Keywords Tokyo (10)Casio (5)Space Helmet (1)Telephone Booth (3)
Description My local friend and rockstar Carlo and I actually got together in the same room and worked on this song. His girlfriend shouts a perfect batch of "Tokyo - Tokyo"s through out this reconfiguration of an old idea that we've revisited, abandoned and reconstructed entirely from the ground up. The only thing recognizable from the original version is the single word "Tokyo".

I have missed my time here at Macjams and I hope to be able to get back into the groove again. Please let us know what you think of this new song. Carlo sings and plays guitar and I play my black and scratchy and add unnecessary electronic noises that irritate.

Thanks,

Cool Rockin'
Thanks for listening Feter. You always take the time to hear my songs and I greatly appreciate it.

true indie!
nicely done. the vocals are awesome! (bgs included. and not just the 'awesome' thrown around everywhere, i mean v cool and sincere awesome.) very sparse mix which is totally working.

also digging the guitar tone. it's almost as if:
'hey, you guys seen my microphone anywhere?'
'no dood'
'crap!'
'i'll betcha we could wire that old telephone receiver into your mac.'

five_extra_arms said 115 days ago
Unfair Advantage
It's obvious you've seen our studio.

I might have to post an image of the guitar set up.... you're close, real close!

Vic Holman said 115 days ago
excellent stuff
well I can imagine you locking the office door and putting up matteresses to block out the noises of the employees pounding on the door. And yanking the phone from the wall jack.

Great treatment of the synths and percussion. Great to hear this come to full realization.

five_extra_arms said 114 days ago
Close, but not exactly....
I pushed my employees up against the wall so I wouldn't hear the mattress.

Our production has improved quite a bit since we quit faxing our tracks back and forth.

Thanks Vic!

I've been to Tokyo, and it just sounds like this. I like The energy of it, be it the thin and barbed-wired rythm guitar sound or in the vocal delivery and I think the mix of drums and crude drum machine -the 909?- with those perfect handclaps really does it. My favorite telephone booth song so far.

five_extra_arms said 114 days ago
Handclaps
Tokyo One was the first song Carlo and I wrote together, so rewriting this with the same approach as we did in 1999 was a thrill. It's great that he abandoned every element of the original song. I was hesitant to dismiss what I thought was my best bass line ever, but in the end, I too think this could possibly be our best song POSTED here. You'll have to wait and see what else has been sitting in the corner of my hard drive.

Regarding the drums - I'm pretty sure you're correct about the 909. It's a hard sound for me to avoid. We also used (from Jam Pack 1) Analog Drum Machine 05 and 06, for those with the same addiction.

Thanks cj - I had hoped you'd like this song.

30 seconds/ 8-bit over tokyo
"life in Tokyo" can be difficult, as they used to say, but you survived it.

any song with tokyo in the title does it for me, so I'm not objective.

Tokyo Tunes
Hey motormouth,

Let's clab on a Tokyo Tune. You have some great electro sounds that say Tokyo in any language.

What does that mean?

rsorensen said 115 days ago
Tokyo 1
dude this is awesome. love the warm mix and the vox are fantastic. those 'electronic noises' ARE necessary and bring a lot to the song. Great 80s punk sound. More to come? I hope so!

Songs From The Telephone Booth
I love to hear Carlo sing and I very much enjoyed building this track alongside him (for the most part). I like passing files back and forth, because of my difficult schedule, but there is nothing like feeding off each other in the same room and making things happen. He has some tiny plastic amp that we mic'ed to get that perfect guitar sound and we somehow managed to capture the sound of the room in this version.

Thanks for listening.

Electro (Punk) Rock
what a young, fresh production and a bright comeback, Bob! Everything's well placed from Carlo's vox to your irritating noises. I'd really like to hear more from that combo.

Keep it up.
alex

Motormouth
Thanks Alex. I'm sure there will be more posted soon.

Are you motormouth?

Just curious, as I saw a recent forum post accusing you.

alexweiler said 114 days ago

hey bob! No, its not me (accusing myself?). But I'll take a look at the forum post ...

take care,
alex

Great to have you back Bob
You've been missed.
You two really do fit together perfectly. This works perfectly especially like the percussion.
Cheers
Len

five_extra_arms said 114 days ago
Beats Me!
You Like Percussion? What a surprise! Thanks len, you are one of the kings of percussion in my book.

