Description Although I played most (if not all) of the guitar and bass, this idea was primarily Blake's. (I helped with the bridge and contributed some solo/lead line ideas.) Blake did a fantastic job drumming... practising only on air drums or in other bands he was singing in (until the drummer told him to get the hell of the kit. :) It required minimal tightening.

It turned out alright, I say at the risk of sounding immodest. The surprising part is, though, that Blake writes most of his stuff in his head. He routinely comes up with multi-part melodies while at work, or wherever. I don't know how he does it. He has a unique knack for arranging many parts and remembering them - without the aid of an instrument. I have trouble remembering a monophonic melody for more than 10 minutes.

Anyway, that's already too much sunshine pumped in his direction. :) Listen, enjoy, comment! Cheers!

This was meant to fall apart.
Good song; really good lyrics. Complex music and elegant construction. Thank You, guys.

TheMeaningOfLife said 158 days ago
thanks!
thank you for the nice comment! i spent a fair amount of time mixing this one and i think it was worth it. the lyrics were all blake's doing. i think he might have wrote them the day before or of. i know he was finishing the ending when he showed up to record them. :)

This collab team is awesome! Isn't it interesting, the very different ways that different musicians write music? Great song guys - vocals, guitar, bass, drums - the whole production is terrific!

TheMeaningOfLife said 158 days ago
teamwork.
yeah, sometimes two heads are better than one. it is indeed interesting how different people approach writing music. there can be challenges trying to communicate your ideas to someone else, but it's often well worth the effort. thanks for the comment!

pun alert below...
so, the 'hook' 'grabbed' you, did it? sorry, truly bad pun. thanks for your kind words. yes, check back often... more to come, i'm sure. cheers!

whoa
sounds great, dude. you guys have always worked really well together and this is solid proof. choice lyrics and vocals here. and all things sonic from 2:32 on really stirred up something good inside me. the overlapping vox work really well now. Great stuff. a new fave for me from you guys. thanks for the DL.

TheMeaningOfLife said 158 days ago
you're welcome!
thanks for the comment! and a special thanks for letting me bounce an earlier version of this off you before i posted it. (i meant mention that in the song description, but got carried away stroking blake's ego, it would seem.) i tried some new mastering tools on this version... but i still might be pushing it a little too loud.

thanks, nick! certainly, keep checking back. i agree, good job by blake on the vox. he's pretty pro with the singing. (wish i could sing that well.)

Great tune. Just love that image did you make that? Really enjoyed this ride, beautiful music with everything sounding top notch. Expansive guitar work and overall a well crafted song indeed. Cheers for that.

Clean air
Very good playing, singing etc. Production sounds pro - you don't mention the gear you use to record - if it's a home studio, then you've achieved pretty amazing results.

I like this more than "Bionic Arm" - seems like there's more "air" in the mix, and Blake's vocal isn't muddied by the instrumentation - great vocal btw.

A very classy piece of work!

home studio, well sort of...
thanks for the comment again, neil! i've actually built a project studio in my apartment. since it's an apartment, it's not conducive to live drums, loud amps, or loud anything really. but it's fine for v-drums, vocals, and DI overdubs. my gear is portable, so i sometimes go on site to record, but i do all my mixing and mastering here at home. and i sometimes do music and foley for picture.

so, in answer to your question, it was kinda done in a studio by a kinda professional. :) this one we recorded all here over the course of two days (spread a month or so apart). then i took a day (8 hours or so) to mix and master it. that's what you're hearing - just time invested into a mix (plus lots of great uad1 plugins). i was trying out a new limiter plugin for the mastering stage, so (while i like how it turned out) i think i could still do better.

i was thinking about 'putting it out there' that anyone who wanted to have their song 'professionally' mixed or mastered (or have me play drums, guitar, bass, whatever) can contact me, but i figure soliciting like that might be frowned upon. so i haven't. but if, out of curiosity, anyone wants to check out my site - it's www.westwoodsound.ca. it's got pics. i recorded/mixed/produced an album for another mjer who lives in town. i think it turned out great (but that has a lot to do with this person's talent).

This did come out very well. You two sound like a five piece band playing all together. Great sound!!

Thanks
Bill

peace!
thanks for the comment, bill. yeah, just the two of us recorded over and over. all in, including fx channels, i think this one had 61 tracks. overkill? heck yes. :)

peacepiano said 152 days ago
61 Tracks
That is a lot of tracks. I've put up a few with, gasp, one single track. I can't imagine 61.

12parsecs said 152 days ago
1 tracker
i've got a 1-tracker (just guitar) that i should put up. i like it, and it would go a ways to show i'm not just a one trick pony. (or 61 trick pony, as the case may be. :)

thanks again, bill!

dang, wrong identity. anyway, on behalf of TMOL, thanks again bill. :)
