Had to google
hulusi - that doesn't look very easy to master, but you seem to have done (very well).
As Feter says... meditative. Beautiful composition and nice to hear something so different.
Cheers
Len

Plaintive
A plaintive quality for sure, as you suggest. I particularly like the places where you bend notes; they convey an even more powerful quality to me, maybe like a cry for help... no, that's not quite it... anyway, I like it all, particularly those spots. I take it the hulusi is rather like a recorder?

Hulusi
It's a reed instrument, but the reed is internal. There are two sounding pipes, one drone and one melody, that each have a reed. The reeds are hidden inside a gourd which has the mouthpiece. So you build up the pressure inside the gourd to get those reeds to sound. It's a very sweet instrument.

Perfect stage for the
what was that instrument again?

I love the stage you set up for it. Perfect combo of the "pipe" and the syths.

i must be tripping...
This is a very provocative track; the relentless drone reminded me somewhat of shamanistic drumming. After I got past the initial irritation of the constant sound, it started to transport me to another dimension.

But then it ended.

I wonder what it would be like if you went off in another musical direction after this section? Great stuff. Like a journey.

hulusi
Very haunting, but gorgeous. I'm unfamiliar with the hulusi and read your description of it with interest. I really love the sound of the instrument - along with all the atmospheric sounds you've added. I agree with Cameron, definitely had the effect of a sort of meditational droning - transporting me into another space of mind. Could have gone on for much longer. Thanks for sharing this.

vic - this is incredible! what gorgeous, sad, droning tones - just mesmerizing. this is really good work!

Rocha Malhada said 116 days ago
nice
Is all of this the chinese hulusi? The drone is quite strong, if that's what I'm hearing alone, almost a synthy sound in it.

How do you mic this?

really cool, thanks

hulusi
The hulusi has one melody pipe and a drone pipe that can stop with your left pinky, a finger that usually goes unused in wind instruments. I start with playing just the melody pipe, then the drone is added, and it ends with only the melody.

The synths are Zebra. I'll add that in the description. I didn't want to suggest that everything was a real instrument.

This is haunting
A very evocative, entrancing sound, and a very interesting instrument. Nicely done, playing that! I have to say, I'm with Cameron as far as wondering what this might be like if it turned into something else. Not a criticism, but this feels to me like a killer intro to something. Great sound and production. Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.

Really
beautiful and interesting music.I never know what to expect from you which is great!

BossHook said 115 days ago
A very
intense backscape for the instrument. Are we moving down the river toward the mouth? Should I hold my breath? These are the feelings I get with this. Great drones on the instrument.

interesting
I'd take more of the same, It's an elongegated movement that transcends.
thaks.

i am
very impressed by this piece. i love the hulusi, i'll have to do a little reed-ing about that one. sorry couldn't resist. excellent, nothing to say in the way of constructive criticism.

the dawn of pipes
great playing on that hulusi. never heard of it before but it's pretty cool.

I like the droning with the synths as well. it has a bit of a P.F. Wish You Were Here vibe to it. It could of easily slipped into the instrumental section of that album.

i was thinking about an eagle soaring on the thermals...

thanks

Compelling
Strangely intriguing and - sad - maybe, but moving forward. It's not an indulgent, passive sadness, the energy is almost tangible. Very interesting piece. Listened to it many times and really enjoy the intensity of it. Hope you will do more with these instruments. I like the contrasting qualities of the 'flutes' - both simple and ethereal as well as strong and uncompromising in their expression.

Hey! Excellent!
Wow Victor. This is my first exposure to the hulusi. I'm impressed and intrigued. How did you chance upon one?

This tune is hypnotic. It's like meditating outdoors at sunrise. Near the end it gets very lonesome sounding...KUDOS!

Be well!

BTW: I still love ya Victor!

hulusi
Michael,

I have the attention span of a gnat with ADD. If I see something new I abandon what I'm doing, and start exploring it. Someone just happened to mention the hulusi on another forum, so I looked it up, found that they sounded cool and were not terribly expensive, so the next week I had one in house....

New toys! New toys! That's the name of the game.

Love you too :-)

Very good
I like the build up, and the use of real instrument and synth certainly creates a great vibe and cool textures.
Nice work Vic, the track (as everyone says) is meditative and introspective. Cool.

Very Well Played . . .
The hulusi sounds like a difficult instrument to play, but you have executed this piece very well.

The overall feel and dynamic of the music is haunting and spiritual.

Thanks for posting this one. It is very good, indeed.
