Description I asked Char, one of our newer members, to send me a vocal of her poem - The Awe Full Truth - and was thrilled when she did so. She is somewhat shy about her singing - but as you can hear - has a lovely singing voice. This was a rough vocal done on a built-in computer mic - but something about the tone is very appealing - and I didn't have to do much other than add some reverb. In accompaniment, I tried to build drones and slight contrapuntal rhythms around it - with a sad cello in the lower register. If you like it, please be sure to encourage Char and perhaps we'll get to hear more of her unique voice on MJ.
Lyrics Awe-ful Truth (Lyrics by Char)

What can I say about this world
And all the hurting people in it?
At break neck speed we're often hurled
And can lose ourselves in a minute.
Oh yeah, and can lose ourselves in a minute.

To pass on by the needy ones
Requires our justification.
Inhumanity often stuns
Beyond all appreciation.

I think we are all scared to death.
So we withhold our understanding.
We are frightened with every breath,
That we' re the ones needing mending.

Don't you see and won't you believe,
Everyone is somehat broken,
(Has)Lost capacity to receive
And from dark dreams un-awoken.

What can I say about this world
And all the hurting people in it?
At break neck speed we're often hurled
And can lose ourselves in a minute.
Oh yeah, and can lose ourselves in a minute.

Char said 122 days ago
Tack Skean.
Du är väldigt söt. Hur nådig du är.

lavalamp said 123 days ago
Inventive indeed
Although not, this has a Native American vibe to it. Luna, this is very creative of you.

Excellently written po-em, Char

Dave

LunaTrick said 122 days ago
Hmmm
Hadn't made the native American connection - but now that you say...

Char said 122 days ago
My thanks.
Yes, I can hear the mournfulness. I will try to do better in order to be worthy of such a gentle but powerful musical treatment.

wow you guys - wonderful collab here. Char - it's so GREAT to hear your voice!!! This has a cool chant-y quality - daniel you're just a genius in the way you've put this together to bring the most out of Char's words/voice. Keep it up you two!

LunaTrick said 122 days ago
Thanks Karen...
..and for not pointing out that it's not metronomically perfect!!!

Char said 122 days ago
Thanks, Karen.
Luna deserves the praise. I can hardly believe that he went to all this trouble. Thanks.

Dj French Toast said 123 days ago
on a Tech note
I wish you had kept the ambiance sound of the vocal throughout ..this can be done by looping a small section of "dead air " so the vocal doesent disrupt the song every time that char takes a break or when you chopped it up . I really like her voice and I love the instruments you used ...cool song !

LunaTrick said 122 days ago
I thought about this DJ...
... thought I could get away with it... perhaps not.

I was looking for a clean drone between verses!

Char said 122 days ago
Thank you for listening, DJ.
I'm glad you two know what you're talking about. Thank you.

Char said 123 days ago
Awe-ful Truth
OMG, Luna, I just thought I was giving you something to play with. I wasn't singing well and I did only the one take. Your playing is moving, especially emotional. I am crying because of gratitude at hearing music from my words and melody more so than from embarassment. I could have sung a bit better but that was an honest first choice of a melody. You did me a great kindness. I never thought anyone would hear me. Heartfelt thanks.

LunaTrick said 122 days ago
It was a pleasure Char...
Your vocal had a lot of good qualities - and it was fun to work with. I just hope this encourages you to do more. You have a lot of supporters on MJ - Jack and Alannah for starters - and plenty of people will be after your sultry vocals after hearing this. No need to thank me - just keep singing...

stevel said 123 days ago
Very nice
Char has a great voice...look forward to hearing more of it in the future. The backing music is really well realised too
Cheers

Steve

stevel said 123 days ago
Portishead
..the vocals actually remind me of Beth Gibbons from Portishead. Lovely stuff
Steve

LunaTrick said 122 days ago
THAT'S IT!!!!!
Exactly what I was trying to say in the intro - only I couldn't think of exactly who it reminded me of.

Actually, Char would make a great Trip-hopper - as she has that Portishead/Massive Attack quality in her voice - sultry but with a slight touch of Billie Holiday. Hopefully, we'll hear more....

Char said 122 days ago
Thank you Stevel,
I appreciate the comparison. That is so nice. I love the music that Luna created and the feeling behind it.

yrp said 122 days ago
Excellent!
Congratulations, both of you!
What a great voice Char has!
And Luna Trick did a very intelligent arranging
around her voice. This is just great.

We appreciate your support and encouragement!

Char said 122 days ago
yrp,
Os meus agradecimentos, bem como
Você é muito amável.

Char
I think you (and Luna) have just proved something to yourself - you have a voice and you can sing As Steve said, a little bit Portishead.

