Description well, close to a month ago I recorded the music to this. The summer heat set in and my recording room upstairs was to hot for the computer and software to work well. Well it finally cooled off yesterday, with a 40 degree drop in the daily high, so I could finally record the vocals. Now i am already missing summer.
Lyrics August Days

summer forever
I wish it wouldn't fade away
blue sky warm night
really makes me feel alive

chorus:
august days fade away summer slips away again

colors will fade
leaving me in a world of gray
seasons changing
see it in the leaves and days

chorus:
august days fade away summer slips away again

darkness creeps in
I hang on to those august days
each year I leave
a little piece of me behind

chorus:
august days fade away summer slips away again

I'll wait hibernate
as the vampire comes out of me
someday I'll fade
into my own august days

chorus:
august days fade away summer slips away again

Delicate
and very good.Have you ever tried a drumless version (or at least only at the solo)?
I think It would sound even better.
The way you mix accoustic and electric guitars, with each one finding its own space and never cancelling one another is great, also.

Vic Holman said 138 days ago
ya know
I was on the fence about taking out the drum wood block out on the very last solo. That part probably doesn't really need it now that I think about it.

I appreciate the listen, thanks!

MarkHolbrook said 139 days ago
Vic
This is one of your best. Love the general feel of it.

Very clean mix and an amazing song!

Vic Holman said 138 days ago
Thanks Mark
this is a song that almost didn't happen. I was fooling around on the keyboard part at the beginning and recorded it. I was about to trash it then thought that I could actually work with it. It's a pretty simple tune really.

MarkHolbrook said 138 days ago
Vic...
For someone with your talents, spend the $350 to get yourself a Drobo RAID backup drive. You can expand it to multi-terrabyte. Back up ALL your music there, even the stuff you never plan to touch or plan to trash because for the rest of us these are solid gold!!!

Vic Holman said 137 days ago
back up
actually i just bought a back up drive several weeks ago. I knew I was tempting fate if I didn't.

Peter Bauckham said 139 days ago
Missing the Summer...
...still waiting for ours - It might be August but it looks like October from the office window this morning.

Another great song with your unmistakable sound. Interesting comment from yrp regarding the drums - there's something about the sound you get from the drums that's unique to your songs/production.

I'll be downloading this later to add to the collection!

Peter

Vic Holman said 138 days ago
Thanks Peter
Last May we were wondering if we were ever going to get a summer. but it kicked in. high 80's & low 90's with low humidity and no rain. Ireally liked the longer days of sunlight the most.

I always play the drums via midi on the keyboard. A great way to give it some more flexability.

said 139 days ago
Lovely...
Your sound is aging like a fine wine my friend. This is classic. (Perfect song for the "Summer of Love" challenge.)

As usual, I like everything about this piece Vicar. My only "complaint" is that you keep upping the ante for the rest of us! Ha ha...

Bravo and Encore...

Be well friend!

Vic Holman said 138 days ago
But I like beer better
Thanks Mike. It was nice to finally put this to rest. The music was done 3 weeks ago. the temperature finally came down enough so I could record the vocals upstairs in my recording room. I wasn't about to get up at 4 in the morning to do them. and hey, "Summer of your Love" really blew me away.

Harrison, but still extremely Vic Holman. The semi-dark to light chorus is great and has your name all over it. I see what yrp is talking about, but I love the drums. It's very Ringo, which I think suits the piece very well.

Vic Holman said 138 days ago
Thanks Eric
I know people laugh about Ringo's drumming. but I like how he does it. So when I play the drums on the keyboard it is always intentional to his style, keeping it sorta simple really helps in not messing with the other tracks, I have found.

Lennon714 said 136 days ago
I
Couldn't agree more. Ringo is a simple drummer, but wicked effective. Can you imagine songs like Strawberry Fields Forever, I am the Walrus, or A Day in the Life with anyone else? Again, top tune you've got here.

Vic Holman said 135 days ago
yup
perfect examples

Laid back summer song.

Great sound from the guitars as normal.

Beautifully smooth production.

Cheers

Dick

Vic Holman said 138 days ago
Thanks Dick
I was working on this one and a fast rock song at the same time. Since I had the lyrics to this and August was getting near it's end, I figured the timing was right for this song.

