Description as a sort-of place holder, while i'm redoing the vox on 'in my room' and working on another brand new tune, here's an old 5/4 song i composed right when i first got my v-drums. it's not obvious it's a 5/4 groove, which i like.

ps. the vocoder synth is really quiet on this, i know. that's intentional. it's meant to be a pad. the lyrics? i don't remember. i'm muttering something about summertime being way too short. (i wrote this last summer.)

so cool. i was hoping you'd post this one. love the crying guitars and the toms sound amazing at the end. this one has a lot of your trademarks in it. there needs to be a 'space rock' genre methinks.

12parsecs said 152 days ago
yes, add space rock!
thanks, ridd. i changed the vocoder a bit, since i couldn't get the old one working. good description for the gtrs - ie. 'crying'.

Ibstrat said 154 days ago
The
production on this is incredibly good. The way that you drop into 5/4 time at the beginning is really clever. The the vocals back in the mix fits perfectly. This reminds me of some stuff that I've heard by the band The Flower Kings.Very artistic- amazing.

12parsecs said 152 days ago
cheers!
thanks for the comment, ib! (i almost used ibs as an acronym for your online name... oops! :)

yeah, i love songs that totally throw you for a loop as far as tempo and signature goes. i'll have to check out the flower kings now!

Lennon714 said 154 days ago
wonderful
I honestly don't have one criticism to send you. While my wife was in UofA I used to drive the 2 hours from Phoenix to Tucson and just blast mixed tapes with tunes just like this. This takes me back there like you wouldn't believe. Great music, long road trips and the love of your life... that's living. Thanks for putting this up!

sweet magnadoodling.

drivin' tunes
yeah, i could see this as some nice driving accompaniment. thanks for the comment about my magnadoodling skills. i don't have kids, believe or not... my girlfriend wanted one for christmas. :)

Sonic
delight. This is so very very beautiful. Thanks for the D/L and a great piece of music. Not often something comes along in 5/4 that is this good. No nits here just smiles.

12parsecs said 152 days ago
the hedgehog
thanks for listening and commenting, guy. your kind words are appreciated. let's hear it for the underdog of time signatures, 5/4!

michael2 said 154 days ago
really nice
i'm gonna say that downtempo is the wrong genre (more like indie electronica). really amazing, those guitars sound incredible and fit in so well with the synthy sound bed. this is a really beautiful song. i wish i knew more about off time signatures, i really only know the obvious ones. this is amazing, no criticisms whatsoever. love when the gtr chords come in halfway. nice.

12parsecs said 152 days ago
indie electronica
i agree, downtempo is the wrong genre... but i couldn't find ambient electronic, much less your perfect description - indie electronica. i tried to make the guitars sounding like warm synth-bells, less like guitars. until, of course, the guitar breakdown. (one of my fav parts too.) thanks for checking this one out!

peacepiano said 154 days ago
Groove
Very nice, smooth for an odd time sig, rhythms are infectious. I found myself imagining words for the vocal part. Cool.

Thanks
Bill

12parsecs said 152 days ago
thanks, bill!
i wrote/recorded this track a year ago. and back then, i wouldn't sing even if i had a gun to my head. hence the vocoder action. you wanna try singing to it? :)

Godchaser said 154 days ago
Beautiful is right!
This is a wonderful piece of work.Lots of really fine elements and solid creative writing, crafting and production. It contains a lot of qualities I listen for when I tune in here at MJs.One of those rare inspiring posts.Very much enjoyed.

starry melancholy
It works for me. I like the weaving of sounds you have here, and I get the end of summer feeling you describe.

and you're righ the summer is way too short.

12parsecs said 152 days ago
summertime
starry melancholy. i like that!

yeah, even on the unbearably hot days, i still know in the back of my mind - summer is way too short.

Cool Pic
This should start off your album. If I say this reminds me of Cold Play meets Pink Floyd, would you be mad?

Freaking Excellent!

12parsecs said 152 days ago

what? be mad at being compared to two super-groups that i really enjoy? definitely wouldn't be mad at that. cheers, mr lava!

Sweet sounds
Lovely piece of music. intro is a perfect start, some really good playing of everything here. Haunting melody, vox sound good like that. That bass is booming great. Excellent track.

12parsecs said 152 days ago
haunting.
thanks for the comment! the bass really has to hold down the progression in this one. (except for one part where the guitars help.) there isn't a lot of middle in the bass (400 to 1kHz) so I suspect the bass sounds pretty quiet on some laptops, for example. but i didn't really want to fiddle with it that much, because i dig the tone already. thanks again!

spitlogic said 154 days ago
very well done
the tempo works very nice and the music is full. Very ambient. Good work.

