Description In loving memory.

A little tribute to a largely unknown singer from Chicago in the 1920's and 30's, Miss Lil Johnson. Very little is known of her other than she made some great 78's. We don't know her date of birth or when she died and she left no photo either. Her pianist in later years was Bob Hudson but she also worked with Montana Taylor and Charles Avery, two other great players. I am lucky enough to have copies of everything known that she ever recorded.
Lyrics
Oh, Miss Johnson 2008

Forty four bottles standing in a line,
Some of them whiskey and some of them wine.
Oh Miss Johnson –let’s get drunk and truck.

Drinking your liquor ‘till you can’t see straight,
Hold on steady don’t you make me wait.
Oh Miss Johnson – let’s get drunk and truck.

Dressed in sweet tobacco brown you look so pretty,
I never see you ‘round in town it’s such a pity.

I can’t deny it, you make me shake,
I start to wobble gotta have my cake,
Oh, Miss Johnson let’s get drunk and truck.

Break – 2 X 8 bars

I lose control when you start to groove,
I wait my chance and I make my move,
Oh, Miss Johnson let’s get drunk and truck.

I love your circles and they turn me on,
I’m telling you honey that I can’t wait long,
Oh, Miss Johnson let’s get drunk and truck

Dressed in sweet tobacco brown you look so pretty,
I never see you ‘round in town it’s such a pity.

Your big brown eyes and smokey breath,
Your lovin’ scares me half to death
Oh, Miss Johnson let’s get drunk and truck

thanx Feter
the song is partly mine but I did use the phrase -Let's get drunk and truck - which is the title of one of Lil's best known records. I just couldn't come up with anything more powerful than that, so I'm not going to lay claim to this one.

Impossible to
keep still listening to this. This is just superb, really infectious - wish I was in a smoke filled pub listening to and singing along with it.
Excellent musicianship, vocals and great recording too - all very clear.
Love it.
Cheers
Len

Thank you Len-
If you ever get the chance to watch the film -Colour Purple - set in the 20/30's you'll se a scene in it where a girl singer performs the old Speckled Red song - The Dirty Dozen , and after seeing it I said much the same as you - if pubs had artists like that in them I'd be in there every night. I don't think you'll find many filled with smoke though any more ! It's called Hokum music.

yes Dick-
I know what you mean ! this lady made some very rude records, but the Queen of them all was without a shadow of a doubt a gal called Lucielle Bogan. Same era same town.
Wow -

John, ps. thanks for your comments.

Oh this is cool.
Got me from the first 4 man. Love the old time Jazz club sound of this. Wish you had posted the lyrics for us old timers, we're getting a bit deaf.

Nice mix, good instrumentation, authentic old Jazz style. Yeah this is a keeper my friend. My iPod thanks you and so do I.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

Ah- thank you Ed-
glad you enjoyed it, I shall post up the lyrics shortly, but I only recorded and completed the song yesterday so I haven't had much time to do it, my typing is a lot slower than my piano playing I'm afraid.

I absolutely adore the "speakeasy" feel of this!! Vocals are perfect. Instant fave.

I always know I am in for a treat
Though I don't drink :) You have an unbelievable sense of boogie.

Plus Woof, you put a nice smile on my face.

I mean when I hear you play you sound so pro. High level stuff indeed!

Man can you tickle those ivories, I am surprised they don't giggle when you touch em. That is so good you are. Plus the vocal is classic, Winchester Cathedral which I love as well.

Got to go to work now Woof, but thanks for letting me leave on a fun boogie sound bar none!

WAY TO GO

Thank you Bill
Really good to hear from you and thanks for listening. I have a lot of great old records with stuff like this on them which mostly feature guitar/piano duets. There is so much life in them I always think.

Your comments are always welcome, thanks, muchly indeed,

Best wishes,

John

Hey woofer
I haven't been here lately and can't tell you why.

Anyway, another great song. Nicely recorded too.

Well done, John
