Description I opened my mail last week and there was a message from karmatoburn. he was kind enough to ask if i wanted to be a part of a song he was working up with Jim Bouchard, z293, and an old friend of his Rich Mussacio. I gave it a listen and it was a little different than what I would normally do, but I'm always up for a challenge so I said yes. Didn't have much time, so I threw the song in my Ipod and listened for a few days. The lyrics are about the excitement of seeing someone for the first time and just knowing that there can be something between you. That something may not be entirely healthy though. Youthful idealism in the ways of romance... As soon as I got a chance I threw this vocal down really quick. I was picturing Japan, David Sylvian and weird old 70's glam. This is something a little different than what you would expect from all involved, and was a blast to be a part of. Let me know if this needs to be put under another genre.

JIm Bouchard - guitar, drum programming, mixing, mastering
Logic Pro, Garageband, all of the drums were done in Logic; as for his guitar Jim says: "I played my guitar parts through my Peavey Delta Blues with a Boss DD-20 pedal for the backwards delay parts, and pretty much straight through the drive channel on the rhythm parts. I think I used the Les Paul Junior on this one." he mastered it in Peak Pro 6, Ozone and Bias.
z293 - 1st guitar solo (sorry not sure what he used)
Rich Mussacio - guitar (of his playing John says: "I need to make sure I credit my buddy Rich Musacchio who played those wild ass leads toward the end. He did that about 15 years ago.")
Karmatoburn: keys, bass, protools
Michael2: Vocals recorded with an MXL USB mic in LE8. Of his vox, M2 says: "it's hard not to sound good when you're working with guys of this caliber."

its like a big feast waiting for the best meals to
enjoy ...indeed a superband ...everything so delicious !
the keys the singing the bass boost atmosphere !! ..
the lead guitars ..so spacey ..a true hit ...just Great !
in all the facets ..thnx alot for sharin !!!!

michael2 said 93 days ago
thanks Feter
these guys are amazing huh? my part was really nothing more than coming up with a vague idea for some lyrics and a melody and then turning on the mic and seeing what came out. it was a thrill working with everyone.

dolby said 93 days ago
Seriously...
...one of the most original pieces of music heard here at MJ central for a long time. A great 'supergroup' collaboration! Those drums sound terrific - how did you get that sound Jim? - they have so much space and a real live feel. The vocal and the whole arrangement is tip-top; mysterious, slightly jazzy, unique. If I have one minor quibble, there is too much guitar soloing for me (this is personal taste, nothing else...), but Mr Musacchio certainly can play. Other than that, a real, real treat - thanks for posting.

thanks Dolby
this is something i never would have done on my own, so it was great fun for me. Jim is some sort of wizard obviously, makes me feel like i need to take a couple of months off work and get into some serious drum programming. very inspirational to hear those drum tracks. thanks for listening and commenting (i'm sure the other players will read and reply).

Karmatoburn said 93 days ago
thanks
to you Michael for being up for something new and lending your talents. Without vocals and a strong melodic theme its just another jam :-)

michael2 said 93 days ago
yeah
it turned out cool i think. thanks so much for asking me to be a part of this one. i've been having trouble getting anything down lately, so this was perfectly timed for me. the part that i think was cool is that we came from such different places on the tune, and yet it gelled quite nicely IMO. thanks again.

davisamerica said 93 days ago
this is huge!
Guys ... this is totally great .... as it should be with all the talent included here .... amazing and hats off to all !!

michael2 said 93 days ago
thanks DavisAmerica
glad you liked, Karma is the one who came up with the music, everyone else added there inimitable touches, and i got to whine over the top. much fun for all involved. thanks so much for checking it out.

Wonderful stuff.
Quite the lineup here. I have no idea how Jim got those drums sounding so good. Love all three guitars. Lots of personality in the vocals. Very special. The song itself (by Karma, I'm assuming) is just too cool.

michael2 said 93 days ago
thanks roca_atomica
glad you liked, as the king of MJ prog this is high praise indeed. i think everyone else came at this from a more jazz/fusion/rock direction and I approached it from more of an obscure 70's glam point of view. i was always really into Japan's records where they mixed rock, glam, electronics and some jazzy touches. worked out nicely together I think. thanks again for the listen.

You guys
are such a sexy bunch. As usual, I like to see your lyrics. My heart can't take all this heat. Great collaboration. Thanks.

tempie said 93 days ago
great groove
great groove as expected from karmatoburn. vocal styling is perfect for the tune, love the transition from slur in the verse to growl in the chorus. reminds me of about ten different artists all at once - very cool.

Great guys
Really dig the vibe on this one. Very creative and original.

M2, very nice vocals, brother.

