Piano disruption

Thank you very much .
This is a great track to jam with .
I'll try a better mix .

splinter said 161 days ago
Excellent jamming
you really brought a different perspective to the piece. Love the free stylings and tone of your piano. Thanks for jumping on board. Welcome to Splinter.

It 's been great to play over your sounds .

The casting

Thank you very much .

I am
always amazed at your improvisational prowess. I'd be interested to know what you are thinking when you play that "outside" stuff. The vamp is E7, but are you playing like chromatic 4th voicings with your left hand then just playing by ear or thinking 1/2 step up... anyway it sounds great!

Ibstrat said 161 days ago
I forgot
to mention that the backing track is awesome.

HenriROGERsoloandbands said 161 days ago
Thinking
Thank you .

I take E7 as the root tone .
I try modes over it, like E phrygian , Em penta .
But these modes stay quite inside the root tone .
So, I try various ways to get out .
Left hand playing 4ths or 13th chords :
C7sus4 > E7sus4>Ab7sus4
Right hand staying on Em penta or E blues .
More out :
LH Ab13 RH D altered scale
LH B13 RH F altered scale
LH D13 RH Ab altered scale
LH F13 Rh G altered scale

Then I play around all these , building phrases , staying in the
flow of the backing track rythm .

Ibstrat said 160 days ago
Thanks
for the info. I find it interesting that you relate everything to an altered scale instead of lydian b7.(D alt same as Ab lydian b7)The roots you are playing from are apart by minor 3rds- did you just start from F (1/2 step up) and build up a diminished arpeggio? Thanks again.

HenriROGERsoloandbands said 159 days ago
Thirds

Yes it's moving by thirds .
I build the 13th chords from their major third .

This brings up the C 7dim chord wich is in the Em harmonic
scale.

The root tone is not too far :-)

Wild
This is really cool. It has a wild trippy feel to it - makes me think of Tom Waits in a way, which is a good thing in my book - and the whole thing hangs together so well it sounds like you guys are jamming! Great musicianship and terrific track. Very cool. Peace.

Thank you very much .

Improv
Your improv works well with the "Splinters"
On the recording side, the piano is very "close" and the groove is "far", maybe a different reverb setting for the piano track would put you and the rhythm section closer.
The chords and scales you find to work with this are just amazing. Great work.

Thanks
Bill

Reverb

Thank you very much .
Do you mean a longer reverb ?
I think I can reduce the piano level until it stays clear in the mix.

peacepiano said 159 days ago
Reverb
A little lower volume and probably a little longer reverb time would do it. I use the presets a lot still, so I am trying to picture how the different settings will effect "where" the piano is. The lower volume should put it a little farther away, with the other instruments, and the the longer reverb time will make it sound like you recorded in a bigger room, which I think Bud and Co. did.

Your Piano playing is awsome. Great track. I liked it.
I am trying to learn the piano at the moment.

Thank you , much appreciated .

Something different
for sure. I really like the piece it is very cool. You're improvisational skills are deep. The discussion about reverb is something you might want to look into further I agree with peacepiano a longer reverb and a small reduction in volume on your piano would make it sound like you guys were all in the same room. I am really dig the piano in this, it is a truly inspirational collab. Thanks for sharing.

Reverb

Thank you very much .
I'm going to try different levels for the reverb and piano .

Wow!!!
No advice from me, Just some great playing by all. My mom was a Jazz fan and loved to listen to the B sides, the more improv stuff. Not that this is a B side at all, just took me back in time a little.
Thanks, and be well, Russ
