Description This is the only tune I can play on the piano using two hands! I taught myself to play it to encourage my then 7 year old daughter to keep practicing her piano. She went on to be really good, sight reading and playing works by all sorts of fancy composers. I can play this, and nothing else.

The strings would have been better as solo instruments (which was my plan) but I can only find string sections in Logic Studio. String parts were played in by yours truly. No loops here (not even a tambourine).

Big thanks to Alf Solti (alfalpha - the Black Wiggle) for tidying up my midi harpsichord track and encouraging me to post.

This was really just an experiment to see what Logic Studio could do in the classical genre. I enjoyed doing it a lot - a real eye opener as to what Logic Pro/Studio can do. I hope there'll be more.

I just realised, this is the first song I've posted done completely in Logic Pro - it's a total buzz! No Ozone 3 required.

Humble bow.

Thanks Feter
I did this pretty much in an afternoon - played the harpsichord in much as it sounds (Alf fixed the coordination and velocity glitches). ThenI just layered the cello, bass and 2 violin parts in on the keyboard live. I have no idea where this song came from - I think I made it up, but who knows ;)

Always love the harpsichord. I bet you had a shirt with puffy sleeves on while you played this.

Cool,

Dave

Well Neil
This is very different from your usual style and you really pulled it off. A veritable cascade of sound. Delightful.

MarkHolbrook said 169 days ago
Neil is that you
in the suit seated at the harpischord!?!?! Just kiddin..

Well this is really very cool Neil and I love the string additions.

Ain't logic grand!? I only have express but I sure do like it.

I'D SAY BRAVO
The Things We Do For Love!
Your daughter did you a favor.
If you can handle this level of coordination on the keys, take a couple of refresher lessons - you'll be surprised.

Rhythmically tight and articulate, the Easiest place to fail.
The Counterpoint sounds natural and flows really nicely.
Fabulous Soundstage (automatic endorsement of Studio 8 and your diligently acquired skill set with it.

The descant (either strings or reeds) at about two-thirds in is a little blurry by comparison to the foregoing. Acceptable, for sure, but wanting for a bit more Headroom, it seems.

Really a KICK to hear this venture afield.
(As you know, my wife is a classical musician and I am quite familiar with the motif and forms, used here. Alf was right to push, as there is no embarrassment in this performance.)

Compliments,
Cooper

Wow, Neil
You can play all styles and do a great job. what I really like about this is the chords you make when the other instruments come in- it makes the harpsichord feel deeper, richer, if that makes any sense. For this being the only song you can play on the keyboard with both hands, it sure sounds good!

jiguma said 169 days ago
Ah, the chords on the left hand
I have to admit to pencilling in a low harmony on the left hand RoxyLee - apart from that it's pretty much a two or three fingers job (I think of it as "police typing"). There ARE some black notes in there though - they always freak me out.

Very well done!!
Neil, this was not something I imagined you might have in you. I have an even deeper appreciation for your versatility as a musician. Very nice playing. Do you know the composer who wrote it? Was it you? I really enjoyed both my listens to this. Kudos for following through on it. It turned out fabulous.

jiguma said 168 days ago
Guy
The "composer" - c'est moi! It's only a 16 bar tune with embellishments, but it was fun to do and most enjoyable.

a new aspect to your talent
Nice to have Feter tease this out of you :-) Nice bit of keyboard work, and the little tune (and your staccato playing) seemed perfect for the harpsichord. Whatever harpsichord sample you chose felt warm and listenable (I usually find them too bright and harsh for more than a short listen.) Strings were a nice wash of color, though as you mention they were a bit full and synthy for baroque (uh, not "synthy", but the "R" of ADSR on many notes sounded un-realistic, as is often the case with string samples that aren't tweaked.) Mix sounds very clear, nice placement of instruments, I like it. Arghh... wish I had time lately to participate more here! Hope this fly-by comment is helpful!

Thanks for listening and leaving a note. When I thanked Alf for "tidying up my midi harpsichord track", I should maybe have said "for making my midi harpsichord track listenable". He made it sound like I could play well enough to post. The harpsichord samples are from the Orchestral JamPack, which I've wanted to get my hands on for some time. There is a lot I have to learn about this style of music, but I'm certainly interested in doing some other tunes in a more "classical" mode.
Cheers from Oz Eduard,
Neil

Exceptional
I really didn't know what to expect when I saw this. You've done a grand job - nice production and playing - the strings (OK, a bit synthy in a few places) sound nice and really add to the piece - the harpsichord is brilliant.

