Description I wrote this song about overcoming writer's block and getting thru performance anxiety....and wouldn't you know it....I end up getting creatively blocked during the process.

I am Bass Blocked. I have no Bass Guitar at home and, furthermore, I keep trying to "hear" a Bass line for this song and I just can't get it. I hear nothing. I tried tuning my acoustic down an octave from low E to simulate a Bass sound, but ohhh did that soooo not work. And in my quest to "hear" Bass, I ended up blocking myself again....on the lyrics....though I do have some ideas about what I want to express with words, I just want to hear this song with some Bass Guitar it to inspire the expressional lyrical flow.

I need help. I am asking you, my fellow MacJammers, to please help me out with this song! I really, really, really like this song a whole lot and I just don't want it to end up Bassless. So if we can work this out, then please let me know so we can work it out!
Lyrics ©2008 Phil Sexton

There are lyrics to this song, but they are so far, incomplete.....that writer's block thing again. Anyway, the following is the basis of this song:

Song starts with character talking to himself about his writer’s block. He has been having a difficult time at trying to write a song and he is trying to motivate himself by talking about getting his engines of creativity started (thus the Car Engine sounds). He comes across some words of advice and reads them out loud to himself.

(Spoken Intro)
Keep your mind wide open.
And those ideas flowing.
Never mind the direction that its going.
Just get it all down.
Don’t interrupt the flow.
Be ready to deliver steady just like rock and roll.

(Verse 1)
I think I got the blues
Please Tell me How’d this happened
Can’t seem to find my groove
Might as well start nappin.
But my mind’s in a cage
Can’t find the words to explain
Frustration turns into rage
Something’s blocked in my brain.

(Chorus)
Keep your mind wide open.
And those ideas flowing.
Never mind the direction that you find it going.
Just get it all down.
Don’t interrupt this flow.
Be ready to deliver steady just like rock and roll.

(Pre-Verse Bass Guitar Solo???)

He likes the advice but he wonders aloud to himself about how to apply this advice to his stage fright.

(Verse 2)
Its time to hit the stage
Standing bright in that spotlight
My hands don’t want to play
My head just does not feel right
Feeling weak in the knees
Butterflies in my chest
I think that I’m gonna freeze
From all of this rising stress

(Chorus)
Keep your mind wide open.
And those ideas flowing.
Never mind the direction that you find it going.
Just get it all down.
Don’t interrupt this flow.
Be ready to deliver steady just like rock and roll.

(Bridge)
Oh yeah
I think I got this
Okay
I can do this

(Missing Bridge Verse)

(Guitar Solo 1)

(Chorus)
Keep your mind wide open.
And those ideas flowing.
Never mind the direction that you find it going.
Just get it all down.
Don’t interrupt the flow.
Be ready to deliver steady like a rock and roll.

(Bridge 2)
(Unwritten Bridge Verse 2)

(Guitar Solo 2)

(Refrain)

Software: GarageBand 3

Wow dude
Kick/ass are the two words that come to mind when I hear this. I wish I knew how to play bass. I would try to rip it. I only do cuts and flows (hmmm...).

Cuts and Flows...Hmmmmm
Spit....you might be on to something. We need to re-visit this idea. Hmmmm.

This is
excellent, I just love the sound of your guitar and this is a great tune.
Downloaded and now I'm going to plug my Fender Precision in to see if I can help!

Great stuff Phil, love it!

Precise Precision..
That's what's needed Bob!! Some Precise Precision Bass!! I'm getting excited knowing that somewhere on the other side of the internet, Bob Rodgers is bumping out some Bass ideas. I only wish that I could watch the creative process unfold.

Thanks Bob!! I'll be watching out for whatever it is you ending up settling on!!

Thanks for downloading and trying Ummm on!

Bass Blocked
Great track from start to finish. This is more than most bass players could ask for as far as laying something down goes. I'm sure you'll have several offers and then Look Out! You get to put some vocals down!

I can't wait to hear this finished!

