Keywords just friends doesn't always last forever (1)
Description Okay so I'm a sucker for catchy, melodic pop/rock. I love Kelly Clarkson. I especially love when melodic pop is contrasted with heavily distorted guitars and sad lyrics.

This song is inspired by the beginning of a relationship that started in High School with someone I am now married to. If you know he or she is 'the one', don't let anything get in your way, even if you need to wait a while.

I had fun with this but it's not the most comfortable key for me to sing in as you can tell. I may give the vox another shot someday but this'll have to do for now

Big props to 12parsecs for the spot-on mix advice. Thanks buddy!

** please also check out the acoustic version here: http://www.macjams.com/song/44631 **
Lyrics I am waiting on a friend
Who said she'd meet me after school
Forgot my backpack in the gym
So I turn around my bicycle
I pedal fast so I'm not late
Don't wanna miss my special date
Pick up my bag and speed away
I'm seeing my girlfriend today

I know that she's the one
And I know I love her
I know that she's the one
That'll be forever

I pull my bike up to the curb
And I can barely look at her
Reach in my bag and grab the letter
That says just how I feel about her
She takes it from my hand and reads
And then she looks at me and grins
She tells me that she loves me too
And that I'm a super friend

But I know that she's the one
And I know I love her
Yes I know that she's the one
I can't breathe without her

I know that she's the one
And she knows I love her
Yes I know that she's the one
And I'll wait forever

Impossible for me to give an opinion detailed in a language which I master badly, but I just mean that I like very much your style and all the music which you bring here. Thanks...
Marc

blaky
hey thanks alot, marc. your words are very encouraging. lots more on the way.

Relic67 said 174 days ago
awesome as usual
This is fantastic. I know that people are coming down on MJ'ers who are "over-positive" in their comments, but your song seems near perfect.
the melody and changes in the chorus seem to embody what is good about indie rock.

I see no problems with the vocal.

In the spirit of not being over-positive, I will say that sometimes in this type of music, a bit of extra tanginess in the form of a slightly negative-sounding lyric, or slight melodic or harmonic dissonance really pushes the song into ecstatic territory. that's very subjective though... great song. i would definitely aspire to do something this good one day.

rsorensen said 174 days ago
relic
Just checking out your tunes now and i gotta say you can write a quality tune! Don't sell yourself short. The chorus and bridge in 'cecily' dropped my jaw.
good call regarding the dissonance. I debated adding a bridge along those lines, but decided it was best to keep this one short and to the point. I hear what you're saying though and completely agree. Thanks for the listen and feedback!

I LOVE THIS!!!
man, it's almost kinda weird...on some of your newer material it seems like your moving towards a mixture of 'blue album' Weezer and 'fantastic planet' Failure. NOT complaining at all, being as those are two of my favorite albums and one of my favorite artists of all time (failure..yah rock on!!!!!)...but yah, weirdly friggin awesome! love this tune, just enough pop rock to hook ya, yet just enough "alt" rock to keep the "trained" ear listening and HAPPY! well done my friend, bad *ss song!!!

age

rsorensen said 174 days ago
weezure
thanks age. yeah the newer stuff seems to be evolving into some sort of weird hybrid of influences for sure. weezer and failure are my top 2 bands so it makes sense! thanks for the comments.

Wow ! Ridd
This is the one that I looove sooooo much. You are incredible-
on this one.
I love all your music But I think this one is my favourite of yours now. Phew! Fantastic singing and your Music is spot on. I also love the lyrics. You Rock !

