Description
I worked with someone who wanted a version of the old standard song from the musical "The Music Man." I gave that person a version of this track, and this person passed on it. So rather than have it go to waste, I'll see if any MacJammers would like to listen to it.
I changed the melody on this version so that it's not quite the same song anymore -- it's got the same chord changes, but the melody is different enough that this is not really a cover of a copyrighted tune. You can copyright melodies, but you can't copyright a chord sequence.
Piano sound is Synthogy Ivory Steinway Bright Concert Grand (factory setting). Bass is GB Upright Jazz Bass. Drums from Drums-On-Demand Vol. 6 Jazz/Latin. (A killer set of loops, by the way, if you work in jazz.)
Controller is Technics PX-203 digital piano. 2004 eMac, 1gb ram, 1.25 ghz.
The people at Ivory told me they think my computer is on the underpowered side for running Ivory, but it runs like a champ on my machine. It's four years old, and still going like brand new. Thanks, Apple.

Oh, WOW!
I'll bet you are now (again) thinking of a new CD, John. This is FABULOUS. Your arrangement and playing are top notch in every possible way. Just love it so much. And the Ivory Steinway is spectacular!!! (I knew you'd love it.) The overall balance of bass to piano is, to my ears, perfect. This is just a wonderful arrangement. Love it, love it, love it.
Peace.

And Then
I added this to my John Stebbe playlist :) While I was listening I was thinking that you had really changed the original a lot, and then I read your description... Your arranging and composing is really shining on this tune. The piano sound is so natural. I will have to squeeze the cash out of my budget to get me one of the software pianos, I have 2 gb ram, and a 1.8 ghz G5 imac, that should be just the machine for the job.
Thanks
Bill

Superlative
is the only word that comes to mind after hearing this. You are genius at taking a well known song and changing it to make it seem that it should have been played like you play it in the first place. (was that a sentence?)
Anyway, Wow.

Ahhhh sweet!
"Till There Was You" is one of my favorite tunes of all time - and so this being what it is, I'm just sayin', it's such a sweet tribute - and one that I'm going to enjoy listening to over and over again.

But I Never Heard It Singing...
Well I actually did, because I actually used to perform this song (Beatles version) years... er, makes that ages, ago.
This is another great interpretation, John. You given it a lot of pizzazz (is that still in our vocabulary?).
Loved the Boogie-woogie intro leading into the melody... with its various treatments. Terrific idea and execution. ;)

great pic!
great tune too. man that piano sounds amazing. the ivory people do an amazing job. the bass notes lack a bit of sustain, but when it gets walking, this recording sounds like it was made in a really expensive studio. nice job! and great performances with great feel and dynamics.

Another great one
Man John - You just keep putting up the nicest music. It truly is a fantastic arrangement and your playing is just top notch. I need to get back into the studio and do some practicing.
Ivory sounds really nice here. Nice changes through-out the piece. And I really like how you have kept the melody intact, even though it is not the original. It is at once recognizable and yet new - very cool.
