Keywords Side (6)Castanets (3)Tangerine (2)Spanish (27)Romeo (3)Juliet (3)
Description This is a remix from a previous edition. I remixed bass, drums and guitars and added a couple of new parts blended from other parts. I also brought the vocal up a bit.

I forgot to mention the photo is of my mom and dad about 25 years ago. My mom died in December and my dad in 1987.

Thanks for listening.
Lyrics By Your Side

Everybody loves you, but they don't know why.
Is it charisma, or the color of your eyes?
Everybody wants you for their own,
They believe you're the cure for being alone

I'll be your Romeo, you be my Juliet, I want to be right by your side.
I'll be your Spanish dance, you be my castanets,
I want to be right by your side
I'll be your red caboose, I'll never turn you loose,
I want to be right by your side.
I'll watch your front and back, I'm going to clear the track,
I want to be right by your side, by your side.

I've seen you on the street, and though we've never met
You're the one inside my mind, you’re the one I can't forget.
Let me come to your window, I will sing you my song.
Let me tell you how I love you, what's right and can't be wrong.

I'll be your Romeo, you be my Juliet, I want to be right by your side.
I’ll be your up and down I want it all around,
I want to be right by your side.
I want your tangerine, I want to lick it clean,
I want to be right by your side.
From the morning sun, until the day is done,
I want to be right by your side, by your side.

Don't want to waste no time, let me put it on the line,
I want to be with you.
See the sights on the Boulevard, nothing easy is hard,
Nothing false is true.

Give me something to cling to, a nod or a wink.
Let me take you by the hand, let me tell you what I think.
Climb inside my motorcar, together we will ride.
Travel all around the world, and our love will be our guide.

So Anyway . . .
I saw Steely Dan last week in St. Louis. Great concert, great music and amazing musicians at the fabulous Fox.

Woody
Went to see "Vicky Christine Barcelona" the new Woody Allen movie tonight. Good movie.

Is there any better film actress than Penelope Cruz? She was the spirit of the movie.

Form over function
Nice song! The rhythm guitars are catchy and lively and the lead guitar details add lots of character. I think your vocals are delivered really well with fun lyrics. I wouldn't change a thing about the performance or composition.

The mix is another story - it sounds really harsh and squeezed. I think the harshness may come from 1) lots of high frequencies (9k ) across all the tracks and 2) very stiff compression. Did you maybe rely on a limiter on the master track? Also, there isn't much use of stereo width (though I caught a few panned guitars).

If you are thinking of another pass at this I'd recommend setting EQ and compression for each track individually and mixing with no dynamic adjustment to the master track. Roll-off the tops of the rhythm guitars (-6dB shelving above 2k-5k) to drop them in the background and trim the bottoms off around 500k. I think you'll hear the mix warm up and round out nicely.

I didn't vote, but if I did I'd rate: 8-7-7-7 (I thought the performance was 8 but the production was 5 or 6).

Thanks
This what I was looking for was some tips on mixing this song. I've done it a couple of times, but am not familiar with EQ on individual tracks.

I did add some compression on the main track (rhythm guitars, bass, and drums). What happens is that I don't have enough processing power, so I combined tracks as an mp3 and bring them back to GB as a new song, then add some other tracks. This is what I did with the lead guitars.

Thanks for the comments. I am going to go back and try to fix this mix up again.

Processing power
If you're having a rough time with processing power you might try a different, minimalist approach to the mix. Arrange all your individual recordings/midi tracks in a song file and use only two filters on each: high pass and high shelf. These tend to be fairly easy on the processor and you should be able to run all your tracks simultaneously.

High pass chops off the low frequencies and high shelf reduces the high frequencies. Mix by ear and be sure none of the tracks clip. Don't be afraid to high-pass everything fairly high (from 400-600hz) except the bass and kick drum.

When you're ready, add compression to each track and freeze them one at a time. When that's done add a limiter to the master track and go back to balance-out the mix using only the individual track volume sliders.

Sounds Like a Plan
Thanks again for the input. The one thing I haven't done is create a song file. Is this something different than the song itself in GB?

How do I create such a file if different than the tracks in the song?

This is great information and I appreciate it very much.

Cool Song
I like the song a lot. High energy playing and singing. Not sure if I could have put into words what ChiKoppi is referring to, but I hear it also. Fine touches like that will elevate this to the ready for CD pressing level.

Thanks
Bill
