Description I'm not sure if there was a 'Summer of Love' challenge? If there was this is very late...
Lyrics Summer 1967
Known as the summer of love
A time of happenings and a time of gatherings
And songs of peace and freedom
Concerts in the open air
Crowds come from everywhere
Then tell me what went wrong

Music set to a psychedelic beat
Go and get your clothes from Carnaby street
Twiggy on the cover of a magazine
She was the face for a new generation
Scott McKenzie on the radio
And flowers in the rain
Then tell me what went wrong

Summer 2008
'67 is just a memory
So much crime on our streets
And unrest in the Middle East
It promised so much
A world of hope and liberation
Then tell me what went wrong

Sweet memories
Love it... Cheers

Peter Bauckham said 108 days ago
Memories indeed...
I think that was the year I started school. England in the 60s was pretty run down really but there seemed to be more optimism - it's all doom and gloom these days. Thanks for your support.

Very Daring
Titling your song "Summer of Love".

But, you did it. A cheerful, positive song. Has that appropriate English vibe, which is clean and driving.

Good one Peter.

Peter Bauckham said 108 days ago
Daring...
well that's me Dave. Nearly got called 'What Went Wrong' but thought 'Summer of Love' sounded cheerful. Glad to hear that the English vibe runs through it.

Peter Bauckham said 108 days ago
Thanks Jie
The chords are (roughly) C, Em F, G and Am, Em, Am, G with a Capo on the fifth fret. Glad you like the way they sound on this. It's nice to look back.

Better late than never!
Great sound you've achieved here Peter. Nice clean and pro-sounding mix!

Pensive lyrics evoke long lost feelings and images...

So glad you're back in the saddle dear friend.

Be well!

Peter Bauckham said 108 days ago
Thanks Mike
for all your support. I do hope your break brings you back revitalized. I spent most of Saturday finishing this off to meet the deadline...!!! Glad you found the time to listen. I'll have to start thinking about a follow up song!

I hear ya
WHat went wrong ... I like the tone of your voice on this. the background guitar works real well. A very thought provoking song!

Peter Bauckham said 108 days ago
I was going
to call this 'What Went Wrong' but thought 'Summer of Love' sounded more positive. I recorded about eight guitar tracks I think for this one. Thanks for dropping by.

Wistful
It's great finding new music and new musicians. This is 100% solid, virtual gold. The arrangement and mix hold together tight as a puzzle, yet the edges are still there, compression hasn't over-blended them. Plus: The nostalgia trip - I remember this stuff! Not quite nostalgic in the sad sense so much as wistful.

Bob6stringer said 109 days ago
on second thought...
... well, yes, sad - very sad. And also a valued, new song in my playlist rotation.

Peter Bauckham said 108 days ago
Bitter Sweet
I do like looking back (normally with rose coloured glasses) and comparing with today. I glad you liked the production - I'm a bit of a hi-fi nut, so I'm very critical of sound quality. I'm trying to avoid 'too much compression' which seems to be the norm with commercial recordings. A big thank you for including this in your playlist!

It's
great to hear a new song from you Peter and this is suberb!
Great vocals and lyrics, a wonderful sound from all the instruments. Love the arrangement and the guitars sound great when they come in.

Very much enjoyed this!

Peter Bauckham said 108 days ago
It's been far too long...
since I wrote anything. Some what late for the Summer of Love challenge. I had the backing done so I could practice singing along in the car - I find that works really well (if I can remember the lyrics)! I backed off the compression throughout the recording (except on the vocals where it was essential). I'm pleased with the overall sound on this one.

lengold said 109 days ago
Where did it all go wrong?
Love the guitars on this Peter - very well played and recorded. Lovely song and vocals too. Great idea for a song.
Cheers
Len

Peter Bauckham said 108 days ago
Wish I knew the answer Len...
Thanks for your comments on the production - I was pleased with how the mix went - the mastering took a while. I recorded the vocals with my AKG condenser mic rather the the Shure dynamic I normally use as I couldn't get the sound I wanted with it - spent an age trying to find a mic setting I liked - it all took far too long really.

and I bought sgt pepper that summer. a turning year for me.

great tune Peter. everything sounds groovy and very well defined in the mix.

summers seem to be way to short, who do we talk to about that?

