Keywords stuck (6)buckhorn (1)poo poo head (1)father sings to his son (1)
Description As a real life father, I was really touched by this original buckhorn song about a father's love for his son. It's probably my favorite of his great songs. His version is called These Things and I thought it was removed until Lennon714 spotted it. What a great tune- go download it now!

I took a perfectly wonderful country western cowboy campfire tune and turned it into something a little more electro-pop (imagine that). I dropped a section where he had some magnificent strumming chord changes alongside with his howling oohs and ahhhs which I was unable to recreate no matter how hard I howled.

I did not modify the lyrics, even though I think poo poo head might be considered explicit.

I have a few more covers in the works that I hope to post in the near future.
Lyrics your stuck with me
your stuck with me forever
and heaven knows how these things go
you could have done much better

your mama couldn't keep you
her nasty habits took their toll
she skipped parole

I'll write it on a stone
carve it in a tree
you'll never be alone
if there's breath in me
and though you ain't my own
you'll always be my little baby

you poo poo head
you always drive me crazy
tear out my hair and rip my shirt
the situations so hazy

your mama couldn't stay here
she took the truck it's your bad luck
you're stuck with me

even when you're
six foot one
you'll always be my
fine young son
until the cuckoo birds all come
you'll always be my little baby

I don't know
the original, but this was made for you and I'm not surprised you went for the most radical-sounding adpatation of the tune. The synths give a happy, childish edge to the song, especially those wavy ones. It all has a contagious, positive effect.

five_extra_arms said 129 days ago
Childish Edge
I'll have to use this expression when I describe what I do.

You nailed it!

Thanks man,

Bob

biba_nova said 129 days ago
Brilliant
I am off to listen to the original now

Can't find it....

Found It
Here's buckhorn's original song "These Things"

Thanks Lennon714 for pointing it out! When I downloaded his file, it was called "Stuck", so I named my song Stuck. I love his version.

some serious singing on this love the electroexcentricness of this now I need to listen to the original! Being a father is a great thing excellent tune and a nice pick for the challange. Enjoyed!

fatherness
you know what I'm talking about!

lavalamp said 129 days ago
Never heard......
the original, but I may say the same for others, anyway.
I'm funking out here in my room.

You're an original, Bob. I sure this was a true, home to earth piece. And you just warp the hell out of it, as only you can do.

Tasty production.

Funkin Room
Thanks Dave,

you know warped as well as anyone.

Now quit jumping on the couch, you can break your neck!

Lennon714 said 129 days ago
Wow!
I love how you put your own edge to this. Buckhorn's original is a great tune and you're right, it's a perfect snapshot of fatherhood. This is really cool. The chord changes with the "my baby" at the end are perfect.

For everyone else, Buckhorn's original is called "These Things".

five_extra_arms said 128 days ago
These Things
Thanks so much for pointing out the original song. I was spooked when I thought it was deleted, as it is truly one of my most favorite songs ever.

I was worried that it wouldn't be taken seriously because of the hyper electro juvenile approach I took. I connected so deeply with this song that when I decided it was the cover I wanted to do, I scared myself with my initial ideas. I thought, no way this will work.

After about 2 weeks of this and that I was convinced it was the best I could ever do. In the final days my wife convinced me to speed it up a bit as my twangy vocal approach seemed to drag. I sped it up a few dozen bpm's and there you have it.

came back
for another listen (forgot my ipod today). What a gem. I think the people here at MJ know your style and it would probably be more jarring if you tried to do a "tender" version of it. That's what made this challenge so fun. You took a great song and put your signature on it.

sonnyjim said 129 days ago
electro bop!
Well, all those synthy sounds keep this popping along.... this is more 80's than the 80's were!

five_extra_arms said 128 days ago
More 80's
I heard you say it!

I'll give you more 80's than you can bear.

Thanks for listening.

ic42 said 129 days ago
electro
it wiggles out from the original, and creates a new life of its own. such antic singing and synthesizer. it is a slight reminder of ric ocasek. however you create more exuberance. this music is a manic smile. it is perfect. 0x0

five_extra_arms said 128 days ago
Electrocasek
I'm guilty of the early Cars influencing my song writing, singing "style". When I bought my first bass, I remember learning to play the first Cars album, the Ramones, The Police, The Clash and the Sex Pistols and now look at me. I've practically gone country.

Thanks icey

Vic Holman said 129 days ago
hey hey hey
i was considering one of Buckhorns songs.

well call me poo poo head, you really took this into a different realm altogether. genius! and has a cuckoo funkiness to it. way to go Bob.

five_extra_arms said 128 days ago
Hey Poo Poo Head
You certainly oughta cover a buckhorn tune as it really suits you. If you do, let me play the crazed synthesizer parts...

Oh, I forgot, you're not the guy who likes to play crazed synthesizer parts in every song he does. You're the drummer, right?

(:

this is cool ...I m enjoyin your singing ...
nice mixing ..is this a guitar ?? or a loop
about the 2:00 ? .I dunno I m having the rockin
beats of the pretenders ..thnx alot for sharin !!!!

five_extra_arms said 128 days ago
No Loops, No Guitars
Pure synthetic manufactured sounds. I worked hard to get that lead guitar sound the way I liked it, so I appreciate that you've noticed it. I tried to make it sound like a real guitar, heavy, distant, distorted - just wanted a good contrast between the heavy use of blippity blips and swirls.

