Description a song about indecision, I think.

a side note what may sound like synth tracks at the beginning and at a break later in the song are a lot of guitar harmonic notes on infinant delay repeat and brought in with a volume pedal. kind of a alternative to a real e-bow.
Lyrics Waiting For The Grass To Grow

i feel there's a place out there
what you say what you dare
i feel the time will come
people will get along

ch;
and i'm waiting for the grass to grow under my feet

not sure of what's all that true
i really haven't a clue
to many say they know the answer
but i'm not sure if that's true
children's eyes see all hope
growing up learning to cope

ch:
and i'm waiting for the grass to grow under my feet

that girl has got a lot lot
this boy is a have not
that girl can't do without
this boy carries has some doubt
that girl wants expensive things
this boy buys salvation army

ch:
and i'm waiting for the grass to grow under my feet

fool me for not paying attention
could you give me an extension
another day goes right by me
when i'm lost in my dreamland
the blame and the claims
almost insane confuses me

ch:
and i'm waiting for the grass to grow under my feet

i'm waiting on the sideline
waiting for the world to decide
still i hear accusations fly
without a compromise

ch:
and i'm waiting for the grass to grow under my feet
and i'm waiting for the grass to grow under my feet

Cool tune ..
.. and I notice a new style VH song-art direction.

Nice balance, playing, singing, writing and excellent production. Extremely small nit (had to search for it!) is that I'd like to hear the acoustic/s a little stronger in the mix - mainly because it sounds so good.

Cheers,
Neil

Vic Holman said 163 days ago
Thanks Neil
Originally when I added the acoustics, I was just filling in to smooth it out some. So now you have me thinking. I can lower the rhythm electrics and bring up the acoustics in places. I might play around with one some more.

RazorsKiss said 164 days ago
well, vic
this type of song suits your vocal style very well. nice, smooth, ELO esque, pop thang. i loved the production, the snare sound reminded me of the Maggie May sessions. digitech, huh? good chorusing, to be sure. nice, melodic, solo, went well with the roving rhtythm. overall, if i were to vote, this would be an honest, solid 8. it has a classic rock feel, with a british nod.

Vic Holman said 163 days ago
Thanks Allen
the music was the easy part. It took me some considerable time to figure the lyrics and approaching it vocally. I figured best to be a bit mellow. The drums I was playing around with the EQ and found a nice spot with a sharp attack. There's a lot of multi processors out there. But I like Digitech, Even has a whammy pedal mode and a real talk box through a mike input. have yet to use on a recording yet though.

Grass Under My Feet
the first thing grab me to this song ..the crystal
clear mixing ...new mood here from you Vic on keys
and Guitar .just so special and cool ...right then
bro ...YOU ROCK .thnx for sharin !!!!

Vic Holman said 163 days ago
thanks Feter
I kept most of the guitar tracks very clean. I was hoping it would have a bit of a sparkling sound to most it. Especially since my vocal tends to sound dirty. Not fowl language, just the timbre. :)

said 164 days ago
Ha ha...
Only YOU would devise a way to synthesize a synthesizer Vic! If you hadn't informed us beforehand, I would never had guessed those were harmonic guitar tracks. A bold and successful experiment bro!

A lovely pop-rock tune. I am especially fond of the chorus. Very well sung. The lead solo is vintage Vicar. The bass track is fat and strong and drives things along nicely.

Damn it! I'm trying my level best here NOT to "blow sunshine," but I simply cannot find fault with this song. (Apologies all around to the League of GLOOMY GUSes!)

Nice one my friend!

Be well!

Vic Holman said 163 days ago
Thanks Mike
I have to presets for the drone sound one clean, one distorted. just a lot of notes and artificial harmonics brought in with the volume pedal. you can also put in notes that start bouncing all over the place and really build it up into a cacaphony.

I was a bit meticulous on the vocals. I dumped three versions before this last one. wasn't sure if I was going to hit the high notes on the chorus. whew.

said 163 days ago
Ha!
We're gettin' old bro!

I know what you mean re the "high" vocals. When I remastered "Sally" I tried to re-sing the rock vocal parts, but kept falling short. I finally gave up and just tweaked the original vocals. GEEZ man...It's only been two years, and even back then we had to lower the key of "House" so that we could sing it!

Well, you seem to have nailed the final take. Your chorus vocals sound as natural to these ears as the rest of the song.

Good job!