Plus, I like summers, it makes you want to take naps.:)

Feter said 138 days ago

Man !!! .. this is just a cool groove ...
definelty a perfect perfomrance for the stage
with all the flowers and colors all around
the guitars tones so special that reminds me of
1967 ...best kind best kind as always ... just
another gem thnx alot for sharin !!!!

Vic Holman said 137 days ago
thanks Feter
it's a groovy kind feel. if i had added a sitar that would of really give it a '67 send up.

summer
I just got back from a week in Greece and I have just the feeling that summer is about to slip away again. Coming back to Norway and 15C tonight tells me autumn is getting close.

Your music seems to be in progression these days. This one is another strong composition and performance from you. The intro got me thinking of George Harrison for some reason.

Vic Holman said 137 days ago
Thanks Thor
yeah, you see those little things that fall and winter are on the way. After last years record snow in my area, I am not looking forward to winter at all.

I bet your vacation in Greece was great, and hard to leave.

peacepiano said 138 days ago
Summer
Great end of summer song. I like the full mix of instruments, wouldn't have thought of this as "acoustic". Electric guitar solo really rocks!

Thanks
Bill

Vic Holman said 137 days ago
Thanks Bill
it was hard to decide which gendre. I figured that since it is mostly acoustic guitar tracks throughout, that was as good as any. after i recorded the 2 main acoustics, I already knew how everything else would fit in. So, the music was recorded over a weekend. then it sat for 3 weeks before i could get around to the vocals.

Marastique said 138 days ago
Lovely sound!
I hear George Harrison sound there in the chord progression, vocals and guitar work. Very tasty leads. Cool tune!

Vic Holman said 137 days ago
Thanks Guy(s)
I did learn to play guitar from beatle records and George was a fav of mine, something is probably ingrained I'm sure

jiguma said 138 days ago

Wonderful production - you sound inspired on this one Vic,
Neil

Vic Holman said 137 days ago
Thanks Neil
no big inspiration. It just happened. I was fooling around on the keyboard practicing and the intro came about. I was about to trash it then I thought maybe I could work off of it. It's basic chords and once I got going it came together nicely.

regulus said 138 days ago
Tasty,
very cool and well produced. Good layering and everything. Has a tad of Julius (?) Lennon and Harrison quality to it. Great vox you do with this. Glad the temp dropped for you. But this tune, is still hot.

Vic Holman said 137 days ago
Thanks Richard
In one way it was good the temp fell so I could finally record the vocals. but then again I hate summer cooling off. I'm not a winter type person.

The Beatle influence I think is ingrained in my subconscience

timothy devine said 138 days ago

I love your style.
great job with this one Vic...

I agree. Summers are to short. for us northerners

I have to upgrade the photo, i actually left some out. lol

Kicker of a new tune of yours! it's great

Holy Toledo!
I'm so late to this one. Amazing piece of songwriting. Love the mood this sets. Great production, too.

I would actually like to hear a female vocalist on this one. Just a thought.

Cool one, Vic.

Dave

Vic Holman said 137 days ago
hey Dave
I agree,
I can see a female vocal for this as well. Oh well, go with what you got I guess

Moviz said 138 days ago
Really nice
song here and the performance is excellent; love the Sitar/guitar sound giving it a Beatle-ish feel and a great Summer sound..... nice lyrics and sung with just the right feel for this. I envy you your summer though, wall to wall rain here, Regards M

Vic Holman said 137 days ago
Thanks Maurice
the guitar line is three guitars playing in harrmony, I actually learned that from George Harrison from his Early solo years.

Sorry to hear about the wet conditions. Around my parts a summer is everything it is meant to be, that's why I hate to see it pass by.

buckhorn said 137 days ago
im a sucker for
a 50's chord progression, its perfect for the theme.
brilliant production as always. enjoyed very much.

Vic Holman said 137 days ago

I was thinking this was coming across like a lot of Roy Orbison, just updated of course, Now if I could only sing like good ole Roy.

Char said 137 days ago
You are among the
most accomplished musicians on this site. I have nothing at all to say about technicalities. I am in awe that you are able to do some many things so very well. This was wonderful to listen to. The voice is mellow and the guitar kicks ass. Thanks.

Vic Holman said 136 days ago
Thanks Char
thanks for the kind words. it's years of practice practice practice and luck.

