Keywords this maybe should have been put in the genre called Symphonic Psych (1)
Description I got Logic Express yesterday as a gift from a friend. I played on her last record and she knew I wanted it, so she hooked me up. This is my first experiment, and there is definitely a learning curve from Garageband (which feels like a 4 track in comparison).

This song is hard to describe, i used a lot of the orchestral stuff and the vox are way raggedy on purpose. It's about someone who pisses me off, but since I'm beyond "hatred" I wrote a song instead. It's no secret that Spiritualized and the Flaming Lips are huge influences, so it is what it is. Might take a while to get used to LE8 (and I was just starting to get decent recordings on GB - what a chump I am). Hope you like
Lyrics you broke my heart
and tried to be my friend
I never ever
want to talk to you again

and I'll be slowly backing away
i'll be sad
when you're dead
i'll be sad
when you're dead

i saw you yesterday
i had to hide my face
i just don't feel the need
to share this world with you

and I'll be slowly backing away
i'll be sad
when you're dead
i'll be sad
when you're dead

please walk away
don't turn back
go somewhere far away
please leave me
to myself
go somewhere far away

and I'll be slowly backing away
I'll be slowly backing away
i'll be sad
when you're dead
i'll be sad
when you're dead
i'll be sad
when you're dead
i'll be sad

wow man
this is great. lots of influences coming through in this but all michael marquesen. cool lyrics. really like the contrast of the subject matter with the waltzy melancholic music. awesome orchestration. really like this one.
you're brave to foray into Logic. I'm so intimidated by that program.

my motto in life is: how hard can it be?
thanks a bunch for checking this out, really glad you liked it. the vox are a little rough lots of ss'es popping and I can't figure out why. I used a pop filter and i tried to EQ out the spots where it was doing that. oh well, the whole thing is a learning process.

Char said 120 days ago
It can only get better.
Such a contrast between the sweet music and the somewhat covert meaning behind your lyrics. I don't know... if there is a way to think of someone as dead to you before they actually take their last breath, it would be much easier to bury your ache, your desire for the expectation you had. Death makes things final and provides the ultimate closure. I got involved in your song and it made me think. Thank you.

michael2 said 120 days ago
thanks
so much Char. makes me really happy that you got into this one. i had a lot of fun recording it and blowing off some steam. thanks again for your comment.

I forget but does LE come with the Deesser plugin? I know it's in Pro. If it does, use that and it really does work marvels. The reason why you might notice them more is if you are recording in 24 bit you might have more range in the recording than you would notice in Garageband. Logic does handle the audio differently internally, I believe, though I don't have any real concrete explanation as to how or why. You'll notice that things sound livelier in Logic and some things are a little more hyped at both ends of the spectrum. Just my opinion. You just have to adapt a little bit.

Super song, by the way. I actually don't hear any real problems with it. That doesn't sound like midi jazz drums, the way the kick drum booms. Reminds me of Randy Newman in one of his more pastoral moods.

michael2 said 120 days ago
thanks jim
i messed about a bit with the de-esser, but i think i need to read the manual first. was afraid I might make it worse. thanks for the props on the song. actually on a couple of spots, there is a bass drum from jampack 4 mixed in, so it sounds bigger. the drums at the beginning and the end are distorted and heavily processed, so they just sound like noise. thanks for listening.

Jim Bouchard said 120 days ago
my motto in life is: how hard can it be?
you said it not me. BTW, you won't find much info on how to use the Deesser in the manual, just use the presets, listen to how it sounds, turn the knobs a bit and boom, you're done.

I'll Be Sad
This is so sad ...then its so honest ..I feel this
too classic..my ears said this is so well written
and structured..you vocal so true here ...the drums
sound so good and alive ...thnx alot for sharin !!!!

Feter
thanks so much my friend. i try to keep the music honest, glad it comes across for you. thanks for listening.

Diviner said 120 days ago
Sad however very nice track
I like all the elements that make up the track, its well composed and yes I can hear your influences however you have certainly made an interesting and original track. Very nice.

michael2 said 119 days ago
thanks Diviner
always respect your opinions. glad you like, after i get the hang of this program we have to get together on something.

