Well, well...
..I am here FIRST!!!

What a feeling of power and accomplishment.

Nice, clear voicings and chord choices, here, Mark. You separate the lines beautifully. I used to play in a band where they wanted me to do a lot of fingerpicking on electric. I never got it to the level you have, though.

Sweet "...messing around...", mister.

Ibstrat said 43 days ago
Thanks
I do sometimes play with a pick- there are just too many people that are way better than me at it so I prefer no pick.Besides I keep dropping them!

composerclark said 43 days ago
Well, well, well ...
I listen to everything on the quicktime player; it's always louder. Don't know why that is, though.

But this music is fantastic! A little funk, a little bossa, and as usual, your incredibly tasty playing. Interesting direction you take in the middle; completely unexpected but it fits perfectly. Kind of has elements of a Brouwer arpeggio study at times.

Man, you really went to town here! Another mood change -- happy music! -- then back to the opening material, then back to some happy stuff for the coda. Superb!

Ibstrat said 43 days ago
I'm sure
that I stole some chords from one of those Brouwer pieces. There is a fugue that he wrote that I used to play that is incredible- almost a rock n roll riff. Thanks for the comments!

announcer said 43 days ago
sounds fine here
Level on your playback window was probably set too low. Check the little thingy on the right hand side.

Love the changes here and the discordancy (is that a word?) You play chords I didn't know existed.

Interesting choice of voice on the instrument here. Sounds a lot like it should be played on a nylon or gut string acoustic in places but the electric gives it a whole new and different dimension and that jazz twist that is very effective.

announcer said 43 days ago
PS
what is that picture? and is it meant to be phallic ... is that why the you chose the title of the song. Inquiring minds want to know.... :)

Ibstrat said 42 days ago
Actually
it's a photo from a college that my daughter is interested in.We were taking a tour and kid came running up to our tourguide and said "Dude, Phish is getting back together!!" I guess this song is my Phish tribute. Thanks for the comment.

announcer said 41 days ago
Quote of the year!
"Dude ... Phish is getting back together".

Your description of the event is a perfect description of what it is like to be young and how much fun it is to be so young as to be clueless about all the rest of the troubles in the world. Brought a smile to my face just trying to remember when I was that kid.

Feter said 43 days ago
Dude!
what a strikin chords for funky tune ...enjoyed

Ibstrat said 41 days ago
Thanks
for the great comment Feter!

bageltogo said 43 days ago
could do well with this
I can hear this as a great upbeat grove, perhaps some horns and upright bass in the background. definitely needs at least a kick and snare. very enjoyable.

Ibstrat said 41 days ago
Thanks
for the comment.I don't have access to drums but maybe eventually.

Moviz said 42 days ago
You're
another whose songs I can 'fave' without listening to Mark..... I love the variations in rhythm and melody in this and it's obvious that you need a certain amount of expertise to be able to play so competently on a complicated piece like this. This really is brilliant, regards M

Ibstrat said 41 days ago
Thanks
Moviz- great to hear from you.

Relic67 said 42 days ago
cool
you certainly play the $%&$% out of that guitar.
amazing - how much improvised?. the warm clean tone is very tasty as well.

Ibstrat said 40 days ago
The
whole middle part is improvising over a 2 chord vamp then a one chord vamp. Thanks for the comment. Much appreciated!

RazorsKiss said 42 days ago
even though
i am going to write something, inside i am at a loss for words...
my skills at guitar consist of listening to some hendirx, sabbath, megadeth, and then writing songs. i dont even know how to wrap my head around what the hell is going on here.....
it is like watching Nasa launch something really big, filled with a couple tons of rocket fuel... something is going to explode!
towards the end, when you go all crazy, around the 2:45 mark, i got chills. it was so crazy. it reminded me of jazz pianists who only use their keys as percussive instruments, and to me, this is so good, it deserves more than this site is worthy of..... damn, brother, you smoke the frets....i bet your strings are made of liquid cool.

Ibstrat said 40 days ago
Well
I think that Hendrix was one of the most talented people to ever touch a guitar. The version of "Red house" from "Hendrix in the West" is a masterpiece. The only important thing in guitar playing and music is emotion. You play with tons of it- plus you can technically pull off stuff that I can't touch.Funny you should mention Sabbath- listen to my song at about 1:33 and try singing the words to "War Pigs" (Politicians hide themselves away, they only started the war)it's a direct ripoff... I mean tribute!

lengold said 42 days ago
How could I
ever say anything more apt than Allen above said:
'I bet your strings are made of liquid cool'
sums it all up very nicely.
This is fantastic.
Cheers
Len

Ibstrat said 40 days ago
Thanks Lengold
you are one of my favorite artists on this site!

So this is 'messing around', is it?
One of these days I want to hear you on stage with a bass player that can follow you wherever you go...and a drummer/percussionist who can do the same...