Fun!
Maybe this song should end up in the Second Chance Challenge column because it was one I almost forgot about. It must have been over a year ago when karmatoburn sent this to me, and it was as a collection of individual aiffs that needed to be put together. He had a guide mix and the individual parts, and I dragged everything into GB to figure out how to go about fitting into this collaboration. When I took a listen I thought the basics were pretty great but the drum track needed some beefing up and there was a rhythm guitar part that was played on a software instrument guitar. So I went about replacing the rhythm guitar and just kept recording parts. I replaced karma's drum track with Drums on Demand loops and sent it back to karma and he was cool with it. It just needed a vocalist to step up but that seemed to take forever and I almost forgot about this. It got moved onto a drive and I didn't hear anything else about it for ages.

Last week karma sent me what Michael recorded and it was really perfect. Michael wanted to change some things in the file I'd come up with so that it worked better with his vocal tracks, so I offered to mix it, and then when I opened up my GB file in Logic and dropped the vocal tracks into it, I realized that there were some things that just wouldn't work, mostly the Drums on Demand loop track I'd thrown together. I've started using EZ Drummer more and more for drums, as it's a very flexible and realistic sounding software instrument that really has altered the way I work entirely. I got turned onto EZD when working on Nolan's CD. The drums are from the Nashville Kit expansion pack of EZ Drummer while the basics of the groove is from the Groove Library of the Vintage Kit EZD pack, but highly tailored to the song. I did some massaging of the bass track and the various guitar parts and voila! I love Z's playing so much, always have since finding him on MacJams, as well as everyone else on this track, and this was a joy to work on, very groovy. It's a weird amalgam, but that seems to be par for the course for me.

Vibe
Enjoying the cool vibe of so many musicians playing together. Special kudos to Jim on the drum programming. It sounds like a real drummer responding seamlessly to the players as they add their solos. Cool.

Thanks
Bill

OK This Might Be
A little embarrassing but it doesn't really matter this is a great job by everyone and Jim nice job on the mix. But guess what...it's not me so we need to find out who did the great first solo. This song has taken many turns over such an extended period of time it's no wonder something got lost in the mix (no pun intended). Anyway I wish I could take credit but I can't so lets just enjoy.

Jim Bouchard said 92 days ago
huh
Well I thought it sounded a bit like you. I wonder who it was...it sure isn't me, that much I know. LOL

michael2 said 92 days ago
oh man
the plot thickens. this is crazy, but you know it would have been even better had you played on it. this is like one of those moments where the arena rock band hits the stage yelling "hello cleveland." only thing is, they're actually in baltimore.

Karmatoburn said 92 days ago
omg
this is my bad. I should have caught this. I feel terrible. The time lapse, similarities in style and focusing on everything but. Z293 please accept my humblest apologies. For you to have waited this long, and then I miss that. No excuse. Your solo rocked. Now to find my hari kari knives

Z293 said 92 days ago
No Worries
To all, I beleive the best solo was choosen and that's all that counts.

Vic Holman said 92 days ago
slick
excellent job guys. sounds great.

To me it's a bit of the best of the fusion, R&B sound that was very well defined in the 70's. I'm saying that as a good thing because it has seem to have gotten lost over the years. Whole lotta soul here.

Relic67 said 92 days ago
fun
very enjoyable. the guitar solos are kickass! drums do sound great.
nice singing too - kinda jazzy laidback vibe, rather soulful.
great post folks.

There is no right genre
unless far f*ing out is a genre. Excellent collab all the way around. Really well put together and your vocals fit in perfectly. I heard a little echoroom for a moment - which was fun. I like the low under your breath ending. This reminds me a little of the work Phil Manzanera was doing solo in the eighties. Killer guitars, bass, drums, production. Yeah!

you guys got talent! Great song. In my opinion, ready for radio time.

I think
this is more soul than art rock but great and unexpected nonenthless.
Solid rythm section and a fine and energetic performance for everyone involved.
You should try a couple more one of these days.It will worth the effort judging for this song.

Oh Wow
Way to go Mike and friends. This is a killer song with some very over the top playing. Love the theme, even if it has been a "few" years since I've had that "youthful idealism"

Great track all around, but especially the vocal you did.

Be well and be cool, all of you

Rockin collab!
Excellent jamming! What a great vehicle for Michael's marvelous vocals too!

Really good production. I can't believe how authentic those cymbals are sounding in the headphones.

Nice keys throughout as per usual...Soaring lead guitar work!

BRAVO gentlemen!

Be well all!

I just heard the later posting of this by Jim. I commented that your vocal performance makes it for me.

I like the beefier drums and bass in this version, but then again, your voice shows through more in the later version, and of course we get to hear Z293's solo in that one too.
