Keywords sewing machine (1)Jesus doll (1)
Description I was messing around with my dobro the other night and came up with the main riff for this song. I knew I'd forget it (I always do) so I went down right away and recorded a rough take of just the riff. The next night I spent some more time on the song, but couldn't record with complete silence behind me, so I recorded a scratch guitar and vocal part with my wife's sewing machine running in the background along with some other ambient 'life' sounds.
I had planned to re-record another cleaner version but thought it might be cool and maybe very organic to leave it as is, and maybe take the whole lo-fi concept it a little further and add some other stuff. I added a talking Jesus doll, a girl discussing the skills of breaking up, a dog barking (I couldn't get mine to), and some radio static.
The lyrics were improvised and intended as filler until I wrote something else, but strangly reading them now they make sense to me.
By the way, this and a few of my other previous posts - kind of blues, folk and country influenced indie rock songs - are part of a new project I'm working on I'm calling Blind Dog Sky. I think this will make a good intro or segue on the record.
Lyrics I don't believe you
When you tell me you're okay

and I am not believing
Every little word you say

When the wind is blowing on
You've got nowhere to run

Now that summer's almost over
The daylight will go on

This is...
something to behold Ridd, it escapes all adjectives, it is just plain GOOD. I think you're right about leaving it be, I believe you truly captured some magic in this. Sometimes thats how it happens. I also think the segue idea is brilliant. I have had a listen to the Blind Dog Sky songs at the webpage, and this would fit perfectly in the manner you envision. You always deliver man, I am happy you're here. Thanks for the free bee.
Peace
Guy

Excellent
I think this works perfectly as is. I've also recorded things roughly with background noise, and it just sounds like background noise! This sounds like it's supposed to be. I like the lyrics, too; improvised is sometimes the best. Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.

rsorensen said 121 days ago

thanks man. yeah the lyrics worked out well. stream of consciousness kinda thing, i was feeling meloncholic about the end of summer and this is what came out I guess. thanks again for listening

lavalamp said 123 days ago
Actually
this is quite charming as far as the production is concerned. The vox is super, but I think for this version it may have been better left naturally. It would sound like a dude floating down the Mississippi on a raft.
But, I still love this ditty. Good thing you ran off to record it in the nick of time. I totally know what you mean about forgetting those melodies and riffs.

Great job Ridd,

Dave

rsorensen said 121 days ago

thanks dave. i hear what you're saying and i did try that. it sounded alright but i wanted a dreamy kinda sound for the vox so went with this instead. thanks for listening and commenting and fanning (is that a word?)

Jim Bouchard said 123 days ago
love it!
The ambience is just perfect! Blind Dog Sky? Sounds like a good project. Cool all around.

rsorensen said 121 days ago

Thanks Jim! if you're into it I may call on you for more Blind Dog Sky assists. I'm thinking banjos and mandolins :)

O Jerusalem
Nice little kick-back. I love your dobro work (this and your coffee house instrumental blues tune). Very clean and effortless. Sometimes when people turn the distortion off you really them to turn it back on. Not here. The ambient soundbed works perfectly, too.

rsorensen said 121 days ago

thanks eric. it's nice to strip things down once in awhile (shutup). I think i'll be happily stuck in this phase for a few more songs.

Hey DOBRO!
Awesome guitar playing here Ridd. Just awesome...Nicely recorded as well!

I agree with Feter...Just a hint of the Rev Gary davis on that dobro.

Beautiful vocals and harmonies. What's not to like? Ha ha...

Be well friend!

rsorensen said 121 days ago

hey! what are you doing here ;) thanks micheal. i love my dobro. really. I even named it. Ok I've gotta check out this Reverend fella now. Have a good break!

Char said 122 days ago
Yes,
It is bluegrass, folk. Nice laid back tune. I kind of like the crackle noise. Short, but sweet. Thank you.

rsorensen said 121 days ago

yeah! bluegrass, folk, country, classic rock - that's the kind of sound this project's going for. glad you an hear it. thanks for stopping by, char.
