Description Tobin got me to thinking with his hard hitting interview skills - why not jump back into some of my jazz roots?

So here's a Boss Hook Bossa. Bossas remind me of the beach and summertime but do not be fooled, this is a gut wrenching existentialist bossa of the metaphysical torments of crisis without catharsis.

But then again everything sounds easy and free in the Bossa, so crack open a can of mixed nuts and pour something cold for this.

Thanks for the artistic inspiration, Tobin.

Giving my Hohner jazz box archtop guit a little work on this tune.

Boss Hook: Vocals, Blueridge Acoustic, Yamaha Acoustic, Hohner Archtop Electric, Bass, B3 organ (via Ensoniq keys), drum programming and percussion.

Lyrics Cruel, Cruel, Bossa

© John LaMantia for Boss Hook Music, 2008

Did you think that it would pass so fast
As you drown your sorrows in a whiskey glass
Take another glance around
Swear your feet stuck to the ground

Did you think it would be so hard
As you’re walking past the old man’s yard
You try to find the right way home
It’s getting darker and you’re all alone

You got a reason to cry
It’s a cruel, cruel world
And you don’t know what you’re gonna do

You’ve got a reason to cry
It’s a cruel, cruel world
And you don’t know what you’re gonna do

So you blame it on a rich man’s soul

You can’t count on later days
To make up for all those dues you paid
You know it don’t work that smooth
You take chances with the games you choose

Did she tell you that she’d let you down
Tear your dreams right to the ground
Makes your heart beat twice as fast
Make the final moments last

You got a reason to cry
It’s a cruel, cruel world
And you don’t know what you’re gonna do

You’ve got a reason to cry
It’s a cruel, cruel world
And you don’t know what you’re gonna do

So you blame it on a rich man’s soul

John
LaMachine... that is like your music... a music machine...

This is tight swings bossa... Very cool.

I love the intro. Very smooth and clean.

Not sure what it is but normally your vocals are so smooth. In this one they kind of bite a little. Maybe it's just me though.

Wonderful John...
I'm glad you decided to revisit those roots. This is so laid back, and easy to listen to. I especially like the lyric. It is a bit rushed in places, although I'm sure if and when you get the time, it will be ironed out. Those guitars sound great, the Honher sounds smooth as glass although it sounds like it needs a touch of eq to clean it up a bit. I did listen to this on my little crappy speakers so it might be due to them. Great Bossa Boss!!

Yeah
I wanted a jazz tone like Wes' for the octave stuff I was doing but a little more on the treble would give it more distinction for sure.

Awesome
Nice Bossa Nova I want to dance... Drink a cold beer and just enjoy the summer... Nice mix as well... Cheers

Cool tune
Has me swaying in my chair. Like the playing and singing a lot, but the production seems a bit light at in the top end. Would love to hear much more of the tops in the percussion in particular - you seem to have that top end edge on the vox though.

Anyway, I like the song a lot.

What
I like most about this site is that the constructive crit is so poignant and right on - I definitely have to take more time with the mix on the eq end of things - it could sparkle more with your helpful thoughts.

It's like...
...the blues...can be upbeat...but speaks of sadness...

You're very at home in this style...sounds great and tight. Archtop sounds great...

Yes!
That's it... never put it all together until you mentioned it - your voice does have a Boz quality to it. Not quite as bluesy but the timber is similar. Must be that LA - Chicago connection you have, Johnny!

Bob6stringer said 148 days ago
so good I'll say it twice.
John, your voice would make anyone's music sound great, unique and right on pitch without being machine-perfect. Your guitar playing sounds equally top-notch, so tasteful, and it's great to hear it in such a clean, open arrangement. And of course a great composition.

John, your voice...

This is catchy
I dont even listen to bossa much, but this is well made. I'm reminded of summer (or at least tropical weather). This is some good stuff man.
