Keywords You can play that again (1)
Description Thanks to whomever launched the Second Chance Challenge. I was motivated to sit down today and take a crack at Feter's Classical Challenge that escaped my efforts earlier this year. For the most part - the wonderful music submitted to Feter's Eine Kleine Nacht Musik MJ fit the "classic" classical form. This however fits more into the pop serialism quasi classical compartment. Whatever that is. I also think I might have been influenced by all the Leonard Bernstein tributes I've been hearing this weekend.
Hope you enjoy it.

Love the interweaving of highs and lows. The constants that keep introducing new sounds that gets more and more intense. Enjoyed!

bud said 95 days ago
Thanks Tim
this was fun and happened fast. Easily coulda spent more time on it - but it felt good as a quick improv - and I felt like I had to get back in the saddle again. It's been a while since I've just knocked something out quick for fun. Glad you enjoyed it.

thoddi said 95 days ago
cool sounds
Are this all loops or are you playing this yourself? Cool sounds anyhow:) Just like listening to the sound track from a James Bond movie from the 70's...

bud said 95 days ago
All loops
edited - penciled - tweaked and slipped around - but no instruments were harmed in this creation. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. Hadn't thought of Bond - but you're right. Wasn't that John Barry?

bud said 95 days ago
Once again - you're too kind Feter
This was a quick bit of fun - and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the Classical Challenge - or this might never have happened.

You Deserve A Second Chance
Glad to hear this wonderful piece of music that might have never been written.

You've motivated plenty of us in the past bud.

Thanks

Thanks SC
I appreciate what you're doing here. Great idea.

nice of you to take the time to listen and comment.

Unexpected delight!
Geez Kevin...I didn't realize you had this sort of thing in you. You are definitely multi-talented my friend.

Waltzing in the Twilight Zone!

Be well!

bud said 94 days ago
Thanks for dropping by Mike
I just started with a little idea and let it lead me. Glad you could dig it. Loved your Ridd cover.

Char said 95 days ago
It is dark
and it is foreboding: something is coming. I was thinking about the Edgar Allen Poe stories made into movies with Vincent Price. Since it sounds like a dance, I'd say this would've fit Masque of the Red Death. It has an un-peaceful, un-easy feeling. Would work for a Halloween ball. Thanks.

bud said 94 days ago
Gosh - it seems I'm going dark
guess this has some tension and undercurrents. I thought it was kinda quirky and fun - but I'm a poor judge of my own work. I hear what you're hearing - and I grew up reading Poe. Good choice.

five_extra_arms said 94 days ago
Heizen Lows
Like ego said, those deep dark tones and those flutey highs sounds really build into a big and unique sound. It almost sounds like something off a Mike Oldfield album.

Cool bud. You back from France?

bud said 94 days ago
Good call on Mike Oldfiled
I was heading there as soon as the tubular bells came along. I always dug what he was up to - especially when he was working with Kevin Ayers. Thanks for the visit. You coming to the NY Decom? Sent you an invite. How's Katie doing?

Vic Holman said 94 days ago
waltz street shuffle
different is good.

cool waltz you made up here. i really liked the second half with the additional instruments. cool

bud said 94 days ago
Nice hearing from you Vic
I kinda think I let part one go a little too long without changes - but I was getting into the repetition.

davisamerica said 94 days ago
fun is good dog!
ok kevin .... you do this "dark" and "quirky" stuff extremely well ... just who the heck are you really??? ;-]

bud said 94 days ago
I'm just an average terrier
who's into music. That so strange?

paul f. page said 94 days ago
I will..
...never think of a waltz in quite the same way after hearing this...Well, it's sort of a waltz 1-2-3 // 1-2 ///1-2-3... Wow. This is SO inventive and beautifully orchestrated, Bud. WAY DIFFERENCE from anything else I've heard from you. Most intriguing and delightful. You have a lot of command of the effects and such, too. Really well-mixed. Now I can LEARN something from this. Thank you.
Peace.
Paul
P.S. End seems awfully abrupt...let it ring a few moments longer.

