Keywords fuzz makes me feel all warm inside (1)fuzzy wuzzey was a bear (1)
Description I was working on a Feter cover, and decided to go in a completely different direction (the song lends itself to a million different interpretations). So seeing as how I am not going to use this for the MJ covers challenge, decided I would post it. Did I mention that I think my new direction when I have writers block is to cover the entire MJ catalog? No? Well, yeah; I was thinking about it. Watch out, you're next. Feter gave permission, don't worry.

Now the prelims: I won't call them disclaimers, just a friendly warning. If you don't like massive amounts of fuzz, distortion, feedback, dissonance and buried vocals, then you will probably hate this. I think it sounds pretty cool when you crank it up on regular speakers. There is only 1 guitar in this, the bulk of what you're hearing is a bass track that I cut up and processed to death and a string section put through some fuzz and delay. The other version I did of this song is more "pretty," but I really like playing and listening to stuff like this. If you think it sounds like noise, I won't be insulted; but it's the way I wanted it to sound.

here is the link to Feters original, which is a beautiful folk song:

I think
someone has taken up where My Bloody Valentine left off. Has all the elements for sure. Big thumbs up from me.

I still need to figure what to cover myself

michael2 said 158 days ago
yeah
there is a heavy MBV influence on this one ( as well as some other noisey stuff i really like). I settled on another version, but didn't want this one to go to waste. I only hope that Feter can get into it, since it's such a weird take on his song. Thanks Vic.

guygrooves said 158 days ago
Noise???
Only of the very best kind. This is absolutely awesome. I have no comments as to how this could be better (buried vox and all lol). I listened to it on my monitors and it sounds perfect. Loved every second of it!!

guygrooves said 158 days ago
Feter
What a great song man!! I'm off to hear your version of it now.

michael2 said 158 days ago
thanks
guygrooves, really glad that you liked this one, I think Feter wrote a really great song, and was just interested in how it would sound in a completely different context. thanks for the listen and the comments.

egobandit said 158 days ago

I like what you did to feter's song. Ya know It sounds like you use allot of crystal , I have been experimenting allot with it lately . Very creep rendition but I like that, Excellent I always enjoy your singing!

michael2 said 158 days ago
thanks Tim
I hope you're talking about the soft synth and not the stuff sold by bikers. actually Crystal stopped working on my computer months ago when i upgraded my OS. that noise is the strings from GB with a lot of distortion on them. i wish I could get that synth to work again. BTW loved your new one.

peacepiano said 158 days ago
Fuzz
Cool sound. Not sure where the distorted guitars end and the fuzzy orchestra begins but it all provides a rocking background for your vocals.

Thanks
Bill

michael2 said 158 days ago
thanks man
there are actually no distorted gtrs, just one clean Fender Twin sounding one. the rest is bass that I manipulated and distorted and a track of the strings with fuzz. thanks so much for listening.

rsorensen said 158 days ago
fuzz
Oh man. I'm on an iphone right now so I can't listen but this sounds like it's going to be something I'm gonna love. Can't wait to get home. I'll be back.

rsorensen said 158 days ago
mm-hmm
as I suspected, I love this. excellent. this actually has kind of a Vic Holman sound to it. really great job with the drums. boom boom bap bap duggaduggaduggadugga - what an awesome fill. love the constant dizzy distortion in the background. great vocals and harmonies as usual as well. Don't know how you can top this version with another one, but I'm looking forward to hearing it. To me this different take on the original is what covers are all about, or should be anyway. I'm positive Feter will be stoked.

michael2 said 157 days ago
thanks Ridd
you know, a cover I always loved was Failure doing the cars "just what I needed" or The Melvins (also doing the Cars)'Candy O." thanks a bunch for listening.

Michael, this is TRES COOL! Where, but in the brain of Michael2, could this idea exist??

michael2 said 156 days ago
thanks
so much. i had a lot of fun working on this one, Feters original is such a beautiful song.

Lennon714 said 158 days ago
This
is great because:
a) It motivates me to get crankin' on my cover for the challenge
b) It's a great song.