Diviner said 118 days ago
Cool, I look forward to it
and cannot wait, goodness only knows how the music will turn.

there are many notes to discover....
really good piece of music

michael2 said 119 days ago
thanks so much
glad to hear that you enjoyed. thought it may be a little indulgent for most people, so it's a pleasant surprise that people like. thanks for listening.

time passes. a funny thing how it works
roll up for the magical mystery lip. or somewhere between.

the choice of synth's was great. almost a like mellotron sound.

michael2 said 119 days ago
thanks Vic
the mellotron-ey sound was actually the standard GB pop flute with nothing but reverb. i actually really dig that sound. thanks for listening.

MarkHolbrook said 119 days ago
Hey Micheal
Congrats on Logic...

It really isn't as bad as it appears... I can help a little if you need hint. I'm no pro but I switched to logic express then pro a while back and I'm now much more comfortable in those than in GB.

This is of course nice and for some one new to the program you seemed to master getting this one together pretty quickly! Nice!

michael2 said 119 days ago
thanks Mark
so far it seems pretty manageable, can't say the same for LOgic Pro 7 . was trying to do something on my friends kit and it was totally overwhelming me. this version seems laid out much better. at this point, i'm just scratching the surface, haven't tried out anything interesting yet. basically did the same things I would have done on GB (although the automation is a little more complex). i may take you up on your offer.

LunaTrick said 119 days ago
Deffo Flaming Lips vibe..
Big Star and Robyn Hitchcock too! And your voice gets better every time I hear it. I really like this tune a lot!

ledebutant said 119 days ago
Spot De-essing
I'm so excited to think of you with all the toys in Logic. I saw Jim mentioned the De-esser. I used to have a lot of trouble and before I decided to say, "oh, screw it," I used to have success with using automation to dip the volume at the essiest moment. I always got the best results that way, but it was a pain in the esss, and doesn't really seem to mesh with how you work. Not to mention that I was listening to the song and enjoying it and didn't really notice any essiness.

I really, really love this song. The hook is terrific. As other people have said, I can hear tons of influences. I hear Robyn Hitchcock, too. The drums at the the end remind me of I Am the Walrus.

I had the urge to wave my hands over my head while listening and will do so in the future when I am alone with my iPod.

Thanks, Michael. More great free music!

GB
So, let me get this straight: You did all that other stuff on GarageBand?????

Oh man, we are so screwed now. Michael2 is going to rule the musical world and out-do us all!

BTW, Nice cut. Lovely orchestration....

Cool Beatlesque
Production. The sound quality is very good. It'll be interesting to hear what you come up with in this program, oh and the song is great but that is always expected from you.

biba_nova said 119 days ago
To me
this sounds like a hybrid song that could have come from sunflower and here come the warm jets (think on some faraway beach or some of them are old)

welcome to the wonderful world of logic audio...i have been living in it since the days it was called c-lab creator and ran on an atari ste. The new world of logic 8 is so much more intuative to use, i am sure you will enjoy the magic

let me know if i can ever help you with any tips or advice

Michael2 logic
I think that's typical that using a programm to sound much clerar, you start by putting a lot of noise on the drums (as a farewell to GB?). You're not only a gifted musician but also prone to experiment, which is great.

btw, Do you feel making sings in Logic 8 takes more time as you have more options (and tricks to learn?)

Ibstrat said 119 days ago

great song. I love that ominous drawn out ending.

Right after the intro, may be one of the best things I've heard on this site.
Extremely original and creative. And well delivered vocals.

Man, you're good.

michael - you're just amazing. I got LE for Xmas, loaded it, messed with it for like, 30 minutes, broke out in hives, haven't gone back. So for starters, I'm very impressed that you did all this on your first try. And then secondly, this is a GREAT song (as usual)

guitapick said 119 days ago
Yes...
...I definitely "like" this...great tune. Your lyrics always blow me away, too. Wonderful work, man. If this is an "experiment" with LE8, then I'm very much looking forward to hearing when you've got it down.