bud said 94 days ago
I wish I knew what I was doing
and exactly what you're talking about with the counting of the time. I just got lucky cooking up a dish and kept adjusting the flavors till it felt worthy of serving up. So glad you enjoyed it. The interesting thing about working with loops is you really can play by ear.

dajama said 94 days ago
Very cool
And very different from what I would expect from you. Of course, I should know by now that you are full of surprises! This is very nicely done. Makes me think in a way of Michael Nyman. Nice arrangement and lovely use of different elements to create an offbeat mood. Cinematic and engaging. Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.

bud said 94 days ago
I like Michael Nyman
Very kind comparison. Thanks for stopping by.

lengold said 94 days ago
I can see this
as a cinema track bud. Lovely listen.
Cheers
Len

bud said 94 days ago
Thanks Len
good hearing from you. I'm finally getting back in the swing of things around here.

rsorensen said 94 days ago
Impressive
this sounds great. i felt 'on edge' throughout this, and I think maybe that's what you were going for. love those big horns that come in halfway through. Definitely has a Bond feel when they do. Great job, Bud.

bud said 93 days ago
I saw Goldfinger as a kid
when it first came out. God I loved it - especially the title sequence. Thanks for stopping by Ridd.

michael2 said 93 days ago
beautiful
very cool track Kevin, a little danny elfman vibe (sort of carnival like i guess). i just had to hit play again, this is really great. love your choice and the approaches you used in the instrumentation. very cool.

bud said 93 days ago
Thanks Michael
Elfman is cool. So far this tune is all things to all people. I think I dipped into the magic of Muzak.

guitapick said 93 days ago
I'm a fan of Bernstein's...
...and I can hear some of that in here. I hear Phillip Glass, too.

You're choice of instrumentation is really effective...nice piece, Kevin.

bud said 93 days ago
Glass was my first influence going into this
then I took a left turn and got into sonorities and accents. That's where I felt some of the stabs from West Side Story with the horns. Nice of you to take time for this .

timothy devine said 93 days ago
Hey bud
This got me thinkin bout Gil Evans Spain w/ Miles
you can have bass2x play the muted trumpet
and you got the new millennium version
great work man, gonna download it and keep it on my chain
peace out
tm
ps
I was on your home page here and you got those two great videos
way cool vids
when the first one came to an abrupt ending i almost fell off my chair
captivating to say the least ;)

bud said 92 days ago
Thanks for stopping by
I love how this tune reminds people of so many different things and they're all things I'm into. Glad you had a chance to check out the vids. Time to do a new one.

Relic67 said 92 days ago
twilight zone
really cool. I love the marimba, or is it xylophone, sound towards the end.
tense, eerie vibe maintained throughout, builds nicely... effective...
fun to listen to... thanks for posting!

bud said 92 days ago
It's vibraphone towards the end
it was cool how a jazz loop slipped into the mix as easily as it did. I thank jam packs for the success of this piece - I was just a conduit. Thanks for your time and comment.

kristyjo said 92 days ago
so-
how many tracks did you end up using, anyway? This is very interesting, and has lots of twists & turns, despite you using the same core loop throughout. how d'ya do that? :)

bud said 92 days ago
Hi - and thanks for stopping by
I think in the end I used about 12 tracks - but only about 6 at a time. I found loops that were similar in nature and then tweaked them to create the interplay I was looking for. By the end the original tracks were gone - it was a progressive addition/subtraction process.

sloparts said 75 days ago
Very Cool track Kevin
I like the way you kept this piece evolving and changing throughout it. Kind of dark and mysterious and more than a little foreboding to be sure.
The high parts against the lows at time made it sound like some kind of macabre dance of the zombie clowns or something.

Okay, who are you and what have you done with Bud,

Great job my friend, thanks for finishing it up and posting it.

Be well and be cool,

Ed
