Description A fine songwriter friend from the other site, mfwmiles, wrote this song. When I first heard his original demo of the tune it struck me as such a unique but poignant piece of songwriting. The way he captured the heroic breaking of the color barrier in baseball by Jackie Robinson in my opinion is as fine a lyrical writing as some of the folk greats like Pete Seeger, Steve Goodman, John Pine.

So considering we have baseball nirvana here in Chicago right now with both sides of town hanging on to 1st place with fairytale dreams of an "L" train World Series, I finally finished my interpretation of the song that I had promised Miles I wanted to do.

Music and Lyrics: mfwmiles

John LaMantia: Acoustic and electric guitars, bass, vocals, piano, percussion, drum programming, production and mix.
Lyrics My name is Jackie Robinson, and baseball I did play
Some folks will remember me while others turned away
I suffered fools who told me lies,
But I will not apologize
I was never one to compromised The way I play the game
I was brave

They call me Jackie Robinson, I was a Brooklyn bum
But that’s not all they called me when then base-paths I did run
The hatred and intolerance,
The injustice and the violence
Answer them with silence and went about the game
And tried to be brave

Sometimes when the world got ugly out at second base
When I lost the nerve to keep on running, running in that race
It helped to have a friend at short stop, playing right beside me
He always would remind me
of the fire that burned inside me
and with his help I found the courage
And strength to carry on

The name is Jackie Robinson, I’m in the hall of fame
And if you go to Cooperstown, there’s a plaque that bares my name
Life is sweet but often hard
But that’s not on a baseball card
Just remember who you are It’s how you played the game

Coolness
A great Dylan and Springsteen vibe. Also, a bit Buffalo Springfield.

The instrumentation is excellent here.

Wow
what lyrics, plus the music really has a nice feel to it.

BH, can't say enough about how you can grab the listener with this. Especially people that love the game of baseball. And know about the baseball legend. I most do and should for sure.

What a SPECIAL tune!

Thanks much for sharing!

Excellent
The music and the story to this tune are both perfectly executed. Great tune. I was trying to come up with a tune about Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson and this does the job so much better. I may still try it, but this really tells the story well. Great job!