Relic67 said 164 days ago
love it!
nice melodies, great production and execution all round.
It reminded me slightly of a band I haven't heard for ages, Aztec Camera.
Obligatory nitpick: Song could use a bridge! :)

Vic Holman said 163 days ago
Aztec Camera
man, I had forgotten all about them. that has been some time.

regarding the bridge, I originally intended to make the section were the guitar solo as a bridge. I didn't have words and so I made one pass with the solo guitar and kinda liked it so I kept that in.

I really appreciate the listen!

rsorensen said 164 days ago
greatness
another classic holman. have i ever told you how much I love your sound? Great mix and those are really cool guitar tones you've wrangled. Nice dreamy chorus and I love that Japanese flavored solo. This will be a great summer song for me. Only thing I would've liked is a slower fade at the end. I think it would suit the vibe of the song better. But that's just a personal preference thing. Great song vic!

Vic Holman said 163 days ago
Thanks Ridd
highly appreciated on my end. Luckily I didn't have to mess around with the guitar tones. I select what I need externally. So, when I'm adding a new track I know immediately where I'm at. So, all the music tracks wher done In a matter of a few hours.

I thought, when I was recording the end that i had enough space to work with. When I set the fade I realized it was going to be shorter then intended.

MarkHolbrook said 164 days ago
I especially
love the vocals on this one Vic. Once again another awesome creation!

Vic Holman said 163 days ago
Thanks Mark
the funny thing is I was really considering to have someone else do the vocals.
Plus, I went through 3 different sets of lyrics. When I couldn't decide what I really wanted that actually sparked the idea with what I came up with in the end.

MarkHolbrook said 159 days ago
Well VH...
The song IS about indecision right!? :)

blaky smith said 164 days ago
I am
in ecstasy in front of your collection of music toys, which I discover today on your homepage !
This new tune sounds good Vic, another attractive well made work, in any point of view, with a lot of originality in the creation and as usual a perfect harmony between your music and your voice, Bravo... et Merci !
Marc

Vic Holman said 163 days ago
Thanks Marc
There are more toys that were not in the pictures. several more guitars and a lot of effect pedals.

the music came to me pretty fast one night of just goofing around on a acoustic. I was able to record the tracks in a afternoon. But it took a couple of weeks for me to get something going for lyrics and vocals.

lengold said 164 days ago
Lovely flowing
chord progressions. Excellent lyrics and I think the bass needs special mention. Your vocals are sounding great. Love the chorus. I can't find anything to criticise - which is good 'cause I don't want to.
Cheers
Len

Vic Holman said 163 days ago
Thanks Len
the verse section is nothing but variation in C. So, I kept most parts pretty simple and doing something a little different. I punched up the mids on the bass so it would really stand out. I really liked the sound of it myself as well.

thoddi said 164 days ago
after the fire
Guess you've found some inspiration to the chorus from your last song...

Had a look at your profile page and all your toys... Cool:)

Your song has that classic VH sound. Tight and good!

Vic Holman said 162 days ago
Thanks Thor
I've been picking up those toys as time goes along. There are a few i have at work that didn't get in.

The fire around here has settled. I started this immediately after the last one, but sat around for a while before I could come up with some lyrics.

Skean said 163 days ago

Vic
you are so talented my friend. This is a great song. I too am trying very hard not to blow to much sunshine, but with your stuff it's very hard not to lol.
I do have two personal taste observations to make though.. so here goes... 1. Your vocal isn't on top of the mix it is just "in" it in places, it also has a touch too much reverb for my taste (vocal only). 2. Personally I found the tone of the lead guitar to be harsh, and sorta out of place with the whole texture of the song.
These are personal observations only, and the over all production of this is something I hope to be able to aspire to one day. Brother you are one talented dude. Thanks for a great song and for the download.
Guy

Vic Holman said 162 days ago
Thanks Guy
True a tune can be mixed a million ways.

Usually when I do a mp3 bounce I do 4 versions with different vocal levels. One was more on top but sounded a bit over. I could bring the reverb back I'm sure. I'll probably will do a different remix to see what differences can come about.

I appreciate your thoughts!

Couldn't wait to get to this one Vic! Love the vox, and whatever the heck you did with the guitar in here is quite amazing. Your music never disappoints!

Vic Holman said 162 days ago
Thanks Karen
the music was pretty decisive. I came up with the tune in a evening and recorded the music in a afternoon. the lyrics and vocal was the indecisive part and took a couple weeks to get something going.

Thanks and I appreciate the listen!

is great Vic, love your fake synth. you know I would have played synth for you, but i;m pretty sure you enjoyed holing up and tweaking on that for as long as it took. love the sounds, chorus, and the lyrics and melodies. i do agree with Ridd though. You should make the ending longer; like really long with sound and solo's and big drum fills. .like you would probably play it live. it's a little bit of a tease right now. really, really nice song.

