Description Uluru - Ayres Rock

Why I got to thinking about this place I have no idea, but as I was building this up, i came into my mind. Originally I was going to call it Mango Tree but Ayres Rock just seemed to fit it perfectly. I went looking for a picture of Ayres Rock and found out the the official name for it is "Uluru"

That actually sounded better to me for some reason so here it is, a musical homage to Uluru aka Ayres Rock in the Northern Territory of Australia, and to all my Australian musical brothers and sisters.

I hope you enjoy this piece. Be well and be cool,

Ed

well this is pretty amazing and a total surprise. Man i love your guitar on this and extremely cool backing. The groove just gets better and better as the song progresses. Ed you are amazing my friend!

Thanks Jack
I have no idea where this came from, or why it's what it is. Earlier today I started messing around with some loops to find a drum groove so I could lay down a bass line and some guitar tracks. Next thing I know, it's 10 o'clock at night, "Uluru" is staring me in the face on my monitor, and the song is posted here and 2 other sites. And for some reason, I kept thinking of Neil Porter and our friends in Oz. Hence the dedication to all our Aussie Bro's and Sis's.

The more I got into it the better I liked it, even though it is just a simple groove with virtually no chord changes. Now what I need is for someone to pick it up and make a legitimate song out of it.

Anyway, thanks for listening Jack, and the kind words. Very much appreciated, especially after listening to "Mr Big". Has anyone ever told you that you've got a lot of real talent my friend? Well you do, and in spades.

Be well and be cool my friend,

Ed

Very cooooool
Loved every second of it Ed. This is a perfect blend of old and new. Great synth work as well as guitar. The horns sounded really good. Everything blended nicely. Production is great as always. I would suggest that if you can, you might want to elevate your monitors to ear level, and set them to make an equalateral triangle with your ears. Nothing really wrong with this mix Ed. It is just a visual observation, as I was looking at your studio setup. Totally worth the download thanks bro.
Peace
Guy

Hello Guy,
Glad you came over and listened to this. and enjoyed the track. It just kind of came out of nowhere yesterday while I was playing with some rhythms in the studio.

Thanks again for the great comments on the production and mix, I was experimenting around trying to get a little bit of an in your face rawness to it, especially on the guitar parts.

Having to do with the speakers and the equilateral triangle, there are actually 3 different sets of speakers there in the picture. The big JBL's down below the desk, a set of white Minimus 7 forming the equilateral triangle at ear level, and on the main deck of the workstation there's a set of Boston Acoustic Computer speakers with a sub woofer under the desk.

Depending on what I'm working on I usually use the JBL's and the Minimus 7 together to try and get a more accurate idea of how everything is sounding. Then I'll turn off, first one set, and then switch to the other so I can hear how it sounds on the different types of speakers. For listening to just the JBL's, I stick my head down under the desk so I get the full fidelity. I usually use the Boston Acoustic speakers after the track is done just to check it one more time. That doesn't mean I always get it right mind you, but it does give me a chance to hear the track in a different listening environment.

I agree with your point about the equilateral triangle being very important when making a mix though. That's the only way to know where things are in the stereo field, and to know if the mix is balanced.

Thanks for taking time to point that out about the speakers, it was a very observant and thoughtful comment and I appreciate it. I also appreciate the kind words on the track my friend.

Be well and be cool, Guy

When you get to know a little about Uluru, it is quite an awesome rock formation. I wanted to get a little of that rawness into this track to represent that wild feeling the rock has.

Glad you came by and listened to the song my friend, and I appreciate you taking time to leave the great comments on it. Thanks again Feter.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

Groovy Ed
This is really well put together. Great guitar sounds and the synths are excellent.

I really like the way you change the backing subtly throughout so the texture is shifting.

Nice work :)

Cheers

Great job on Mr. Big by the way. It's an awesome project.

This one just came put of nowhere, but I like how it turned out. After listening to it with fresh ears this morning, I can hear room for improvement, but it still sounds okay.

Glad you listened to it and liked what you heard my friend. Thanks again for the great comments and for listening.

Be well and be cool Dick

Deep groove Ed
killer guitars. Love this track. I recently heard this cool story about the Aborigine. While trekking great distances they'll suddenly stop for no apparent reason and wait in indeterminate amount of time before proceeding. When asked why, the response was "We stop to let our spirits catch up - and continue when they have".

sloparts said 95 days ago
Thanks Kevin
I wouldn't be surprised by the story you heard, the aboriginal people of Australia are a very spiritual people. I sometimes think it wouldn't be a bad idea for us to all stop once in a while and let our spirits catch up to us.

Thanks for dropping in and listening to Uluru Kevin, it is much appreciated, as are you kind words on it. Thanks too, for sharing the story about the Aborigine , that was interesting to read.

Be well and be cool my friend,

Ed

Great mix
Unusual instrumentation - I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I heard the didge at the beginning. It's really quite an eclectic mix of styles and timbres - that's why you can get away with such a classic chord progression, I guess. Then you throw in a few guitar licks, and it's a piece of music. Cool.

sloparts said 94 days ago
Thanks Kristyjo
I guess you're right. If you mix it up enough, (no pun intended), you can get away with being lazy and no one will notice. I did think about going back through and making some chord changes throughout the piece, but because of the primitive nature of the Didgeridoo, I decided it would be more trouble than it was worth.

