Description “The Road Home” is the second tune in the “Woodbury Suite”. It tells the story of me being dropped off at the beginning of the class 4 road which leads to the house where we’re staying. It’s a bit of a haul...but I need to “walk it off”, as they say. I reach a crest and a small clearing. I become one with the trees as our shadows are painted by the setting sun.

This is a remake of the original 1996 recording that I posted awhile back. I've left out the compressor/limiter and added a couple of variations in the 2nd time around. So awesome to be able to just make changes like that at home.

The picture is the class 4 road I was walking home on. Lions and tigers and bears! Oh my!!!

i love
hearing all those notes played... great post. the resonator guitar is the only thing for this song, in my mind..

Yeah...
...I couldn't agree more. I play this on my Martin, which I bring to short gigs cuz it's versatile...sounds good...but doesn't pack the same "punch"...especially when ya want that treble.

Good to see you again, Alan.

Rocha Malhada said 70 days ago
don't know what to say...
Feel like I ought to say something though, even though it's "broken record" remark from me, "hey Bob, I love your pickin' stuff".

Thanks for this.

guitapick said 69 days ago
Well, Harold...
...you know what we "chatted" about, recently?

;)

Thanks, man.

anxious excitement
There is something in this piece that captures a bit of the racing of an anxious heart, then the slowing and enjoying familiar old surroundings... that is, it really seems to fit your description. And the "slow stroll" theme is gorgeous, and has a bit of some ancient folk tune we can't quite recall... it reminds me of something Johannes "Curry" would play as a slightly-updated ancient folk tune. I had almost forgotten the original, and re-read my first comment on this to you... interesting... whatever you did, I have no problem with the transitions now, very smooth and effortless. The beginnings notes start more smoothly, no bob-bles anywhere, this recording is beautiful. Gotta update my fave from the old one to this one! The Resophonic has an almost-banjo quality (the good qualities, not the bad ones :-). Super playing on this!

Drakonis

guitapick said 69 days ago
Actually, Mr. Dragon...
...your comments on the original lit a bit of a match underneath me. Some of the changes (specifically the softening of the transitions) were a direct result of your thoughts.

I also added the variations on the second time around which, imho, added a bit more dimension to the tune.

You're a good man, Eduard.

egobandit said 70 days ago
oh yeah!
I would love to be hanging out with you while your playin this I really dont think it gets any better! very cool! The changes are what really grabs me!

guitapick said 68 days ago
Be cool...
...if you could just drop by...or I could play while I watch you paint...

But it's cold up here in NYC...not so down there in sunny Florida, I'm sure...

Moviz said 70 days ago
For me
this describes perfectly, the variations you speak of in that walk home..... kind of a painting in music. Great fingering and nice tones, regards M

Like the mystery detective
some spots were it goes to a stop etc. But all of it was fun to listen to. Plus the picture disappearing around the bend adds that musical mystery feel as well.

Thanks for sharing and of course being such a great addition to MJ !

The picture...
...is my favorite spot on that road. I love it.

Sounds like that Dobro is singing to you Bob
And I like the song it's singing. Excellent recording, and flawless playing. It doesn't get any better than this my friend.

The guitar sound is awesome, and I imagine getting a good recording of it was no easy chore. But you did it and it works great. What mic and preamp did you use to get the recording, it sounds absolutely pristine ?

Great job Bob. It really does paint the picture you describe in my mind.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

guitapick said 68 days ago
You're right, Ed...
...it's a difficult guitar to record...esp because the sound is so determined by the angle of the mic. Difficult to reproduce from take to take.

I use a Rode NT3 and M-Audio Firewire 410 Interface. Nice setup...

Thanks for the listen

Enrique Gil said 70 days ago
I love the sound....
of the guitar. Specially when the melody is catchy and full of harmony. What is road 4? pardon my ignorance.

guitapick said 69 days ago
Hi Enrique...
...a "Class 4 road" is one which is so full of rocks (they can get pretty big), tree roots, ruts, etc that they don't even bother trying to plow the snow in the winter. You wouldn't want to drive your Bentley down it.
;)
I'm glad you liked this, Enrique. Thanks.

"Awesome and greeny"...
...very well put, Feter...

Glad you liked the tune...

Rather interesting piece
A rather interesting piece. Great composition with a nice thematic idea. It has the content enough to carry the tune through. Very attractive.

Only nitpick is one very easy to do something about: the guitar is out of tune. I'm not saying I always have the guitar in good tune .. sometimes it is just close to impossible to achieve a satisfying tuning .. but this one is a bit too far off.

