Description Repeat After Me

First new song for a while. I've been sitting on this for a ages and finally got around to remixing recently.

Basically, over the last few months I've upgraded my kit a bit, so I now have some desktop monitors and a natty set of Sennheisser headphones to mix on. The other big change is that I've finally got a (half) decent mic which has helped me improve the quality of my vocals (which, ironically, are distorted slightly on this track!!!) but you should get some idea from the backing vocals - which I'm pretty happy with. Incidentally, I used the vocal transformer on the b.vox to give me a guide how to sing 'up a 4th'. I then went back and sang the lines live - and am really happy with the result.

I've never considered myself much of a guitarist, but I'm pretty happy with some of the bits in here - although I'm still struggling to get a half decent acoustic guitar sound - maybe I Just need a new guitar???? Any excuse!

Enjoy the track and let me know what you think. As always, if anyone fancies having a go at remixing this then let me know.

Cheers,
Phil
Lyrics Repeat After Me

You could be the one
You could be the chosen one
You could bend the rules
You could play the genius or fool
You could be the Time Magazine man of the year
The smoke that keeps the mirror clear

This could be the time
When you change the ridicule to sublime
And write another line
Where all the narratives intertwine
This could be you nomination for the Man Booker Prize
The ghost who hides behind closed eyes

(chorus)
‘Cos I don’t admit to much you see
When I think you’ve got a problem with me
So I’m trying to act diplomatically
Repeat – please repeat after me

So I could be the truth
Now, how might that fit in with what you do?
Isn’t it just great
Listing all the things you like to hate
You could be a reconstituted Silvia Saint
As you try to make it straight……

Nice Song
I enjoyed the lyrics and your voice sounds great, but I just wish the distortion wasn't there.

Your guitar playing rocks.

Great song!

i tried to join up the all the images
in my head as i listened. very nice tune, like the vocal and the sweet guitar playing.

dolby said 93 days ago
Thanks...
..Steve. Joining up the images probably isn't a good idea! I have no idea what I'm on about, but if you find out then let me know :-)) Thanks for listening!

The Infinites said 96 days ago
Nice one!
I agree with Bob on the distortion, if your vox was clean it would have suited the song more. Musically, the song is crystal clear and crisp and the composition is very pro. I like your words and playing; this is a fine song indeed.

I like this a lot...
I guess I'll join the crew who would prefer the non-distorted vocal... I think I'd LOVE a 'treated' vocal, along the lines of Peter Greenstone's stuff, but the distortion, at least on my headphones, is just a little grittier than I think I'd go for...

I think you did a terrific job on that lead break. I really like it. The lead and the little arpeggiated thing...

And I think the song is very strong. Good lyrics, rocks right along, and I like your singing on it...

Ed...
...thanks for your considered comments, as always. Yes, I'm pretty pleased with the lead break - although the actual quality of the signal causes me headaches. I had a demo of this and the original solo worked much better - but hey ho you can't win 'em all. I'm still working through different approaches to recording my guitars and I'll get there in the end!

As for the distorted vocal - well - I probably agree with all the comments about this - in my mind I was after something like The Eels (very megaphone sounding and creepy) but compromised and ended up with a sound that was neither fully distorted, or fully clean. I'm sure I'll go back and try a clean version.

Thanks again,
Phil

well what they said.

great tune all around. really like the chorus, though the backing vocals could of come up a bit. IMHO

second thought
after another listen, I actually like the distorted vocal, has a Strokes vibe to it.

Song-
Nice piece of songwriting. But, I agree with Five Extra Arms about the distortion on the vocals. Should be clean in my opinion.

Very, very good song, though.

Nice stuff!
Great songwriting, as per usual. The distortion is curious. Is it unintentional, having something to do with the way the mic is recording? I have an AKG 200mic and it's never had an inherent distortion. How do you plug it in? It could be a problem with your interface. I also hear a little crackling in the right channel before the song gets started, so there's something in there that needs to be tidied up, but it could be another sign of something stuffed up in your signal chain.
Other than that, and maybe despite that, this is a very good song! I love those harmonies! They really are a great little touch.

The folly of compromise!
Hi Jim, thanks for your comments, appreciated as always.

The distortion on the voice is intentional - see my reply to Ed with regard to what I set out to do (in my mind I want to make totally uncompromising recordings like the Eels, or Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot"), but I'm afraid I got scared at the last moment and backed off the distortion on the voice. It should be all or nothing, I agree - but ended up somewhere in the middle. Similarly the buzz you hear at the very beginning is a 'static' effect out of GB - it actually runs for the first few bars up to when the vocal comes in - but again, I backed off at the last, so should have removed it altogether. Ah well, we live and learn!

Thanks for the comments,
Phil

Not sure why
You're unsure of your guitar playing.
It sounds great to me.
Nice texture and layout of song.
I like the space between all the instruments and the guitar compliments all of it.
Good stuff

dolby said 92 days ago
Thanks Kingbee
Glad you could stop by. Appreciate it -

Nice work!
Your vocals on this one remind me somewhat of John Mann's work with The Spirit Of The West (which is a GOOD thing).

Thoroughly enjoyable rockage friend!

Be well!

tempie said 93 days ago
groovey tune!
this has a michael penn feel to it - or billy bragg - i really like the Garcia-ish rambling little lead between stanzas and at the end. The chorus is a nice energetic lift away from the very breezy and cool verse. i'd go with your "church" voice for this tune - you seem to have a good voice, i don't think you need the distortion. drums are great too dude. thanks for the download!

dolby said 92 days ago
Cheers Craig
You have TOTALLY made my day with the Michael Penn reference - I'm a massive fan, and along with his missus Aimee Mann he is a real influence, so cheers for that! Glad you liked the song - will check out some of your stuff.

The mix on this is perfect. I really liked the acoustic guitar bits hiding behind some of the verse sections. The solo works really well. The composition is top grade, per your norm. I really, really like this song. It's catchy, smart, and it sounds like it could be a cover of a song that was supposed to go on Rubber Soul. I'm really digging this. When I get home I'm definitely DL'ing!

I think this is one of your best. It has the whole package in my mind (lyrics, sound, vocal performance). Love it! The kind of song I'd wind down a day with.

"The smoke that keeps the mirror clear" -- I love it!
