Description I was watching TV one day about 15 years ago, and came across a documentary about the mental institutions in my country, and how they were run up until the late 70's. It shocked and dismayed me how these poor souls were treated, both personally and medically. Up until it became known, many of these institutions were personal laboratories of the doctors running them, and remained insulated from the public by our very own government. This song was inspired by that documentary. I had trouble pitching it to the various bands I was in over the years because they all thought it was too dark and negative. I am thankful for the present day technology and for the first time I am able to hear what this song sounds like with a full band behind it.
Thank you to all who listen and sorry if this song depresses you. On a positive note, these institutions are now monitored closely and the standard of treatment has risen to an acceptable level.
Our government still refuses to acknowledge the extent of resources needed to give a lot of these people what they need, and sadly our homeless population has risen over the years because of it.

Lyrics Thorazine Dream copyright 1993 Guy Groves

Twelve long years since she's said a word
so they mostly leave her alone
They gave up tryin to get in her head
They say that there's nobody home

Wanders the halls in her thorazine dream
couldn't tell you if it's night or day
been on the inside for fifteen years
she doesn't know any other way

chorus + solo
It's cold there where she lives
deep inside her mind ya
couldn't begin to let you in
even if she tried ya
It's so lonely where she hides
deep inside her heart ya ya ya
couldn't begin to let you in
she wouldn't know where to start no
she wouldn't know where to start no no no

It's been worse since they took her sun
the windows have all been painted black
she watches the TV in the common
she keeps the wall to her back

they always fight about what to watch
till the white coats come and turn it off
and they will hurt her if she puts up a fight ya
and she knows that's how some get off
chorus + solo out

jeesh but this is a good song. irony is that i was just listening to porter wagoner's committed to parkview. subject matter aside, there are some joyfull chord progressions here...this one would have killed at the first lollapalooza...makes me want to find some mud. does that solo at the end blaze or what?

guygrooves said 71 days ago
Thanks
I really am happy you dig the song Tempi. I was having a good day that day lol the whole lead guitar track is a one take off the cuff. Thank you for the listen and kind words.

Tough but good
I really liked the vocal effect but have you tried it with a "normal" vocal over the chorus and then back to effected?

Gets better as it goes on. Great melody and the lyrics might be a touch harsh but very effective.

I liked it :-)

Cheers

Dick

guygrooves said 71 days ago
Hey Dick
It is funny you should mention the normal vocal over the chorus, I almost did it but I wasn't sure if I liked it or not, maybe I should have given it more of a chance. Thank you for the kind words and the listen.

dajama said 71 days ago
Excellent
This is a really good song about a really dark subject matter, and I think the performance is outstanding. The vocal effect works well. I think Dick has a point about mixing it "un-effected" vocals as well. Either way, this works as is without a doubt. The lyrics are really well done - getting to the heart of the subject in a telling and evocative way - very cool. Love the mix and production, too. The guitar sounds great, and the bass has great presence in my phones, although it seems a bit weighted to the left (but that could be my ears!). The solo is spot on - you really got just the right groove going. Great song - great performance. Nice job!

Great song Guy
Love the lyrics, they say so much about the things that happen to people in life.

I have to wonder why the strange vocal, especially when the lyrics are this good. I mean I can understand the effect it might have, like your stepping inside here head and listening to the song coming into her mind from the outside world. It is pretty trippy, I'll say that, and it's possible the song wouldn't work as well as it does in a normal voice.

Ok, I'll get off the analitical couch now and just say I really like it. It's strange, but I like it anyway. Great track, thanks for sharing it.

Be well and be cool Guy,

Ed.

guygrooves said 71 days ago
Ed thank you
You can take as much time as you want on that couch lol. I respect anything you have to say about anything. I am still not sure about the vocal myself, this song is going to eventually get one more record and arrangement. I will incorporate many of the suggestions that have been made. This is exactly why I love this site. If it weren't for people like yourself and some others it would be very hard to tell what might be, given a thoughtful, polite, and tactful suggestion be withheld. Hell, even sharp, mean, and nasty comments would provoke thought lol I am just glad that sort of thing isn't encouraged around here lol. Thanks again Ed.

Cool Song
Nicely done, which I'm coming to expect from you. My only comment is that I have no clue why bands wouldn't do this on grounds that it is "too depressing". I don't think it's depressing at all, on the music side of things. Most people probably wouldn't notice the lyrics actually so I can't see any harm in playing it out. In fact, my only negative comment would be that for such weighty and thoughtful subject matter the music is rather jovial, which might be a bit in conflict. But regardless it's an enjoyable listen.

perfect song
from start to finish!

guygrooves said 70 days ago
Thank you
I am flattered you think so, although is it ever perfect? lol The fact that it isn't, is what keeps me trying, and I hope I never get it perfect for that reason alone. Thanks again for the listen and very kind words.