12parsecs said 152 days ago

thanks, mr logic! yeah, i like how warm and full this one turned out. cheers! (or should i say, baah weep grana weep ninnie bong.)

thanks for the comment. hehe, i get the sigur ros thing a lot. we must be related somehow, way back.

Amazing production!
Can you have "power ambient"?

Full and rich - this sounds like a great bed for someone with some serious pipes to put a vocal over. Nearly everything I'm listening to recently seems to have hints of "Life In A Northern Town" by the Dream Academy, and this is no exception.

There's a note of dissonance in the harmonies around 2:15 and again at 4:05 - probably a reaction to something in the synths. Not a problem, but its the biggest nit I can find ;)

Great bass and kit.

Top post!

Neil

dream cadet
yeah, i can see the dream academy connection. i don't own any of their cds, but i've certainly heard some of their tunes - esp life in a norhtern town. i dig their memorable, yet different progressions.

thanks for the kind words. and about the dissonants, it's entirely possible my fingers slipped while playing that arpeggiating patch on the microkorg... those keys are small! (and i didn't go back to fix any of it up... i just want to keep on adding tracks and not look back. :)

Vocals next?
Sounds perfect to my ears. I agree with previous post that some vocals could give the song a little more life. I fell like I'm floating in space. You have done a great job on the production of this song.

Another science related title - nice!

12parsecs said 152 days ago
vocals? hmmm...
i don't know about vocals. i might be content with this one being kinda musical/ambient. but i should try singing along with it in the car... ya never know.

and science related? oh yes! i'm a geek at heart. i find i can't write about science and other geeky things and pull it off convincingly. but i've declared open season on my song titles!

Not sure about vox now =)
I just listened to the song again. I liked the 5/4 time signature. Keyboard on 1 & 4 and snare on 3 & 5 really gives the time a seamless feel. I did notice what I perceived as a little blip (actually it was fine) when you came back in with drums. After saying "the summertime". I'd try adding an extra beat (6/4) or 3 (4/4x2) before the drums come back in at 1:45. Probably more trouble than its worth. It would be a pain to do in GB. I wish mixing time signatures was a little easier in GB.

12parsecs said 145 days ago
blip.
yeah, i noticed that too. never did before this latest mix. hmmm... i'll have to look into that. and the possibility of adding another beat in there. given that it's 5/4, though, it already seems like a long time to wait for that down beat, but it's worth some experimentation. it's not tough to do in cubase. thanks again for the comment!

thanks for the comment, karma! i had a lot of fun with this tune. my first one with the v-drums. i had a smile on my face for a week when i got them.

yep, i was going for that surroundy, dreamy, ambient feel on this one. a sound that envelopes you - well, as best it can. thanks for checking it out, yrp!

Char said 145 days ago
I think you are a genre all your own.
Space Music, the new frontier, where no other musician has gone before. Wailing or whaling guitars and sputnik pinging and voices so undecipherable it is as if they are speaking a different language or speaking in tongues: all of that along with a progression from a single starting point into infinity. Well, I was reminded of Sagan's book, and then the movie, Contact, with all the radio signals that came from outer space. WOW!!!
You know, I have seen your very generous comments to others, here. You deserve a lot of praise, yourself. Thanks.

12parsecs said 145 days ago
wow, thanks!
thank you very much for the praise, char. i try to comment about the positive points of one's song, yet still deliver some constructive criticism in addition.

space music/rock, i agree, should be a genre here. i'm not the only one braving this 'new frontier', though. check out rsorensen's stuff (and his Satellite Tragedy cd) and Springclock's stuff too. all top shelf space rock, imo.

funny you mention 'contact'. ok, i'm gonna show my uber-geekiness here, but that is probably one of my favourite movies - if not the favourite. sagan's a genius! i wasn't intending to invoke the feelings one would get watching contact, but if i managed to do that - that is reeeally cool! i guess i could see it with the wormhole and other worldly scenes.

great comment, thanks!

Very Well Done : )
12parsecs! This piece is really awesome! You've really outdone yourself for sure. Your electronics work well with your rock you have here along with the vocals. It has a really nice soft feel to it and is definitely a summer song for sure with memories passing by. I'm looking forward to your future works. Keep it up! :D

12parsecs said 141 days ago
cheers!
thanks kori! i was actually just using this as a placeholder, while i'm finishing up some of my 'future works'... i really liked it when i recorded it but grew tired of it... (i listened to it a lot at the time.) what i'm trying to say is that i'm really surprised and overwhelmed by the responses i'm getting on this tune. i appreciate your comment - and everyone who's checked this one out. cheers!

v-drums
I am toying with the idea of maybe thinking about v-drums and then I remember that I don't know how to drum. You always impress with your diversity of talent and a drummer too (they sound good).
Really enjoyed this listen and sorry I'm so late to it.
Cheers
Len