Summer?
We don't really have proper summers over here any more so I'm having to use my imagination. :)

Delicious guitars as always, and I like the tone of your voice double-tracked in the slightly higher register. Great bit of songwriting too. Why is it I can never think of anything intelligent to say about your music? Ah well, just have to make do with another "great song, I really like this". Again.

Vic Holman said 136 days ago
Thanks Rebsie
to bad about your summers over there. we have quite a contrast in washington state seattle gets the cooler temperatures and overcast and on the eastside we get clear skies and warm to hot temperatures. it more then makes up for the winters.

the high harmony is all I can do. I have yet to figure how to do proper vocal harmonies.

without a doubt
I love this tune. there is definitely something about the fading of summer that hits me too. Ever since I got out of school, I always had this feeling that when summer ended that there really wasn't anything to look forward to. Thought I was crazy and maybe I am, but I really can say that this tune resonated with me. I love the production and I don't know that I can add anything that hasn't been said, but I loved the almost Beatles-esque sound the vocals invoked, and the space you create for such varying guitar sounds is tremendous! Great stuff!

Vic Holman said 136 days ago
fades away
ya i hate to summer go. it always seems to short. in a couple months it will be more time in front of the computer monitor. the lighting just isn't the same.

I grew up on the beatles so the influence usually shows up now and then in my songs.

Ibstrat said 137 days ago

always be counted on to deliver a great song with really good production.Your guitar playing and arranging is outstanding.

Vic Holman said 136 days ago
Thanks Mark
it was a toss up between this song and a rocking tune that I had been working on at the same time. you just can't sing about august in september. that's just not right

Henke said 136 days ago
Good song,
The melancholy captured well I think. Lot of Beatles in the comments already. I also hear a bit of Mike Oldfield in the solo, right?!

For once we had a summer like yours here in Stockholm, but now it's been pretty wet for a couple of weeks, so sure I AM missing summer too...

Stay well,

Henke

Vic Holman said 136 days ago
thanks Henke
summers are great. i don't even mind mowing the lawn every week. sure beats shoveling snow.

the guitar solo style is probably a amalgamation of all my favorite guitar gods. I like it having a bit of a melody going on when I can.

rsorensen said 136 days ago
wow
nice big full sound on this one. i like the melancholic vibe. great vox, playing, everything. the guitar part almost sounds like a pan flute during the chorus and that's really cool. great solo. drums are perfect for the song. do i hear fingersnaps in there or are they handclaps? either way I like em. nice one, vic.

Vic Holman said 136 days ago
Thanks Ridd
even though summer and warm days are still going on i find turning on the lights in the house before 8:00 is a drag

the chorus guitars are 3 part harmony. i just love using them when ever I can.
I think that is suppose to be a wood bloke in the midi drums.

said 136 days ago
Lennon-esque...
Vic, well done lad! This touches that other Beatle sound. Your instrumentation is rich... love the guitar solo and the cool harmony that quicks in near its end... again very Fab... The synth keyboard really fills the song out nicely. No complaints on my part part. One of your best. The Lads of Liverpool would be proud of you.

By the way, you sing this with just the right touch of wistfulness... sitting comfortably in the song.

Jack

Vic Holman said 136 days ago
thanks Jack
a bit of beatles meets roy orbison was what i was going for.
As anyone could guess, that I can't even come close to singing like Roy.

said 136 days ago
You can call me Roy....
Well, if you missed coming close to a Roy vocal, I think you, nonetheless, approached a quality reminiscent of J. Lennon... that, with your music, produces a wonderful quality and aura to the whole song.

Karmatoburn said 136 days ago

Its cooled here as well, and I'm already missin the summer, and it ain't even officially over yet. Big production smiles as always. The doubled leads were esp cool.

Vic Holman said 135 days ago
ha
the early cool downs are kind of disturbing. the only thing I can do now is look at the calendar and figure how long for summer to return. Why I never moved south is beyond me.

Bob Rodgers said 135 days ago

Great song and another great production.

Love this song Vic and a great sound here from all the instruments, a great mix and the guitars sound superb!

every once in a while I'll a song about a month or season. I recorded the music 3 or 4 weeks back and finally got to writing & record the vocals recently when it was a cool day, that got me to thinking uh oh there goes summer.

thetiler said 134 days ago
Always enjoy
your terrific rock-kinks type voice quite striking vic!