Great song...
...about a human tragedy and pathetic govt scandal.

I'm glad the situation has improved. My step dad worked as a guard at an institution like this some years back. He had some troubling stories about what went on...

Reminds me a little lyrically/thematically of Richard Thompson's "Behind Grey Walls" (which is a HUGE compliment btw!).

Some variation on the vocal effects would have been nice. Like effecting the verses but doing the chorus unaffected.

You told me you weren't a very good lead soloist...You're NUTS man! Your soloing rocks herein!

Nice gritty sound on those rockin' guitars Guy. Pretty solid mix too.

Be well friend!

guygrooves said 70 days ago
Hey Micheal
Thank you sir your words are very much appreciated. I'm flattered by the comparison. It seems to be the consensus on the lyrics and I already have a re record planned for this. Thank you for the kind words about my soloing skills. You're hearing about everything I can muster with that one. I am getting better though, but I have never looked at myself that way, as I have always preferred to build an interesting rhythm bed for a "great" soloist to have at. Thanks again bro.

Dig the chord progression and solos

We had a similar expose of the horrible conditions, here in the States. Unreal...

Glad you got this one out, Guy.

Really rockin'
And there's nothing like a story to get an idea across. I like the juxtaposition of the dark story with the happy lyrics. A little ironic, and the sugar coating gets you to take the pill, as it were. I am glad you posted the lyrics.

guygrooves said 70 days ago
thanks KJ
I am pleased you stopped by for a listen. I am not quite sure what you mean by happy lyrics lol. I will for now assume you meant melody, as chronologic mentioned, and I must admit I hadn't thought about it until I got most of the song together and thought to myself that the music seemed a little jovial, (to quote chronologic). I decided it may work after all, and went ahead with finishing it. I must say I did mull it over for sometime before I did though. I am still going to try it with a modified effect on the vocals, and transpose the melody to a darker key at some point. Thank you very much for the listen and kind words.
Peace
Guy

Medication Time
Nice piece of pill poppin'work my friend.Love the guitar tones and the strong, drivin' pulse.Solid post overall and a subject matter I've dedicated a fair share of my life involved in.My 9 to 5 is spent among a population of individuals that require constant surpervision and regular drug intervention.
Factiod:Those dark days of institutionalized people were in large part a direct result of the faulty idea of eugenics as put into practice by Hitler's Germany and brought over to the West by American "scientists" eager to also 'experiment'.The 'religion' of Darwinism was at it's core and continues to undermind observable science, public education and the morality of the society to this day.God help us!

guygrooves said 70 days ago
Thanks
for the thoughtful and kind comment on the song. I appreciate the listen and I am thankful that you do what you do. I too believe that what happened in Germany played a large part in what was going on in our institutions after the war for many years. I also wish for God to help us, but you know as well as I do it won't happen until we help ourselves. Thank you for doing what you do.

Love the riff.
Very catchy.
Would just second the comments about the vocals.
Double track with clean effect??
Apart from that everything sounds great especially the guitars

Thanks King....
It looks as though it is becoming the consensus regarding the lyrics. It is exactly why I love this place. Thanks for the listen and kind comment.

In your face
Both the concept of the song and the wall of sound. I can dig it!

It's a dark concept but if I hadn't read the intro or the lyrics I wouldn't have really known. Though one link to the subject matter might be the vocals. They sound like they are coming from deep within the song, hard to hear, almost like a plea for help from someone trapped in one of those hellish institutions.

The guitars are great in this. The rhythm is thick attitude and the lead is just torn off with reckless abandon and skill.

guygrooves said 67 days ago
Thanks Pete
I am happy you made it by for a listen. It looks like this one is gonna get a re record and with all the advice on it so far, it will get better. I love this place for that. Thanks for the kind words, and the perspective, I do appreciate it.

Sickening truths....
I have watched those same documentaries that reveal our societies tortures against their own. Many young people spent their lives there, simply because they were an inconvinience to others...if they were not "mad" upon arrival, they would soon become so. Still today, they will not give out information about family members who lived and died there. They would prefer their secrets to die with their shame. You captured the haunting reality with perfection.

guygrooves said 30 days ago

I am happy you left a comment. I am also very glad you feel this song captured the reality of the situation. My brother thought so too.