Peter Bauckham said 108 days ago
Summer here
has been a wash out here this year (again)! Funny you should mention Sgt. Pepper as it nearly got a name check in the lyric - I opted for Scott McKenzie. Not my favourite Beatles album though but very influential.

Enjoyed
this, like the singin and the way the lyrics flow.
The whole thing was enjoyable!

Like how you accomplished the looking back feel of this!

Way To Go!

1967 wow, you hit the nail of the head with that number too!

I talked with a lady at our church who had a boutique and sold clothes to Jimi Hendrix :)

Hendrix...
I remember when he died writing a news piece in my school book (I was 8) - I was hooked on music from an early age. Glad you enjoyed this - I love your latest - the guitar work is amazing.

Such a happy tune
Good stuff.

Maybe it still needs a tambourine and an electric sitar? Oh wait, there is a tambourine. Ok, just the electric sitar then.

And be sure to wear flowers in your hair :-)

Peter Bauckham said 108 days ago
Now there's a thought...
A sitar would be rather good - I knew there was a reason why I needed to get World Jam Pack... Thanks for listening and watch out for the 'Ravi Shankar Mix'

man ... you just sound so ... well English!! :-] You know I love your voice and this tune rocks. Think i shall put this in my itunes playlist for Al Stewart and see whot happens! Peter ... great tune ... thanks!

Peter Bauckham said 108 days ago
Well...
as it's 2008 my next song should be 'Year of the Rat'... nice to be in your playlist - and in good company too. Thanks as always for your kind words.

Ahhhh! taking me back..
Yes, please take me back to that time. What great summers they were and great music and fashion too in contrast to now. You covered it all very well here and a great recording/performance too.... great clarity, cheers M

summer of love
great song. would love to hear some 'ooooooooweeeeooooo' beach boys bg vox in there somewhere. I like the guitars in the chorus. nice job!

Peter Bauckham said 108 days ago
Thanks...
glad you enjoyed it - some backing harmonies would have been nice but I really needed to get this finished - my output has been seriously lacking lately. Good to hear from you.

Sweet
This is very cool. I love the sound - the guitar is lovely, great sound and lovely rhythmic playing. I like the chord sequence and the instrumentation overall is very effective. Bass could be turned up a notch to my ears, but that's just a nit - the mix is excellent, and it sounds great. I like the lyrics, with their nice bittersweet tone, and the imagery in the lyrics is excellent. A terrific song - perfect for summer! Nicely done, my friend. Peace.

Peter Bauckham said 107 days ago
Thanks...
for your critique - always great to hear from you. I suspect the bass guitar is a little low in the mix as I'm not that confident playing it - although the bass seems to go down nice and low on my test system - always hard to judge these things. So nice to be back writing and recording. I must do a volume two CD of your songs - I also really think you should re-record your 'Hurricane' song - still one of my MJ favourites - a lost classic!

Nice
Easy on the ears, charming vocal delivery, I also hear Al Stewart in this. Good stuff.

Peter Bauckham said 106 days ago
Thank you
I've been listening to Al Stewart for years so and I guess he is one of my biggest influences - as Jack always seems to notice. Glad you enjoyed it.

i always love your songs, so brit pop (in the old school fashion). this could be a lost House of Love track. your voice is outstanding, really love the sound of it. great track.

Peter Bauckham said 106 days ago
House of Love...
I used to listen to them a lot - I was quite in to the brit pop thing in the 90s. Thanks for the compliment on my singing - it's always hard to listen to yourself and be objective.

Sorry I found this late,

It is part of your charm. Thanks.

Crispy
Peter, you are amazing. This sounds fantastic. I love that guitar chinkachinka sound and the bass and those keys work perfectly together. Your vocals are among your best.

Great song for the end of a brutal summer.

Hmmmm...
...I was there...

We could spend quite a bit of time discussing what went wrong...couldn't we?

I guess it's a big, big world...

Still see beauty and I'm sure you do, too. Can't let the loud negative voices get us down for too long.

Nice tune, Peter. Thanks.
