Description Dedicated to my good friend, Jimmy Kennedy. Whether it's the canoe or that warp speed pro boat of yours that we're settin' in: it's all good, brother. It's all good.

I've redone this and the other 3 tunes that make up the Woodbury Suite. That's why I'm "re-posting" this little number.

A litttle piece of summer to carry with you, if you please...

Summery
sounds abounding Bob and as others have said, a great mood lifter, cheers M

guitapick said 155 days ago
You know...
...try as I might, I just haven't been able to write a sad song on this guitar. My nylon string pops 'em out like a toaster...but this guitar just won't sing in that direction.

Thanks for the listen, M

Perfect summer tune, Bob
and I really love the sound of your dobro. Sweet picking. :-)

guitapick said 155 days ago
Hi Roxy...
...yep...a summer song...

Jimmy does ice fishing, too...but he's a hardcore fisherman...

Trying to imagine what a Vermont Winter "Gone Fishin'" would sound like...

J.A.Stewart said 155 days ago
Okay, I'll Bite...
How loud is that National? How far from your mic do you record it?

Very cool piece, Bob. Reminds me a bit of some old ragtime tunes I've heard played on 12-string. Nice mood changes and well-played.

I hope they were biting for you. ;)

--- Joe

guitapick said 155 days ago
It is...
....v-e-r-y loud, Joe...Add the fingerpicks and it's off the charts.

They first developed the reso as a lead instrument that could cut above the rhythm, before amplifiers.

I love it...nice change of pace from the nylon string...

guitapick said 155 days ago
Oh...
...and the mic's about 8 inches from the guitar. I had it tilted a bit more towards the wood than the cone on this one. A bit of a deeper sound for the little fishies...

Doadars Uncle said 155 days ago
Fun!
And I've got a canoe just like that one!

I'm gone!

guitapick said 154 days ago
It's a...
...great canoe...I'll be paddling around in it in a week...so looking forward to it...

guitapick said 154 days ago

...maybe I'll get a gig somewhere in your vicinity, someday...

Thanks for your latest, too...

I
think this was one of the first songs that I commented on when I joined about a year ago.You have a beautiful touch on the guitar.A lot of people would just blaze on this all the way thru, but you are using dynamics and different articulations to make it interesting.Very nice recording and great composition.

guitapick said 154 days ago
The first recording...
...was about 12 years ago. I liked it, but regretted adding the compression and limiter.

This time around it's minus those two elements and, to my ear, allows for a lot more dynamic range. Even the mp3 you're hearing limits the peaks. I like the sound, but it's nicer on an AIFF and/or WAV.

Thanks, Mark. I really love "Bossa for Getz"...blow me away...

paul f. page said 154 days ago
I don't...
...know much about guitars, but this is sure a nice hill-billy sort of twangy thang that reminds me of that crazy scene in "Deliverance." Nice pickin', Bob. Sure lifts up one's spirits. I love it.
Peace.
Paul

guitapick said 154 days ago
Yep...
...twangy it is...with a touch of lute sound, on occasion...thanks for taking the time out to comment, Paul. I loved the soundtrack for "Deliverance"...

Skean said 154 days ago

Vic Holman said 153 days ago
boy....
...... that resonator really pops right out. some pretty intense finger picking. Hot enough that you want to jump into the water.

just a side question...... since I have never played one of these. Is this guitar more orientated to finger pick style or can you actually get a good sound from playing chords?

guitapick said 153 days ago
Funny you should ask...
...I'd never tried strumming it 'till you asked...sounds great...

It's mainly a solo instrument...but I've found it to be extremely versatile...now I'll be doing some strumming...thanks...

guitapick said 153 days ago
Hmm...
...now that I think of it, Bukka White strummed one of these. Famous blues artist. And I heard a guy at a club doing the same. Very powerful...so: "yeah"...you can definitely strum these guits...

RazorsKiss said 153 days ago
you have
captured the resonator nicely. on a production sidebar, i wanted some more dynamics with the mix. not sure how to go about it without the file, but the resonator has such a loud sound, you should be able to get a concussion from the beginning notes. great, no, fantastic performance.
jimmy page meets ry cooder. well written, i love the passage at 2:15. it was zep worthy. great post, and thanks for sharing this song with the community.
AD

guitapick said 153 days ago
I know what you mean...
...about the dynamics. It's why I redid it from the original one, which used both compression and limiter.