Char, one of the things I discovered here at MJ when I first started was that you don't have to have a perfect voice to be able to sing. In fact, having a "regular" good voice can be less helpful in developing a style than having a voice that is different.

This track sounds to me like your singing is a little reticent, but I'm sure that as you do more of this, you'll find that you gain confidence and skill. One of the brilliant things about MJ is that there are often people like Luna who are more than happy to encourage and help out with musical stuff.

Welcome to MJ - this time as a performer.

Great to hear this.

Neil

LunaTrick said 122 days ago
Thanks...
Couldn't put it any better....

Char said 122 days ago
Thank you Neil
I thought the track I sent was just to get an idea of the melody. I didn't think it would be used. but, there it is, now. You are very sweet to encourage me to do more. Thank you.

bug67 said 122 days ago
Beautiful!
I'm so glad Char found a way to join in our fun! She has a lovely voice! I got kind of a cross between Anne Lennox and Stevie Nicks. Very nice guys.

Char said 122 days ago
Bug67,
That was so very flattering: Annie Lennox and Stevie Nicks... Oh my. I love both of them. :)

ic42 said 122 days ago
it is a dark dream
the music carries lyrics, as a river toward a waterfall of truth. the words are a painful revealed honesty. the singing is beautiful. it is perfect for the words. pretty, hollow sadness. the music is perfect as well. appropriate drone and sometimes dissonance. it creates tension and strong fixation on the word and song. i can lose myself in this in a minute. it is a joy to hear the voice of char. thank you lunatrick for the creation of this. 0x0

Char said 122 days ago
ic42, there is
no end to your depth which is measured but not quantified, approached but never revealed. I am happy that you enjoyed the beautiful emotion that Luna Trick put into this music.
Thank you from both of us.

Char's voice is great - and the lo-fi of the vocal recording seems to add something - very haunting. The production is excellent - loved it!

Peter

Char said 122 days ago
Thank You, Peter.
Luna picked the poem. He wove his classy strings around it.
Thank you for your kindness.

Moviz said 122 days ago
Love
the production on this and the haunting way you sing this with that great voice. The lyrics/poem by Char are very moving and with a lot of truth in them, love the blues feel you gave this with the way you sang, very atmospheric, regards M

Char said 122 days ago
Thank You, Maurice.
I appreciate your having a listen. I just sang the words one time and I sent it off to Luna who worked a miracle. I'm glad you don't think it a poor application of his great talent.
Thank you.

Char said 122 days ago
Thanks, Jack.
Luna is just sneakier, in a good way. That piece of music just had to come out. I was lucky enough to be in its path.

drakonis said 122 days ago
love it
Char's lyrics are open and blunt in some ways, but thought-provoking in others, and overall, important. Also, it is super to hear her sing, yay! OK, I got a sneak peek at her earlier singing and poked at her to post, but Daniel pulled it off, great work you two! And Daniel, your music does indeed create just the right kind of bed to hold but not drown out her singing. Yes, the "melody" is a little repetitive, but in some ways that works to its advantage. I found myself listening quite intently to this sparse work... nicely done!
ttfn,
Drakonis

Wink. You knew that I'd join in your fun one of these days.
I'm not going to hurry about. I still don't have proper equipment. It was nice to have a poem heard by so many people.
Luna Trick creates beautiful music. I am in awe.

Thank you Eduard,
Poor Luna "had his work cut out for him" in "making a silk purse out of sow's ear". I'm guessing Luna enjoys challenges. I didn't even think this was a song.
He did so much more than I could have imagined. I am grateful.
Thank you for your poking. :)

Well Now ....
.. I just got home and was pleasantly surprised to find this little gem waiting for me ... WOW you guys worked fast .... Char you sound fabulous ... Luna you definitely wove some great sounds around Chars Vocal ... Kudos to both of you ... and I too like the rest can't wait to hear more more more ......

Char said 122 days ago
Hey, Alannah,
I should have known. You two don't sit on your hands. Sorry about the deal. Blame the sneaky Cellist. I should wait until I have better equipment. I'm hopeful that I get some good advice. Like, "don't quit your day job." LOL! Love you!

Mystified said 122 days ago
Char, I echo...
....what Neil (jiguma) said, so SING, SING, SING! :)

Glad to hear your spreading your wings to fly....
Nice collab, you two!!

Char said 122 days ago
Thank you once again, Cat.
You are very kind. I can see how doing this is fun. With wonderful voices like you, there will always be beautiful music.

MissChaos said 122 days ago
absolutely gripping
Haunting and minimal. Love the stereo effects. Tiny nit pick: it seems to end too fast. A gripping piece like this deserves a bit longer fade-out because I just wanted to savor that cello a bit longer. I love this. Fab work, both of you!