Nicely played. And the strings add a warm atmosphere to the melody. I tip my hat.

Wowzers Neil! I never knew you had it in you! This is great!

The harpsichord melody is really pretty and your use of orchestration really fills the piece out nicely my friend! MAJOR PROPS!

Be well!

thoddi said 168 days ago
bravo
Impressive!

I bet you could do other stuff on those keys if you wanted. If you're able to pull this of, then you surely have what it takes.

You know... you don't always have to use two hands;)

Peter Greenstone said 168 days ago
Really nice
Great work, Neil. I think you did a very nice arrangement with this. Even though you wanted to use solo instruments I think the sections sounded good. It's always hard getting a life-like sound out of the solo midi strings. And great playing too.

Now let's have it bust into a heavy metal version. ;-)

14th bar

There, there is a short line , in the way you end
the main melody that talks to me .
I think it comes from pop more than from classical
(like the Stones in "As tears go by" )and I like this in this piece.

Very nice track . (Not only this bar :-)

As Tears Go By
Merci Henri,

"As Tears Go By" is a definite influence on this, and I'm pleased you enjoyed it.

amazing but...
true!

Neil, by jove, you're a closet (no longer) classical concert pianist! With a touch of baroque to boot.

amazing...

Go to the top of the class for playing with two hands at the same time (I can do it too, but not at the same time LOL) .It's such a wonderful thing for youngsters to learn piano as it will be such a gift for them and others when they're older. This piece sounds truly great with those counter melodies and strings. Really nice arrangement too, regards M

Vic Holman said 168 days ago
What in the heck?
That is some really stunning keyboard playing. Great melody and the additional tracks sound great and nicely placed as well.

I've never really been into baroque music myself, but this is really nice.

I know you're going to be staying up late at nights with Logic. For the relative low price you can almost feel guilty for such a steal.

Beautiful tune, full of musicianship and playing-fun. Cool work!!!

wow
you really nailed this one. i could never pull off this style, I am very impressed. the harpsichord sounds really nice too, wouldn't you just kill to have a real one sitting in your house somewhere?

sloparts said 167 days ago
Well, you said you were gonna do it,
and by God you did. Congratulations on a job well done my friend.

I'm also impressed with your motivation for learning this piece Neil. What better reason could you have, than to share music with your daughter, and use this piece to encourage her to continue in her efforts to learn to play.

A very nice job of mixing your piano playing with the other instruments using Logic.

Kudos to you Neil,

Ed

You are
a talented fellow.I agree with Henri that this has a pop feel. Reminds me of "Have you seen the little piggies".Are you sure that George Martin didn't play keyboards on this? Very Nice!

VicDiesel said 166 days ago
Charming!
Very nice tune.

The strings never really get out of a backing mode. You could be more adventurous in writing those parts. At 1:00 I though they were getting some more independent identity, but I had to wait until the passage at 1:40, that's sort of what I had in mind. Have the strings play lines that are not immediately obvious from the harpsichord part.

jiguma said 165 days ago
listening Vic
I'm afraid there was little rhyme or reason behind what the strings are playing. I just played what felt "right" in on the keyboard for each part. I'll listen for the bits you pointed out though. I have a guitar piece in a similar style which I might try to do at some stage in the future - maybe even with recorder parts :)

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Can't believe...
that this is the only piano piece that you can play after all it's not the easiest and it sounds as if it's played with great fluency. If it is the only piece then you ought to learn more - this is charming!

KK

jiguma said 165 days ago
Fluency
Thanks Martyn - the fluency is the result of the "Black Wiggle" (alfalpha) tweaking my rusty pawing of the keyboard. He done good :)
Thanks for the listen.

I'm impressed!
I'm impressed both by your playing (a man of many talents!) which is really good, but also by the sheer musicality and range you demonstrate. Is there any genre you can't manage? This is very cool - nice playing and nice arrangement. I think the strings work well. Interesting that this is your first track completely in Logic Pro. Sounds great. Excellent stuff, my man. Peace.

P.S. You look great in the photograph, by the way.