The mp3, itself, is a (if not THE) culprit, here. The AIFF and WAV files have more dynamic range...noticeably so, to my ear.

Thanks for the listen and taking the time out to comment...

Bob

guitapick said 152 days ago
and, btw:
Love Ry Cooder...and J. Page is and was a great, great, great acoustic player. One of my biggest influences...

jiguma said 152 days ago
Shades of ..
.. Leo Kottke. Sure sounds like more than 6 strings somehow. Bob, I've been kind of caught up in voting and commenting and have been finding it hard to get beyond the rating picks and a few others. Glad I found this in the "Fan Picks" list. Just a gentle summer song - I suspect I'd enjoy it even more if we had an extra 15 degrees on board at the moment, but at least everyone else is having summer.

A great "front porch" kind of tune - love it.

Neil

guitapick said 152 days ago
Yeah...
...it ain't exactly "summer", down under, at the moment...is it?

Well...you can put it on your iPod and pull it out in a few months, if you like...

I'm glad you liked this, Neil...enjoy the day, man...

guitapick said 152 days ago
BTW
...I know what you mean. I've been trying to figure out why it sounds like more than a 6 stringer (sounds like we're talkin' firearms, here).

I figure it's about the volume/sustain from the aluminum cone combined with the fact that, using open G tuning, I like to use octaves in and out of the tune. Easy to hit those octaves in G...just form an A7 chord on any of the four bass strings.

Life is but a dream. Nice acoustic piece. remnant of Page in parts. Great tribute to your friends past time. Those hand built canoes are nice.

guitapick said 152 days ago
Ain't Page...
...off the charts? I love his stuff...

It's a nice canoe, man. I'll be paddling around in it in a few days. Yeehawwww!

You should see Jimmy's pro bass boat. Sponsored. Moves very, very, very fast from place to place on those big lakes/rivers.

Thanks..."merrily, merrily", it is....

Wonderful!
This exudes good feeling! I love it. And the title is perfect!

I also love the sound you get with that guitar%u2026 I want one! You're a fabulous guitarist... I could listen to this stuff all day.

Wonderful music!

guitapick said 151 days ago
Thanks, Clark...
...you know; the one you're hearing here is an older re-issue model. The new ones look like this...:

http://www.nationalguitars.com/rtb2.jpg

...and will run you into some buckaroos.

But, if you look around and find one of these (note the art deco headstock)...:

http://www.digimart.net/images/1940/DS00378785.jpg

or this (I took this shot at the place I wrote this tune)...:

http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k92/guitapick/Radiotone.jpg

...you can sometimes find a deal. I saw one for sale on eBay for $400.00, a couple of years ago. They are GREAT guitars, Clark. Play close to the neck and they're almost lute like (esp. without fingerpicks). And near the bridge puts you in country heaven. And they take to either slide or fingering beautifully.

"That'll be the way to get along...."
Reminds me of that cascading descent from 'Prodigal Son' that Leo Kottke picked up for one of his tunes...

Quite a big sound, but you're keeping it contained...even without the compression, it doesn't sound like it's too much...

I was looking at Johnson resonator guitar at one point, but when they got a new one in it was all set up with the high action for slide... Oh well...Resonator guitars are so good for playing 'Lola'...

Good and sprightly and driving...

Ed

guitapick said 150 days ago
Regarding...
...the action:

I saved this tune for last, when I recorded the Woodbury Suite over, again. Figured I'd be "warmed up" by then.

What I DIDN'T figure was that I'd been playing nylon string exclusively for months, previous to this. Soooo...moving over to that high action (you CAN finger it...but it ain't easy) was pretty jarring. By the time I reached this tune, I'd developed a blister on my middle finger. It made for a rolicking good time, Ed...

Show must go on, though...and I put myself into it...and I was happy with how it came out.

Glad you like it, too...

...sir knight...quite an outfit you've got there...that you made it is even more impressive.

I've got a good friend who's a professional photographer. He was down in Puebla and took an absolutely stunning black and white shot of a boy on a mule, out in the desert, ambling towards the sunrise.

I'm looking at it right now...

Looking forward to giving your sounds a listen...thanks, again.

I'm a fan of your daughter's. "Mommy" is a wonderful tune ("kids have such clear minds") ;) and I love her avatar (I'm big time into stuffed animals...can still remember my lion with the glow in the dark eyes) (I kept a bunch that Ava was giving away, too).

Very cool that she remembers me...please give my regards...

As always: looking forward to your next, Tim...enjoy the summer, man.