Awesome 1st Piece
with Logic . I have Logic 7, but I never learned to use it well, so I go back to GB all the time. The song itself is excellent. I love the lyrics - I know just what you mean! The music is perfect with it, too. I didn't notice any sss sounds - but I'm listening on powerbook speakers.

apb said 119 days ago
Great song

fabulous feel and instrumentation. I'm partial to the lo-fi kinda sound (are the bass drums, snare and odd floor tom supposed to be clipping/distorted a little? - that might be adding to the general sizzle) .. doesn't matter - I think it's a great song .. and mix wise I'd keep the gritty low-fi bed sound but try to 'polish up' the vocal tracks- really for three reasons: 1- you have a great voice 2- a sweet polished vocal would contrast the lo-fi bed well I think and 3- er .. you have a great voice!

I have Logic Pro 7.. but seldom have the inclination to use it... now that's a chump!! lol.

davisamerica said 118 days ago
wow ...
ummmm ... michael ... can you hook me up with that person who "pisses" you off .... they kicked out a darn good track from you .... couldn't hurt ehh? : -] seriously ... very nice man ...

dajama said 118 days ago
Great song
I like this a lot. The lyrics are direct and elegant in their directness, and your vocal is really nice. The orchestral backing is effective, I think, and the drums work really well. Good luck with Logic. I find it all a bit scary! Nice one. Peace.

Lennon714 said 118 days ago
wow
So much for a learning curve. Love that chord progression.

Pete_NB said 118 days ago
Singing
Your singing sounds so effortless and in the pocket. Especially impressive with the slow tempo of this song.

And thanks (or not!) for inspiring me to give LE8 a shot.

12parsecs said 118 days ago

this is awesome! the recording sounds great. fun orchestral instrument choices and brilliant major/minor conflicts by the strings. like the lyrics too. nothing like some exciting new software to get the creative juices flowing.

song and performance Michael. Lovely production too.

Yu know ....
.. I had issues with an "Sssss" sound once on one my songs ... then after my Dentist FILED my teeth down ... that sound disappeared ... hahahaha oh wait .... that was that darned old BAD Fitting Bridge I am talking about .... (the bridge work is better - the song still has the original LITHSP sound in it) hahaha .... don't file your teeth .... song sounds great the way it is ... (to me ... it was a cross between Beatles and Vic Holman sound .. ) Interesting how everyone will hear a little something different huh ....

rsorensen said 117 days ago

for another listen and download. love the orchestra stuff in this one, man. what's the deal with that stuff? do you play it on your keyboard or are they samples? i need to get into that stuff. really like what you did with the drums at the end too

jiguma said 117 days ago
You won't look back Michael
Logic is far superior to GB in many ways - 8 opens up all sorts of alternatives. "Livelier" is the word for sure. It sounds like you're about to take a giant leap forward - watch out for that wall though :)

I'm not crazy about that kick drum that sounds like its clipping - there are some great sounds in the "Studio Tight" kit in the "Acoustic Drums" channel strip preset.

Excellent song - LE8 is a real addition to your arsenal.

Cheers,
Neil

Beautiful Michael
the virgin birth from LE - such a fine tune as usual and there's so much emotion and tempered touches here. Wonderful. It's like lo-fi orch.

from the moment
I read the title I knew I liked this tune.
Sweet and twisted - just the way I like it.
This song is genius!
Blue Velvet and Robyn Hitchcock come to mind for some reason.

From listening to this
I have the feeling that it wont take long for you to master Logic. It is surely a very good start regarding program usage and the song itself is awesome.
I dont think the instrumentation constrasts with the lyric subject. In my opinion, it complements it.
I would really like to hear the strings at the intro with no drums at all.I think it would would sound much more dramatic. But thats just me and my drumsless wishes.
This is very good, Michael.

This is a very impression first dabble with Logic.
Such beautiful song.
The drums sound awesome.
The orchestration is brilliant.
I'm really glad you hang around here.

Wow
This is one of those songs I want to fave twice!

What a beautiful composition and gorgeous performance.

It's one thing to lick your wounds with a song, but quite another when that song heals those who listen. I feel better somehow, too. So thank you!

Makes me want to get in there and crank a song. If only I could do that as well as you do.

Hell of a start on Logic
The stuff you will be coming up with now will be frighteningly good - add that to your already brilliant stuff and....well maybe a new genre is in order: ubermenchen music.
