Description When I was walking in Memphis, I wrote this song about it. It's not a very happy song, but then again I didn't think that Memphis was a very happy city either.

This is a collaboration with Etienne Verheem (vocal) and Erwin Steenbergen (piano and organ). My girlfriend, Helma, added some background vocals. Especially Erwin's playing towards the end of the song is, in my view, magnificent.
Lyrics Everybody knows that Memphis
holds the greatest memories
but you’ve got to admit that Memphis now
is not a place you want to be

America’s tortured image
stares you in the face:
poverty, distributed by race

Lord, save this city - save this city from its doom
‘cause it’s the least that you can do

I went out of downtown Memphis
because I couldn’t stand the smell
to watch the people cry
for the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll

I passed 47 churches - more than any Lord could need -
and Taco Bells as far as the eye could see

Lord, save this city
where people still believe in you
‘cause it’s the least that you can do
Hardware MacBook Pro, Edirol FA 101, Erwin's stuff
Software: Logic Pro, Amplitube for guitars

for the kinds words...

Surprise!
Haha, always in for a little surprise: nice samples at the start & end of the song. Roger Waters would have been so proud....
Thank you for the nice words, means a lot. In my opinion, the lyrics are some of the truest American singer-songwriter-esque words I've seen from a Dutch lad. Randy Newman would as well have been proud.

Cheers mate!

Well
thanks again for playing along, a fine performance.

The quote,
by the way, is from a speech that Martin Luther King, Jr, gave the night before he was murdered in Memphis.

It may be sad,
but it very well done. Memphis ain't what it used to be that's for sure, but then again what city is now days.

Love the mix and the instrumentation. Great story, well told and well sung. Everything is right where it ought to be in the mix which is very cool.

Thanks for sharing this one Denny,

Ed
