Keywords Jazz (426)Smooth (90)Keyboards (35)Slow (93)Low (11)Down (26)
Description A little jazz number. I tried a few things with the chords and such. How does it sound to you? I did everything on this one, drums, keys.... Quite a bit of pencil tweaking too, but now that its done none of the parts are too hard to play (or replay) if that is what is needed.

Good to hear from you. I thought it was time to get back to the rhodes sound.

paul f. page said 168 days ago
Very...
...mellow right from the start. I really like the flute and sax and your syncopated melody/rhythm. Bass adds just the right touch and is kept in perfect balance. ... You might fiddle a bit with levels at cadence points just to add a bit more contour to the volume of your solo instruments...A play-off would work well with this number, too, so that the ending is not quite so abrupt. That having been said, I like this piece very much indeed and find it well-crafted and very pleasant to listen to.
Peace.
Paul

Very thoughtful comments, I really appreciate it. I do plan to revisit this mix so your comments the solos and the ending will help.

I like the vibe and the atmosphere of your clean and crisp mix. Brilliant and cool solos - great sound!!!

peacepiano said 167 days ago
Dirigent
Thanks for noticing the crispness. I try to keep the parts to just what is needed, although this time I use 8 tracks in one section.

very nice
very cool melodies and playing. i'm loving the drum part a lot too. would love to hear this played live somewhere in a park during the day. great track.

Putting together a live group might help me come up with ways to make this last a little longer, it tough sometimes making all the choices for the "band" :)

love the arrangement nothing in excess I would love to watch this played live. Enjoyed!

Thanks for stopping by. Good to hear you like the simplicity of the arrangement.

Really nice track
I was getting into the relaxed vibe and the different places it was taking me - then it ended - too soon. What's a clavinova? Did you do everything but the drums on it?

peacepiano said 167 days ago
Bud
I was wondering about the length, I will put that on my to do more of list :)
Clavinova is a Yamaha Electric Piano, it has full sized mechanically weighted keys, kind of like a Fender Rhodes, but better engineered. They are marketed as a home piano replacement, Yamaha has other keyboards they call electric pianos that are marketed for performance. The difference is subtle to me, so I am happy with the clav. Mine is pretty old (early '90s vintage) but you can still buy essentially the same instrument new today. It has midi in and out that I use to connect to my mac. For this tune I play everything on the keyboard including the drums. (not at the same time LOL)

Moviz said 167 days ago
Love
the mix of electric piano, flute and sax all mellow sounding instruments to give that nice relaxing feel along with bass of course, even though I feel I'm on a journey. Ending was a bit abrupt I thought, so a little longer would be nice, but you have a really nice mix on this, cheers M

peacepiano said 167 days ago
Moviz
Thanks for the comments. I am thinking the best way to make it longer is to add an instrument or two, or the more difficult way is to come up with a "chorus" or "b" theme.

Interesting piece Bill
Is that a Clarinet I here you playing, or maybe a Flute. Very nice playing on the lead instruments you used, although I think the keys sound just a little ridged in some places. It doesn't take anything away from the piece as a whole though.

Thanks for sharing this with us Bill, it's a good listen to be sure.

Take care and be cool,

Ed

peacepiano said 167 days ago
Ed
You hear a little rigidness in the piano too. The arpeggios are a bit of a step up for me (I often get away with block chords) but what is needed is probably simple and subtle. Thanks for listening!

Very cool tune
Like the Clav sound (we have one in the loungeroom, and it's a very nice piece of gear) - sax sounds good too, but the flute seems to have too much reverb to me. Bass and drums work well. I was expecting a change up in key before the end - it could easily handle more development over another minute or two in a higher key.

Nice melodies.

Cheers,
Neil

Thanks for the insightful comments. A little too much shimmer in the "shimmering flute"... I think I will look for a flute sound font, that might be more natural sounding. You've given me more food for thought on making this a little longer.

thoddi said 167 days ago
How does it sound to me?
It sounds good of course:)

I immediately fell for the relaxed jazzy ride cymbal, and the rhodes piano. The sparsly arranged upright bass does something good in here as well.

