Description I have been trying to learn the Tuva (outer Mongolia) style of Throat Singing ..... there is an interesting web site which describes the many different "styles" of Tuvan Throat Singing (http://www.khoomei.com/types.htm) .... I heard Didge-Ache's "Call to Prayer" originally posted April 16, 2006 - www.macjams.com/song/20024 - and thought to myself .. hmmm what a fabulous tune to try my Tuvan Throat Singing attempts over ... I think the style that I am attempting here is called Sygyt - where a "flute like" high harmonic sound is emitted while droning (similar to a bagpipe) .... it's all in the position of the tongue (try not to get too excited now guys) ..... I have added a tiny little track at the end to show the sound as it comes out of my mouth ... but I got a little "Befuddled" while trying to record it .. but I think you get the idea of what I am doing and what I added to this tune ... (in addition to one other little "chanting" vocal track) ... I hope you enjoy the experience nonetheless (even tho my Tuvan Throat Singing still needs some serious practice) !

This was well worth the wait.
I've been excited about hearing you since you first mentioned it. Wow! Need a grant to go study in Mongolia.
Loved it. What an honor to be the first one to hear this,. Thanks, so much.

Alannah said 117 days ago
Thanks Char ....
.. yeah a free trip to Outer Mongolia would be great ... I think that is where my mother used to threaten to send me when I was a naughty child ! haha Thanks for the comment.

Killer mix
Your production just gets better and better. You give us all digeridoo dreams!

Alannah said 117 days ago
Well to be honest Luna .....
I had no hand in the original production of Didge's tune ... I merely did a little add on of lyric tracks onto the MP3 and tried to "blend" them as best as I could (knowing they were perched on top of the MP3) .. .thanks for the listen and the comment.

Different
Interesting and strange -- world music can take getting used to. It's both beautiful and unsettling. Thank you for the introduction.

Alannah said 117 days ago
Thanks Joanna ....
... in fact the World is both beautiful and unsettling ... the "music" just makes it interesting .... thanks for listening and commenting.

this is just fantastic. great experiment. a very successful one.

Alannah said 117 days ago
Thanks Chinaman2 ....
.. I have pretty much come to think of everything I post here at Macjams as an "experiment" ... that's the point ... step out of your comfort zone .. try on new things ... I would hate to sing the same song over and over again .. ack ... thanks for the comment and the listen !

davisamerica said 124 days ago
: -]

Alannah said 117 days ago

.. well you do know that the "Beer Gargle" goes a long way to helping get that "sound" out of my mouth in the first place .... glad to hear it was a sound you enjoyed hearing ... thanks!

Tuvan Throat
Alannah, wow. This was a great piece to start with, but what you've added here is spectacular. Just makes this piece so full and interesting. Totally put me into another state of mind. And I'm so impressed by what you've been able to accomplish with the Tuvan Throat singing! Very very cool. Thanks for this - definitely a download for the "Meditation" playlist on my iPod.

Alannah said 117 days ago
Thanks dirigent ...
... glad you enjoyed the meditation ... shhh don't tell anyone .. but I love listening to this one too ... and continue to try to practice my Throat Singing in the car when I drive ... gets me some weird looks from other drivers mind you ....

kassia said 123 days ago
Again
I just had to come back and say...I've been listening to this all day and it absolutely just takes my breath away. Just so incredibly beautiful, Alannah. I hope you do more as you improve your Tuvan Throat Singing skills.

Alannah said 117 days ago
So glad to have you back ....
... yes I am continuing to practice my Tuvan Throat Singing .. but am still having trouble "harnessing" that high harmonic part ... sort of like a child who learns to whistle for the first part .. the tweet comes out .. but trying to control it and make it sound like a planned tune is still a challenge ... I am working on it tho cause Didge-Ache asked me to record some dry tracks of it that he wants to use on some future tunes ... would sound better if I could control the highs and form them into something that sounds somewhat cohesive .. rather than the train whistle sound .. hahaha thanks for your support!

peacepiano said 123 days ago
Sound
Very different. I looked for some mongolian landscape pictures to really get in the mood. I like the way this takes its time and speaks to you. The dynamics, the timbre of the voices, all very expressive without using our conventions of rhythm and melody, cool.

Thanks
Bill

Alannah said 117 days ago
yes well ....
.. there "might" actually have been some "conventions of rhythm and melody" if I had practiced working on controlling that high harmonic more before I hit the "record" button .. hahahaha still working on it ... but yes ... the whole sound of meditative music does seem to take on a life of its own which is quite different from todays modern music .... (and yesterdays music too for that matter) ... thanks for the listen and comment !

saymme said 120 days ago
..
This is like WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what else can be said ! ; ) LOVE IT

Alannah said 117 days ago
Thanks Sayme ...
I think the WOW Factor originates with Didge-Ache's original work .... I just also said WOW and couldnt resist trying my Tuva thing all over it .... I enjoy this style of music myself ....

radiorebelde said 120 days ago
whoah!
very very awesome! This really does belong in a meditative playlist, so I'm afraid I'm going to have to heist it! :)

excellently done! Is this the adhan by any chance?

Alannah said 117 days ago
well radio ....
... "heist" away !!! Um ... what's an "adhan"? Is that anything like an add-on? heh heh .... glad you enjoyed it .. resume meditating .... oooohhhmmmmmm

AcetyleneJukebox said 119 days ago
Very cool
Great collaboration. Fascinating mix of world music styles. Keep up the good work on the Tuvan throat singing.

Alannah said 117 days ago
Thanks A ....
.. I love "World Music" ... and have been listening to the Tuva Singers for about 5 years now .. never thought I would EVER see the day where I would actually attempt to make that sound myself (I think I read somewhere that Women are actually forbidden from making that sound in Tuva - and it is believed that if they do ... they are possessed by the Devil or something like that ) .... oops my bad ! hahahaha Thanks for the listen and the comment.

Gotta get in to get out
Is this the first time I've heard you? Wow, I gotta get out (o should I say "in") more! Nice voyage to out-there inner space. Amazing stuff.

Alannah said 111 days ago
HAHAHAHA
... of ALL the songs to place as a First Listen ... cause this was certainly a FIRST for me ..... honestly (well ok I have been known to do this sort of thing in the car and the shower ... but ....) ... glad you stopped by and enjoyed the style !

drakonis said 95 days ago
excellent
And your singing does melt in perfectly with Didge's didge sounds. Very nicely sung and mixed... although maybe almost too well... I think you need to do this again, but showcase your vox a little more!

Too bad Richard Feinman never made it to Tuva, he would have tried singing that way too.

Drakonis