Your electrofriend,

Bob

damnit
I just wrote a brilliantly worded appraisal of this badass tune (that included a reference to Japanese translations and the movie You've Got Mail). But I screwed something up. Anyway...

LOVE this. The stomp/clap thing is a big favorite of mine. The lyrics are disjointed and fantastic. You've got to bring Telephone Booth out to AZ.

five_extra_arms said 114 days ago
Disjointed and Fantastic
This is the phrase I'll use to describe our sound.

Thanks man. If I can get the bus running better, we'll load up the kids and drive out to AZ for a show and put you on the crowded guest list.

Thanks for listening.

Micheal_Wark said 115 days ago
Big fun!
Wow...It's good to have you back Bob!

You guys achieve a definite 80's punk feel here.

Energetic delivery. Good mixing...

Be well!

80's Punk Feel
We worked hard on this song, so I appreciate the feedback on production. We did our best and happy to post another song soon.

having a new tune from you - killer guitar sound - can't think of anything I'd change...

Killer Guitar Sound
We did have some fun manufacturing that guitar sound. If there is such thing as a Tonka Guitar amp, I think this is what it would sound like!

Ballsy, but friendly and no sharp edges.

Micheal_Wark said 113 days ago
Ha ha...
I think I might have owned a Tonka Guitar Amp when I was a kid. It didn't get played with much because I didn't know what an Amp was...

Its like a fix very cool drums on this! Did I get to see the live acoustic version ? mMy memory is gone downloaded for prosperity!!!!!!!!

five_extra_arms said 114 days ago
Live Show @ Dead Reckoning
Tim,

you have a great memory. Carlo and I hacked this song to pieces on our caustic acoustic set at the first Dead Reckoning. I timed it perfectly at the end of the night so I could sneak out the back door while Carlo was signing autographs. I'm glad you heard both versions. I wanted to record the acoustic version for the MJ Coffeeshop show, but that never happened. I guess I didn't have the 20 minutes it would've taken to record the song and post it.

Thanks man!

bud said 114 days ago

perfect production on this baby - a fully happening blast of pop punk electro disco fun. Youv'e been missed - but this was worth waiting for.

Telephone Booth
There's magic in the Telephone Booth and this particular track seemed proof to my ears. I'm just happy that anyone else likes it!

Thanks for the warm welcome back, bud. I really miss my time here.

perfection. so good. i have no constructive criticism except you should post more often. there is so much to like in this, i don't even know where to begin. veeeery cool. wish i had an indie label right now.

Old Indie Wannabes
Michael, thanks for the feedback. 10 years ago Carlo and I had about 3 or 4 people that liked our songs, and maybe 1 or 2 of them understood what we were after. It's a real treat for both of us to get any kind of feedback on our music, especially complimentary. There are quite a few of you here that really get it and that's about as good as it gets for us.

We have a few songs in the works and we're enthusiastic about finishing them and posting them.

Thanks again to everyone for listening and encouraging us.

:-] very cool

RazorsKiss said 112 days ago
well,
here are some of the things i liked about it;
i liked it for the no nonsense approach to straight forward indie rock and roll. if this had more rock, it would be gravel.
you very nearly have written a song by the vapors. kind of punk, and anarchistitc in the vocal delivery, and your singer is quite good. now on to the wish there was more department.
i want more of this music. you are very good at this genre. i have the utmost faith in your abilities, and they seem to shine brightest when doing this style of music.

thank you for the post.
it is always great and exciting when i see a new post next to your name.

Fun, fun, fun! I had a casio keyboard that made that same wacky sound. Takes me back to my 4-track days. Glad to see you back at it Bob!

Tokyo One (Telephone Booth) by five_extra_arms
Nicely done! Like the 80's retro sound, the guitar tone really adds to it. Vocals are just perfect for this tune!

The Infinites said 108 days ago
I'd like to see you guys live...
...and who knows it could happen!

Coolest sounds - fresh from the 80s. It's all good fun and is the kind of stuff I like to hear on a loud system in a club/pub.

Great ending with the double crash.

DL'd of course