Vic Holman said 162 days ago
Thanks Michael
true I could of done a synth, it's just one chord. I pulled a little stipulation from the first 2 Queen albums. No synths were used.

I thought I had enough for the end when I was recording, but yeah I to realized it was going to be shorter than anticipated. I almost took this in a different direction with glide free guitar and odd noises plus really bury the vocals, but i don't have the falsetto. Like something from Loveless

michael2 said 161 days ago
i know
try this: fade out the end, while fading in your opening guitar synth past and letting it echo off into space. food for thought.

Vic Holman said 161 days ago
yup
i was thinking about doing that, I think there may be a quite a alternate version going not just a remix

bud said 163 days ago
What a wonderful song Vic
This has such a great vibe with the simple bass and your gentle vocals - I absolutely love it. The guitars and production sound great too. Well done.

Vic Holman said 162 days ago
Thanks Kevin
I tried to keep all the individual parts simple yet a bit different from each other. I have my presets pretty well figured out so I can usually plug and play and not have to worry about the mix end of to much

12parsecs said 163 days ago
waiting...
vic, top notch production here my friend. love the bass tone. the main clean electric hook has a very nice chorusy tone too. i agree with ridd, could use a longer fade out, imo. that's subjective.

i don't know if i'd change anything on this song. the performances and production are excellent. if i *had* to find something to nit pick (and i don't know if you are even looking for constructive criticism) i guess the vocal gets a bit lost in the choruses (hypocrite alert! :). and the bass seemed a little rushed in parts. but, seriously, these are quite minor. i think this one's ready to go on the cd! nice post!

Vic Holman said 162 days ago
I'm always open..
.. to opinions. I'm on board about the end. Thought I had enough down and I'm not the cut and paste type. I don't think it would of synced anyway. I understand what you mean on the chorus I may have dropped the lead vocal back a bit to much there.

thanks for the observations and listen!

Lennon714 said 163 days ago
not sure why
but I love the line, "that girl wants expensive things/
this boy buys salvation army" Wonderful and catchy chorus. I'll be singing this all day for sure. I find myself with Neil and Allen. I'd like to hear more acoustic rhythm, but only because I love Jeff Lynne. I'm not saying the song should end up like that, I'd just like to hear a version like that. Great tune!

Vic Holman said 162 days ago
Thanks Eric
I think I will do an alternative to this and incorporate some of he ideas that have come up. Included bring up the acoustics. When and if I ever get around to posting it is a undecided factor.

Thanks again Eric.

And while the world makes up its mind
...I think I'll just practice this bass riff.

Great song, lovely guitar work.

Vic Holman said 161 days ago
Thanks Vic
i wonder if the world will ever decide. probably not, to much chest thumping.

the bass line is simple and steady as she goes. I thought it had a good bounce to it, so bring it up seemed right.

Ibstrat said 161 days ago
You
have something that every musician strives for- your own style.I don't know much about production, I listen more for emotional content.Your songs always deliver.I really like your guitar playing on this!

Vic Holman said 160 days ago
Thanks Mark
I think styles sneak up behind you when you are not looking. Usually when I'm playing around on the guitar in the evening I don't really think to much of what I'm doing. When something sounds interesting, then that sparks something to work on. I think a lot of it is subconscience in one way or the other.

Verrry Nice Vicar : )
I used to love the violets growing in my grass - still do. I've been informed that they are weeds. To me they're beautiful. Free flowers - what could be more beautiful. : )

Your lyrics are always a lesson in a new way to see something. And I like the lines about the boy's and girl's different sets of values in your "story" also. Sometimes it's the other way around (I'm remembering a Cheryl Crow song "Soak Up The Sun" : ) ) And another song by Jewel.

And the first bit sounds like you're speaking of Utopia - and I'm the one who is usually accused of "wishful rose colored granny glasses" : )

"Children's eyes see all hope"
"Growing up learning to cope"
Perfect.
Wonderful song, Vic, and nice pix of the guitars (the one with the picture is conspicuously missing) Also, nice to see your original "friendly fly boy" aviator avatar : )

Vic Holman said 150 days ago
Thanks CJ
Yes in my yard if a plant has color I consider it a flower. Seems the weeds are the things that grow the best here.

This is one of those on the fence type of songs where there is a bit of the duality of thoughts and lifestyles.

I've been meaning to put flyboy back up for some time. He just looks so full of sunshine!