I have to say, I think your really roll up your MJ sleeves and produce rock solid good rockin. From the textures in the guitar, the beats, blends that seem like only Logic can do or expensive apps.
Lots of quality.
Thanks for bringing quality to MJ and it isn't always easy with all the instruments. But then adding great quality vocal in a very nice soft rock fashion.
Impressed!

WAy To GO
Nice ending too!

Vic Holman said 133 days ago
Thanks Bill
I've pretty well have figured out my presets for the guitars and instruments I play. So, with some luck all I need to do is play. Then make adjustments here and there on levels and panning. It really gets easier as time goes on... without any "kinks" :)

SJB said 134 days ago
Hi
What a great tune. A lot of instruments but all clear in the mix. Always nice to hear a real bass and the SG lead just cutting now as i type is this is wonderful.
Maybe the vocal could be a bit louder as it is just a little distinct sometimes.
Brilliant - no more to say
Cheers
Steve

Vic Holman said 133 days ago
Thanks Steve
Almost all my tunes start out from playing a acoustic on the couch in the evening. But this was initially inspired when I was playing around on the keyboard (the intro part) I decided to take it from there and played it over and over a few nights in a row on the acoustic. Then I start hearing in my head how everything else can fall into place. sure saves time when recording.

said 133 days ago
Very very Nice Vocals!!!...
I like the contemplative nature of the lyrics... summer slips away again, but "Memory is the power to gather roses in winter." (a handy thing when you're up to your tookus in a gazillion unique snowflakes, your back to the front door of your warm and toasty abode in hip waders with a snow shovel in your mittens. : ) ) Summer here was so awesome!!! For the first time in years the weather was sunny, warm and pleasant, with thunderstorms in the evening to spark things up and keep the flowers beautiful and the grass green. We spent lots of enjoyable evenings out on the back deck. I'm wondering if we will pay for the wonderful summer with a harsher than usual winter - not good with the price of petrol going up. But I am hoping for some snow though, because it's so beautiful to watch it falling. : )

Vic Holman said 133 days ago
Hey CJ
yes summer was perfect here as well, a little later then the norm. high temps, but very low humidity... and the holy grail of a box fan of course. The past week the tmps. dropped way down, way earlier then usual. I am not looking forward to winter. I still have nightmarish visions of last years winter.

rover101 said 132 days ago
Pretty damn good
within it's genre (which isn't, I'm afraid, my favourite)(I'm old and closed-minded)

But there is one thing....you have a great tone on the lead guitar, but since we never hear it 'til the break, I had a real feeling of 'where the hell did that come from?', like suddenly I was listening to a different song...probably by a different artist...I honestly feel that getting a few lead licks in before the solo, starting early in the song, would make the song far more cohesive.

Good lyric.

Cheers, Shaky

Vic Holman said 131 days ago
Thanks Shaky
Usually when I set up a solo I tend to give it something different and maybe a bit unexpected. I think your idea is really a good idea, of a snippet or 2 of whats to come by the time the guitar solo comes into play.

thanks again

Where have I been! you really make a good song. Ok I have said it more than once this is your best singing. I truly think you have found your voice! NOt that it wasnt there before but it is refined treated with care pressed and folded And out there for someone to wear. What the heck am I talking about very cool song Vic!

That's the most memorable chorus I've heard in a while. I love the electric harmony. Would love to hear more of that guitar sound.

The whole thing really complements the idea of the lyrics.

Vic Holman said 119 days ago

the guitars in the chorus line is 3 guitars playing in harmony. I tend to do it quite a lot in my songs. it's actually fun to hear how they can come together.

Missing Summer?
Quit your whining and come to Florida in January and I'll give you summer. We'll have a hot sweaty cook out on my deck and you can sing some sad songs about how you're ready to go back home and how much you hate mosquitoes.

Seriously Vic, it's been one day!

On a cooler note, your masterful balance of strumming/plucking acoustic guitars and brutal smoking electric leads is as refreshing as an evening breeze.

Regarding your drumming abilities, I've said it a dozen times before and I don't mind saying it again, when I have a band, Vic Holman will be my drummer!