I'm curious, are you still building your drums out of midi? They sounded great and certainly didn't sound like the copy/paste job I normally do on Midi drums.

michael2 said 156 days ago
thanks lennon714
glad you're inspired, I know you're going to do something great. these weren't MIDI drums, I used drums on demand as I wanted to just crank this one out quickly. on the other version I did, there are midi drums though. I need to get the full version of addictive drums if i'm serious about programming drums. thanks for listening.

biba_nova said 158 days ago
Nice one
Sounds as good listening in a house in the English countryside as it probably would sitting in my house in Scottsdale Arizona

Love the wailing, bending notes in the background

Curious - you asked me what I used to make my drum sounds recently. What do you use? You always seem to get a nice loose feel that has an almost live quality to it

b

michael2 said 156 days ago
hey Bryn
thanks for taking time out of your trip to listen to my new post. for drums on this I used Drums on Demand; although sometimes I will do the MIDI thing with the drum sets from the GB jampacks. usually they are not straight drum patterns as I am still working on getting that down. I am trying really hard to get better at that though. Thanks so much for your listen and comment.

Great sound
and song. I like where you have taken this, nice trippy guitar soundz.

cjdaley said 158 days ago
I am a fan
of that sort of fuzzy-wooly sound, both abrasive and soft (as such this sentence has no sense but you HEAR what I mean) I think it fits your vocal style perfectly.

mowguy3 said 158 days ago
All I can say
is "please sir may I have some more?" Fantastic job covering this work by Feter. Now to take another listen to the original.
Thanks, Russ

I'm silly
I've laugh like a demon when I told my wife about my problem w/headphones and this comment "LATER TODAY" it should been before today... OKAY! great post as always my friend...hahahaha

thoddi said 157 days ago
sounding good
The background noise gives me a feeling of war sirens. To me they get a bit to much after a while... and in the way of your great singing and the good groove you have made for the song... Think i'd prefer to have them come in and out of the mix... But thats a matter of taste of course.

lavalamp said 157 days ago
Michael 2
You made this into a kinda' Bowie's "Heroes" vibe, which I truly dig. Cool disclaimer and a very cool cure for writer's block.

Love the
song, mix, distortion and vocals.
Cheers

jiguma said 157 days ago
I expected ..
.. after reading about the fuzz. distortion etc in your intro, that I wouldn't like this. BUT no amount of said distortion could cover the beautiful melody and harmonies. I haven't heard MBV, but if this is similar, I'll probably like them.

I suppose the distortion did start to grate after a few verses (but I AM and old guy!), but a really creative take on Feter's original.

Cheers,
Neil

This it works well and certainly is different from what Feter might do, but that makes it exciting to listen to, I hope Feter likes your unusual take...I do...

Letter of a Heart (by Feter) by michael2
Nice job, the vocals need to be a bit louder however. Cool sound, the distorted guitars really add to it. Nice work on the mixing & keeping a theme to the song!
As usual, you csn always suspect something great where Feter is involved. I'd like to hear you both collab more, you've got a good thing going here!

five_extra_arms said 156 days ago
There Wuz Fuzz
and a light show to go with it.

Killer bass sounds Michael and your ever so perfect slow harmonizing vocals. Great use of distortion without overblowing everything. Wish I could figure that out for my songs.

Thanks for the download.

michael2 said 156 days ago
thanks
5EARMS, glad you like. the fuzz was sounding weird when i used guitars, so i just used a bass track with a fuzzbox freebie i found online. sounded so nice, i started slicing it up and adding other effects for some of that background noise. i may abandon the guitar altogether. thanks for listening.

I like it .....
... I think the most fun about covers is that you swap it up as much as possible without losing the original integrity of the song so as to make it unrecognizable - but also making it a whole new listening experience ... you did that on this one for sure.

Magic to my ears
I'm so jealous - I wanna be MBV. This is so good my ears are smiling. I love distortion - fuzz - and feedback - and paired with your voice it's a great combination. Cheers to you and Feter - great collab!

Ibstrat said 155 days ago
I'm
not sure what your influences are(favorite bands, etc.) but it sounds to me that you like the same kind of rock & roll that I do.Your drum sounds are really authentic- don't know if you play drums but it sounds like it.I'm never disappointed when I check out one of your songs.I have to listen to the original now- great job.