For a jazz piece I think there is missing a little live feeling in the timing and movements of the melody lines. It kind of marches very straight a head... Maybe you could sexy it up a bit with some syncopes, cutting some corners every once in a while and not staying locked to the metronome... Could maybe make the ride cymbal do some catching up/syncopes of the beat here and there, and have the bass and piano follow those moves.

I'm not very enthusiastic about plastic horns... but they serve a purpose if you think of them as placeholders and as a tool to visualize how a set of real horns could play. I'll bet there are some sax players at macjams that would love to have a go at this cute piece of music.

All in all, I dig this composition. You have made a very cool bed and a "selling" hook-line/melody.

Thoddi
Hmmm... I definitely am not looking at making this a march, so I will make good use of your suggestions as I try to expand on the music. I think practice and replaying some of the parts with little or no time fixing may help some of the "stiffness". Thanks for the encouragement on the drums. Most of my music gets overwhelmed by the loops so I am trying to learn the percussion side, its a lot harder than I ever imagined!

WORD! Thoddi
This is such a cool progression. 5 times over for me now (no, make that 7), it is so catchy, poifect that way.

I'd hang with Thor's words on this one.

It lacks a "loose" cadence that would set this off nicely. That could come from sync in timing on the tracks (midi, right?) 'just right'. What do I know? (nada), but try setting a couple of tracks and playing 'live' with the other instruments to lose all the mechanical aspect of it.

This really is a cool melody.

Thanks for listening. 7 times! The more I listen the more I hear the "mechanicalness" also. So you do know something. All these great comments are helping a lot. In a couple weeks I should have a new version.

Nice ideas and mood .
I like how it works between the bass , the piano , the sax and the flute .
There are some chords that could be "jazzyfied" , by using
some extensions , like 9th , 11th ,13th .
Or fourths chords .
I suggest you try to put a hip-hop kind of drum track , or some
repetitve drums , not loud or heavy , but it would put evrything
well together .

Interesting tonal suggestions. I will have to play with those and see how they sound :) Thanks for listening in!!

Software vs "real"
Interesting. This immediately reminded me of my track "essays in idleness". Similar mood. And similar problems with a fake sounding flute. Don't get me wrong, I like your track, but there is something with sampled instruments that immediately brands them as "not real". My track is just as bad as yours.

For the rest this is a sweet track. Much enjoyed.

I know of some sax players on the site. Not sure if I know who can play flute. There are some other things I will try, the shimmering flute is particularly fake. Thanks for the comments, I checked out the "essays" :)

Very smooth work. A nice relaxing melody. I like this a lot. The flute solo is nice, but I would like to hear some horn improvisation in it. Great work.

peacepiano said 164 days ago

Thanks for the encouragement. I am definitely thinking of adding some variety and or improv to the solos as part of an expanded version.

I am not an expert but it sounded really good too my two ears.
I have only just got the Symphony Orchestra Jam pack and am having loads of fun with it too. I enjoyed this very much. Thanks.

Peace Dee.

Thanks for stopping by. I think playing a keyboard to get woodwind or brass sounds is a bit tricky because the key board plays all the notes in the same fashion. When blowing into an instrument sometimes the notes will start loud and decay and sometimes they will get louder as you hold them and other times you want the volume to be steady. The software makes a best guess, but its hard for the keyboard player to control it to sound just like a living breathing flute or saxophone player.

Nice an' Easy
I like the feel of this track. It's got a laid back sense to it.

To my ears, the Rhodes sounds a little to forced on a couple of levels. I am not sure if you quantized it, but I agree with Thoddi that it sounds a little bit march like. It seems to be too ridgid. It also seems to have all the same velocity on the keystrokes. Maybe experiment with playing the second chord each time a little lighter so you get daaaa da instead of daaaa daaaa. (I don't know if that makes any sense)

I think you did a pretty good job imitating the horns. But I would love to hear what would happen if you opened it up to a real horn player(s). I like the melody, kind of gets in your head and stays there - a good thing.

Nice work - Love to hear it re-worked a little - and longer.

Cheers

This is on my list of tunes to work over. I will likely re-record all the parts. I do understand what you mean by daaaaaa da ...

One possibility with the horns is to find an appropriate keyboard voice.

Excellent commentary. Thanks!