About mixing different styles, that's becoming my stock in trade around these parts.

Thanks for listening my friend, and for the great comments. I appreciate you taking time to do that and I always look forward to reading your thoughts on my stuff.

Be well and be cool Kristyjo,

Ed

I've said it
before and I'll say it again - you have a remarkable range and breadth to your musical talent and vision and ability. What's truly impressive is that your creations in different genres and styles never feels forced or contrived; there's always the sense that you follow your muse and sometimes it's a country and western song and sometimes it's...well, this! And this is very cool. I really think the lack of chord changes works; it kind of echoes the hypnotic , relentless (in a good way!) nature of the instrument (or at least that instrument as I've heard it). Changes would introduce a mood dynamic that would interfere with the ambience in a negative way (in my opinion). If you were to introduce changes on some future version, I would suggest just one or two for emotional impact. The guitar on this is lovely, and there are some lovely runs. Nice use of the keys, and percussion. Terrific production and mixing as ever. This is way cool. You never disappoint, my friend. As soon as I see your name, I know I have a treat in store. Kudos. Peace.

dajama said 94 days ago
Oops
Just reread this - by 'the instrument', I mean the didgeridoo! Sorry - brain overheating! Peace.

sloparts said 94 days ago
Thanks David
As I was reading this, I realized the the "Instrument" you mentioned had to be the Didgeridoo. I too get and overheated brain sometimes, but when I do I usually stick my foot in my mouth and say something terribly stupid. I do that a lot in case you hadn't noticed.

Not to worry, I knew what you meant. And I guess I do follow my muse when she's with me. When she's not I just close up shop and go home until she comes back. Thank God she always does come back or I'd be having a fire sale on computer and musical equipment, instead of always buying more.

And I'm here to tell you, that I'm as often surprise by where I end up as anyone. She can be fickle, but she's always true to me.

Thanks for all the great comments. I'm glad what I do ends up pleasing you and giving you enjoyment. Your kind words are always very much appreciated my friend.

Be well and be cool Dave,

Ed

Thanks Tim
That's some pretty heavy company you've got me in man QJ and America. Not sure it's deserving my friend, but I'll take it anyway.

Sometimes this stuff just comes to me. Not in a flash, but one piece at a time. you know, Set the tempo, find the drums, work up the bass line and then go a little crazy plugging in the parts that rock my world with what's already built. Following the muse is what I call it and letting her have free reign to lead where she wants to go. Even down to the title and artwork.

Quincy Jones ? Damn man thats a heavy duty compliment and I sincerely thank you for even mentioning his name in my presents much less in reference to something I did.

Glad you enjoyed this track Tim, and I thank you again for the kind words.

Take care, be well and be cool,

Ed

Like the big didge
Uluru is certainly an Australian icon Ed - I like the big didge sound you used in this. For me, Uluru (or "The Rock" ) is more a spiritual place than you've described in this piece, but that doesn't mean I'm not enjoying this. I just tend to hear very limited traditional sounds - didge and boomerangs and the sounds of stomping feet on bare earth - when I think of it. You've put together the pieces of this song puzzle well.
Cheers,
Neil

sloparts said 91 days ago
Thanks Neil
I thought about the spiritual aspects of Uluru when I was putting this together, but was unsure how to portray that in the description or the music without stepping on some ones toes so to speak. Logically, it seemed to me that this place would have to have been considered a very spirit filled place by the Aboriginal people of Australia and I imagine others who have lived their whole lives in the shadow of such a wonderful place.

If I manage to live long enough, I'd like to visit your country someday, but in truth, it probably won't ever happen. Unless of course a rich uncle dies and leaves me his fortune. ;-)

Thanks again for coming and taking a listen my friend. I'm glad you enjoyed this track, even if it is outside what you would have liked to have heard in relation to this beautiful spot on the Australian landscape.

Take care, be well, and be cool,

Ed

... looks like that new desk has helped you organize more than your messy gear; you're becoming a studio pro, Ed. Nice synth!

Thanks Bob
I've been called a Pro before, but I don't think they meant in the studio. They said it in a kind of sarcastic way as I recall.

Glad you listened and liked the track Sixer. Thanks again for the visit and the kind words. Say high to the little one and the wifee my friend.

Cool
I liked this one, straight off ,I like the blend of a bluesy jazzy feeling with the rythmn really pushing it along.Reminds me of a couple of tracks off ...wait for it ...James Last's album 'Well Kept Secret'...thats my street cred gone....The horns just give a something extra.I don't think it particularly screams out for a lyrical song ,maybe the occasional vocal punctuation
(Love For Sale W.K.S for eg).But qanyhoo thats up to you..cracking good tune Grommit er..Ed.

Glad you like it my friend and I appreciate the kind words about it. Thanks again for listening Chris.

p.s. No lyrics in the works for it, at least not in the immediate future.