Maybe you could do something like Ry Cooder's 'Meeting By The River'...Get a tabla player...

I always enjoy hearing you play, Mark...

Ed

Ibstrat said 40 days ago
I would
love to jam with a tabla player Ed.Start taking tabla lessons- let's go!

yum
Your Organic spew, makes for a nice brew.

Your tone on this one reminded me a bit of Johnny A. I really loved how this number just seemed to flow effortlessly.

It was as pleasant as walking into one of those big music stores, you know the kind; with all those guitars hanging on the wall & stacks of amps and keyboards all over the place; at some off hour in the morning or late afternoon, where in some far off corner, some old timer is checking out the action of a new guitar all by himself hidden behind some big ass amp, and playing something as sweet as this, and I was lucky enough to witness all by myself.

Sweet!

Ibstrat said 39 days ago
Johnny A
is a great player- thanks for the comparison!

sloparts said 40 days ago
I hear Funk
and Bosa Nova and a few other styles in this Mark. Stretching those fingers out a little bit, and as always you make it sound so easy.

Very cool track my friend, very cool indeed. Thanks for sharing this one.

Be well and be cool my friend,

Ed

Ibstrat said 38 days ago
Thanks
Ed #2, always appreciate your comments.

Repulsive_Landlord said 40 days ago
and
a cuica would go well with the shakers, too. Cool Bossa style.

Mark
This was very nice to listen to. Very impressive. I think I may have heard your music before but, never left a comment for whatever reason. Probably just laziness. Did you record straight to the board or is your amp miked? Either way, nice tone, even if a little too mellow for my personal taste. You've definitely got the chops, my friend!

Ibstrat said 38 days ago
I'm
using a Line6 Toneport- no amp.I don't really know anything about recording.Glad you liked it!

jiguma said 39 days ago
Mark
Your consistently high quality playing is always a joy to listen to. I shut my eyes and try to picture how your left hand is chording this - to no avail. This is just great!

I've been critical of your recording quality in the past (in a nice way I hope!), but this seems to have overcome those problems - a clean and smooth piece.

Love it!
Neil

Ibstrat said 38 days ago
Actually
if you watched me play it- it's not as hard as it sounds.Strategically placed open strings can make some interesting sounds. Thanks for continuing to listen!

davisamerica said 39 days ago
Phish tribute ..lol
mark this is sweet my friend. You get such amazing cool from those 6 strings..... a master at work .... and as always ... Very much enjoyed!

Ibstrat said 37 days ago
Thanks
very much for checking out my song.

Pete_NB said 39 days ago
Tasty
What a great combination of composition, improvisation and deep themes. It really is an interesting piece, forcing the listener to pay attention.

And of course, the playing is top-notch as usual.

Ibstrat said 37 days ago
Thanks Pete
I'm glad people find it interesting- I love playing guitar!

kristyjo said 39 days ago
No-
I wouldn't put it in the funk category, really, but whatever you want to call it, it is really clean and well done, along with being smooth. I love your chord progressions, they just keep moving on in different directions, and then, surprise, you're back to your a theme just in time to go somewhere else. You get so much more out of six strings than I could ever hope to get.

Ibstrat said 37 days ago
I really
appreciate your comments.I put it under funk but it should be funk/jazz/bossa I guess.

psexnyc said 38 days ago
Dude....
I am in awe of your Funk! And, I do find this tune strangely FUNkey...and I stress the first 3 letters!

Great Post!

Ibstrat said 37 days ago

Perhaps a bit of Chet?
Well done, Mr. Ibstrat. Well done.

The guitar tone sounds like Chet Atkins.

Ibstrat said 34 days ago
I'm a big Chet fan
thanks!

Messing Around
Wow, I enjoyed this immensely.

When I mess around, I throw wacky synthesizers in. I'm glad you didn't make the same mistake.

Beautiful sounds. For a moment, I thought Stan Getz was gonna start honking his horn. He would've loved you!

Thanks for sharing.

Ibstrat said 37 days ago
Feel
free to dub in some wacky synths if you want- I haven't got any!

SJB said 33 days ago
Very cool
Maybe not what I'd call funk but you could call it anything you like because this is great picking! Very nice separation between high notes, chord voicings and bass notes. If Davy Graham had ever picked electrics I think it would have sounded like this.
best wishes to you
Steve

SJB said 33 days ago
PS
PS Is that a reflecting telescope or a large calibre weapon of some kind?

Ibstrat said 32 days ago
It's
actually a kalidescope.I love Davy Graham- one of the 1st sort of "advanced" fingerpicking songs that I learned was "Angie" (Paul Simon version) I play electric out of necessity- I injured my hand years ago and developed a weird hypersensitivity, playing acoustic is extremely painful. Thanks for the comment!

chipan said 29 days ago
Messing
I wish my messing around was this cool and coherent. This has a great mood and I could hear the shakers in my head. Very cool!