But, as mentioned, the basic qualities of the tune are in my ears really great!

guitapick said 68 days ago
Johannes...
...I'm glad you mentioned that.

I recorded all 4 tunes of the Woodbury Suite in a day. This was the last one. Much as I love them; I was fried when I finished.

I think I let this one "slide". I didn't notice the problem with tuning until I listened on nicer speakers, later, where more of the bass shows up (it's the E strings...which is tuned to G).

I really like the feel on it, a lot, though...so I was trying to convince myself it was "ok". When I posted, I was going to ask if anyone noticed it here, in my description, but decided to wait and see if it came out. I can be pretty "particular" about stuff and wanted to see how noticeable it was to someone else.

So: thanks again.

Cori Ander said 67 days ago
haha
haha .. i recognise the phenomenon well .. after playing for an hour or so you dont hear that the guitar has "slided" .. then you notice the next day all too clear .. really frustrating thing ..

2 tune or not 2 tune
I just commented on this issue below as a new post in an offhand way. When I said I like that G-to-G thing I was actually referring to the out-of-tuneness of the 5th-fretted D string alongside the open G string. I have to say there's a funky authenticity, it's just far out enough to sound like so many great old recordings.

For some of the most idiosyncratic fingerstyle ever (though not resonator), check out Joseph Spence--a poor man, always so very poorly recorded and evidently unable to afford a guitar that would hold its pitch. But WOW.

kristyjo said 69 days ago
Very nice
Finger picking at its best. The guitar has a nice tone. (It is slightly out of tune, which I kind of adjusted to, but a little distracting at the beginning.) Very lively recording. Excellent song writing, too. Some good hummable tunes, a few riffs and arpeggios, all placed right where they needed to be. Great listening!

guitapick said 68 days ago
Thanks, kristyjo...
...I'm glad you liked it...

Vic Holman said 69 days ago
you had to say....
......lions, tigers and bears. now i got that stuck in my head.

great recording. I really like the melody here. it does reming in a way of '40's R&B swing feel.

there's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home....

Very cool
playing and intriguing composition. It sounds like you are using fingerpicks? The slight out of tuneness didn't bother me , makes it sound more bluesy. The harmonics at the end sound pretty in tune so maybe your intonation is a little off.Great song!

guitapick said 64 days ago
Fingerpicks:
Yes...a Pearse thumbpick and National steel fingerpicks. You can hear the click...but I like that with this guitar.

I think you're right: an intonation problem. I tried recording it again, totally ON the tuning and it still comes out wrong on that 7th fret E string.

Thanks, Mark.

rsorensen said 64 days ago
that guitar
sounds really good. i love the intro and how it's different from the main progression. I really like songs that start one way then take a turn. Your playing is so confident here and it seems you never come close to losing your groove. Would love to add some vocals to this

Many wonderful comments...
...above that are very much congratulatory, Bob...and well-deserved. My 2 cents is my fascination with the changes in meter and rhythm that keep infusing this number with all sorts of interest. It never gets tiring. You can really play that thing! Most impressive.
Peace.

Great tune Bob
You really give it a solid treatment on the Resi - powerful and assured without losing any of the delicacy and subtle timing. Just beautiful. I remember when you first posted the Woodbury's - this is so cool to hear in this form.

Bob6stringer said 56 days ago
A well-told story
What the... this is so rich it sounds like a 12-strong resonator! Clean picking and I love that G-to-G piece among many other little hooks that grab my attention, measure by measure. Beautiful piece, beautifully played. Not too sweet, just right, lots of "footsteps" to get to the end point.

guitapick said 56 days ago
Thanks, man...
...nicely said...many steps...I love that guitar...you're right...like a 12 string...

Macaudion said 23 days ago
Mr, Sir
It sounds like what the title reads. Imagine..., there are as many routes to "home" as there are folks who travel them... But I'd be willing to bet that anyone of, a sound and peaceful mind would tend to hear that this route that you play and speak of, it is not at all unlike a part of, at minimal, some swatch of path in the journey to where most would like to have traveled. I mean, it does sound like your playing is reflecting a sense of contentment with the work that's been done to have taken you to this point in your travels. Contentment is, king, for me.

But maybe i should just get outta my head and tell ya, thanks for sharing another wonderful piece of art, one that definitely satiates the particular appetite or mood that I seem to be in tonight.

guitapick said 22 days ago
Well....
...inside or outside of your head: I'm more than happy you like the piece, macca...and it's really nice of you to take the time to tell me so. Thanks, man...