Thanks Five Extra Arms
I can't wait to hear what this song will eventually evolve into. This is really fun!

wurzel said 119 days ago
Awesome
I hear bass lines, just wish I could play well enough to help out with this.
I'll watch this song's evolution with interest. Good luck!

psexnyc said 118 days ago
Thanks Wurzel!!
I definitely need the luck. I still got to finish writing the lyrics and then get my voice ready for singing. Definitely gonna need luck with that!

Hendrix Style, Ehh?
That's a very interesting thought. A Hendrix style vocal. I gotta go thru my .mp3s and listen to the various types of songs Hendrix sings. There could very well be a style that I can intimate (as opposed to imitate). You wouldn't happen to have a song already in mind would you?

great track
I love it... Someday we have to collab... Great guitar...

psexnyc said 118 days ago
"Someday" Craft?
We need to turn that "someday" to "soon". This song will be my first collab here at MJ. Once I get a handle on the best way to mix, compress, upload and share a Garage Band file or an .mp3 file, I will be ready to do this more often.

You got a project in mind?

Absolutely
love the production on this. The car start works fantastically. Really looking forward to hearing the end result.
Cheers
Len

psexnyc said 118 days ago
Thanks Len!
I almost took the car start engine out. My said that the sound annoyed her. I actually did take it out and listened the song, but it sounded like something was missing. So I put it back in. Now when I play the song at home, I make sure to wear my headphones so I don't annoy her anymore.

I am really looking forward to hear this song with some Bass in it. That's the missing element.

RazorsKiss said 118 days ago

Do I Want More Than Bass?
Well Allen, if you don't already know, you are one of my most favorite MJers. I've been a fan of yours since the Pick Quick Records days. Not only do I admire your amazing guitar ability, your soaring voice and your dedication to your craft...but your production techniques are simply killer. I marvel over the quality of the sound you get from your mixes. Do I want more than just Bass on this song?

With Blind Faith, I present this song to your ears and whatever time and energy you would like to put towards what your imagination conjures up, I will be ready to receive! Seriously, I would love to hear your ideas on how to allow this song to grow into whatever it is going to grow into!

egobandit said 118 days ago
how can you
not like this If Jimi were alive this is what he might sound like ! ouT standing riffs... I play bass I could give it a wirl There are better bass players out there than me let me know

psexnyc said 118 days ago
Whoa...Jimi Sound Like This?
I have often wondered what Jimi would be sounding like if he were still with us. But there is no way my playing is anywhere near his level of guitar mastery. But if he had a song like this one in his repertoire, I most definitely would be trying to copy it's style...guitar crunch after guitar crunch!

Thanks EgoBandit!!

About The Bass
And if you wanna throw down on some Bass for this song, I am not going to say "no". Bring It!! Bang It!!

dajama said 118 days ago
This is very cool
A great, rockin' track. The drums and guitar are really crystal clear and sweet. I could try some bass on this, but my bass work is ham-fisted at the best of times! But there is plenty of room for something really nice here, and i know someone with more ability is going to come up with something perfect. Can't wait to hear what comes out. very cool. Peace.

psexnyc said 118 days ago
Thanks Dajama
Hey, don't let Ham Fists, Bacon Fingers and Pork Chop Picks stop the Bass!! Like you said, there's room for it!

Ibstrat said 118 days ago

Amazing!

It is immensely singable.
I couldn't help myself. It will be great. Thanks.

Nice
The tune has some great potential, especially with the good tone you are achieving. I think the song could be developed structurally though. For example, a key change or even a chord change would add much to the song structure in the early phase of the tune and then would help reduce the length/repetition. A bass line would be fairly easy to compose over this tune in my humble opinion.

psexnyc said 108 days ago
Thanks Drew!!!
When I was crafting this song, I did consider a key change, but I thought the change would sound predictable....same thing too with making a chord change, so I just added a long guitar refrain. Plus, when I was writing the words to this song, I realized that anything other than the key of E would have had me singing out of my range...and I think I tuned the guitar down a half step to make sure my voice would be comfortable.

I really like this song and am interested in growing it into something spectacular, so I am definitely open to your suggestions!

And have you heard the bass lines?? I got a couple of them posted on my profile page. announcer has one on his profile page
and VicDiesel has another one on his profile page.

Check them out!!
