into something else entirely... I like the philosophy of this a lot, and understand your need to practice to make sure it works out OK when you finally commit in a public setting. Somehow, I can't shake the thought that if it DOESN'T work out, you'll pull it off anyway.

Cheers,