Char said 122 days ago
Thank you.
More of Daniel's music is a good idea. Thank you for listening. :)

EEFliess said 122 days ago
wow!!!
see Char? you CAN do it.

this is very ethereal as well as haunting...reminds me of Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees take on the Beatles' "Dear Prudence"

Char said 122 days ago
Hi EDDIE!!!
Yikes! I've had the coming out party. I have no idea who Siouxsie Sioux is. I hope I can find that out. Argh! I didn't stand because I was just working a melody, or so, I thought.
Until I get something better to record with, I should probably lay off. Thanks for coming to listen. Luna's music is worth it. :)

CHAR at long last!!!
Wow...What a lovely collab! Dark...yet hopeful.

This is magic!

Excellent mix!

More please!

Be well!

PS: I almost used that same photograph for my newbie "Orphans..." (Whew! Close call!)

Char said 122 days ago
Thanks for dropping in.
Bet you were surprised. Well, I think what Luna Trick did was wonderful. And he did this so you would hear me. Hard to believe. Same photo, huh? Well it is a heart-rending photograph which speaks for all the hurting people. A good choice that captures attention and a good reminder. Thank you Micheal. :)

very compelling your voice. Interesting lyrics and a great collab enjoyed!

Char said 121 days ago
Tim, thank you so much
for taking the time to listen. I didn't know that this would be my first time singing here. Sometimes, we're thrust into things before we're ready. Luna trick's music wraps a vocal in a rich blanket, ...lucky me.

duhdewd said 121 days ago
Great work!
Wow! Char this is some great writing. And this is a wonderfully ambient soundbed for it. Great job Daniel, I really enjoy what you do.

Char said 121 days ago
Nice of you, Mike.
I will try to write better "songs." But, I doubt I'll ever have better music. Thanks for dropping by. :)

dajama said 121 days ago
Wow
Char, your voice sounds amazing on this - really heartfelt and soulful. I honestly think the nature of the recording through the pinhole mic gives this extra power. Wonderfully done. And LunaTrick, your instrumentation and arrangement on this is fantastic. I want more! Nicely done to you both. Kudos. Peace.

Char said 121 days ago
Thank you dajama,
So... I don't have to buy special equipment that I won't have a clue how to use? Yay! Luna Trick is an amazing talent. He did a very nice thing for me.

Cameron said 121 days ago
nice debut ;-)
Provocative words sung in an appropriate minimalist style.

The accompaniment is artful with the juxtaposition of cello and kalimba. The panning on those instruments was good, perhaps a bit wide for the vocal in the middle sound-field, whose level seemed slightly low. It made the "outer" instruments more present.

The melody was repetitive but that's probably the ambient style. I'd love to hear a bit more variety in your next songs; you have an excellent voice, clear as a bell. It's good to finally hear it!

Char said 121 days ago
Thank you, Cameron.
The repetitive melody was my fault. I haven't any idea what I'm doing. That's what I'll try to improve on. :)
I find no fault in what Luna Trick created. Thank you so much.

radiorebelde said 121 days ago
Who brought Billie Holliday??
Seriously! I love the fact that it's as heavy as it is but still has that kind of sultry jazz diva sound to it. It creates a really really cool dichotomy. I'm very impressed by the instrumentation as well as the great lyrical work! Brilliant stuff guys!

Char said 120 days ago
Thank you, radiorebelde.
Everyone has been very encouraging. I was worried that I'd disappoint. Until now, I didn't think anyone would care to hear me. This is nice to know. It is Luna Trick's music that I celebrate. Thank you.

Thank you shaving.
Never would have thought that poem was a song. :)

lengold said 119 days ago
What a truly
inspired collaboration. A lovely poem that was given wings. Char's voice reminds me of some of the great silky voices of the forties (not that I was around then). Would sound great harmonising. Well done Luna for making it happen so well. Congratulations on a great song to you both.
Cheers
Len

Char said 119 days ago
Thank you, Len,
I was around in the 40's, very late 40's. Silky is a very nice compliment. Luna Trick is a multi instru "mentalist" who just "knows" how to craft music. How many fingers am I holding up, Luna? Yep. That's right. High Five!

how did i miss
this? char's voice sounds great, and your instrumentation is perfect. i like the sound of the built in mic. a little noisy but works great with the track. once she gets a halway decent mic, she will be burning the place down. you guys sound perfect together. is that a real cello?

Char said 93 days ago
Thank you, Michael2.
So nice that you came to listen. Yes, that is a real cello: Luna Trick is a real Cellist. Thanks.

This sort of felt like a drug induced trance or something. Very creepy. That's what makes it good though. Also, if you are ever feeling down on your singing voice, just remember you're still better at it than I am.