Thanks for your kind words.

The Infinites said 129 days ago
I miss that voice!
Never mind early Human League - Bob, you're in a league of your own!

No loss of your punk sensibilities with this mashed up cover - just brilliant. Love the slurred, intentionally lazy, almost wrecked vocal here. Catchy synth all the way, too.

Great to hear you on form, dude!

Jim

five_extra_arms said 128 days ago
Slurred And Lazy Wreck
I often think that I have an unconventional lazy, twangy singing style and this song does seem to prove that point. I used about 4 or 5 vocal tracks and just tried to reach really far for some form of expressive nonsense that might blend with the previous tracks. I wasn't too disappointed when one of the wheels fell off of my vocal chords and I rolled into the ditch. It almost validated my efforts. Almost.

Glad you liked it Jim. I liked your entry in the Cover Challenge as well.

dajama said 129 days ago
Excellent
I have not heard the original (yet!) but this is cool. Great pop sound. I love the lyrics, and the groove is infectious. Love the synth sounds. Great stuff. Nicely done. Peace.

five_extra_arms said 128 days ago
Pop Song
This is about as pop as I get - country western music will do it to me every time.

Buckhorn's lyrics are really touching. I'm just glad that the opportunity arose to try my hand at a version of this favorite song of mine.

Thanks for the comments.

There were some moments when I thought the funk was getting way out of hand, but how can one be too funky?

Phantasma-frickin'-glorious. I am boppin' my long-banged two toned mop-head right along. Love the affected vox. Totally fun!

Hondo In Flight
Isn't he the cutest little guy you ever saw? And his son is cute too.... oh, wait.... Katyraven took this photo last month and I just loved it. It's great being married to such an amazing artist. She endured my many recording and mixing sessions, always offering the most excellent advice. I have her and buckhorn to thank for this tune.

As if the 80s never ended
Great piece of knob twiddling here. All these synths give a very playful mood to this piece. And the guitar is just as wobbly sounding.

Very much enjoyed.

five_extra_arms said 128 days ago
The 80s Never Ended!
I twiddled the knobs and broke them off just to prove it.

Thanks for listening and I'm happy you've enjoyed it. I enjoyed making it.

buckhorn said 128 days ago
Hey Bob!
Im very honored you chose to cover this. Its a very original take and it put a big fat smile on my face which isn't too easy to do. Love the pic too. You do look cool in that hat. Enjoyed very much.

Hey Matt!
Hey Matt
I've had this song in my humming repertoire for about a year now so when I decided to give it a go I realized that there were no brakes in this racecar, but the other pedal seemed to work fine.

I'm happy that you were able to muster a smile after what I put this poor song through. You have the tolerance of a true father. Thanks for this fantastic song.

Rebsie said 128 days ago
Lovely
Very nice combination of different synth sounds to sit under the vocal, and the guitar puts the icing on the cake.

Melodious Enigma
I don't know what kind of filling graces your innards but your music always takes me to strange new places. The way the keyboard hops around is uniquely enjoyable and the reckless affectation in your voice entertains to no end.

Very well done.

five_extra_arms said 128 days ago
Innards
You have a very nice way of saying my voice cracks you up.

Thanks for the comments. Your picture tells me that you are the kinda guy that always accepted a ride from strangers who took you to strange new places. Luckily, you were tough enough to fight your way free from captivity, chewing through ropes and chains and making your way back through the frozen tundra with yet another story of abduction, torture and brainwashing.

Your pal,

Bob

love it. i am a huge fan of Buckhorn and I really like how you twisted this into something completely different. Loving that funky clavinet bit (and the vox are perfect as always). and yes, we should do M.E. together.

Twisted Buckhorn Tunes
I can't avoid those clav parts sometimes. Glad you liked what I did to this great song of Matt's.

M.E. - Let's do it!!

sloparts said 126 days ago
I went to the source
and listened to Matt version so I'd know better were you came from Bob.

This is very different than Matt's version, but is also very original. This is more playful feeling. I will admit, it sounds a little strange to my ears, but that more because I haven't been exposed to this type of music much, if at all, in the past.

That said, it came out very well and retains the heartfelt meaning of the original, if not the genre.

Thanks for sharing it Bob. you did an excellent job on it.

The Source For Strange Ears
Ed,

thank you so much for taking the time to listen to the song. I'm sure it was hard to endure my version and I greatly appreciate the fact that you stuck it out AND took the time to compare and comment.

It means the world to me that you gave me the time of day.

Thanks,

Bob

POP!
Starts off Numan, ends up Bob D. Light and fun(n)ky, this is a typically big hearted offering from you! Pretty radical make-over from the original, but a great tune, with a clever little structure (sorry i didnt reply earlier but i'm just back to the land of fast broadband).

Glad to have you back, even if it's just for a quick peek. Hope to see you a bit before you leave the for the Dark Continent again.

Thanks for listening to this POP hit of mine... Buckhorn is my Bernie Taupin.