Thanks for the downoad for my Ipod. You bet :)

Peace Dee.

rsorensen said 173 days ago

thanks dee sounds like you really liked it and that makes me happy :) Hope you continue to enjoy it on your iPod

Karmatoburn said 174 days ago
super good
a little vulnerability in the vocal i like. wonderful and catchy chorus. you've got tons of song in you. keep em comin.

rsorensen said 173 days ago

thanks karma. yeah the vocals are a bit shaky but I'm glad they can pass as vulnerable too hehe. Thanks for the kind words

Lennon714 said 174 days ago
cool.
What makes this song great is the strong story telling. The music is obviously top tier, professional grade so there's nothing else I have to say about that. But the story you're telling is sweet, but not Nashville sticky sweet. Though the story may be specific to you and your superfriend, it reminds us all of superfriends past and present. Definitely reminds me of the early days with my wife. Again, it's not like the music is an afterthough. 12parsecs mix is undeniably fantastic and you handed him some out of this world tracking.

rsorensen said 173 days ago
story
it's the first song i wrote about my wife so there is definitely a story there. i certainly waited a while for her to 'come around', but it was worth every second. awwwwwwwwe. haha thanks eric. yeah if you ever want mix advice 12p's the guy to ask - right down to the last db. Although I did mix this one myself this time - just got some solid advice from him on it

man you r a machine. ive been here for months and have 1 song! keep em comin though theyre SO good. i love the theme of these lyrics. why do they always wanna be just friends? hehe. seriously great rocking song my friend. you have a real talent for melodies. love it!!!!

rsorensen said 173 days ago

thanks sf. im not sure why, but it's the best way to start a relationship imo! thanks for the listen

said 173 days ago
Yes!
Always a pleasure Ridd. Why the hell do you apologize for doing this stuff? The tune is excellent, as is the mix!

Be well!

rsorensen said 173 days ago

haha i dunno why. i seem to have a self-deprecating side that comes out when i express myself personally. thanks for the comment michael. love your latest with Vic. listening again now in fact!

somebuddy said 173 days ago
Holy crap
Nice vocal range - how did you hit that last note? I like this one a bunch. It's good that people can still have fun with music instead of being serious all the time.

rsorensen said 173 days ago
the last note
i had someone grab and squeeze when I sang it. tricks of the trade man, tricks of the trade. thanks dude I definitely had fun with this.

Skean said 173 days ago
And I'll wait forever
Love the lyrics as your voice and I'll wait forever it's little like my story before me and my wife really find they way to each other... We did a song together as a collab "Being a friend" after that we had contact w/mail after 3 years we are together for ever... Love this it's so true and as always your music is phenomenal.
Thanks for sharing D-loaded.

Take care

this is awesome. love the piano in the verse. the song is excellent, arrangement is great, tones and sounds are perfect, really great song. so when we doing that collab?

rsorensen said 173 days ago
collab
thanks man. it's in the works. i'll send you a note about it now

dajama said 173 days ago
Great stuff
Love the title, and the picture is terrific! Love the narrative aspect of the song, and the arrangement is perfect. Lovely drum sound, and the distorted guitars are just right, not overly grungy, but dirty enough to offer nice contrast to the sunny lyrics. Great vocal performance, and solid playing throughout. The piano is a really nice touch. Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.

rsorensen said 173 days ago
drums
thanks dajama. i'm pretty happy with the drums too. i find that i'm using the same DOD loops over and over in my songs lately so i try to make an effort to eq them and cut them up and rearrange as much as possible. thanks for noticing.

Lightman- said 173 days ago
Great
This is a really great song... Good sound on the rhythm guitar.... And also the drums.... I can't say it enough.. The sound is great on this... Good work... And i like the melody......

rsorensen said 173 days ago
thanks
really glad you like it, and speaking of melodies, you wrote some killer ones in your latest. great stuff!

Nick_Flash said 173 days ago
alright
Yeah it sounds like a difficult key, but you pull it off well. Love the recent pop influenced songs. I'm looking forward to the Satellite CD.

rsorensen said 173 days ago
pop
i'm definitely on a pop/rock kick lately. but yeah i don't think could pull this key off if the song didnt call for a shaky, vulnerable voice haha. thanks a lot for listening Nick. appreciate the visit

jiguma said 173 days ago
Great heavy pop
I really like the way you've done this Ridd. Fantastic tune, played and sung just right. I have no nits at all.
Top post.

thanks a lot, neil. that really means a lot to me coming from an artist like you, so I appreciate it.

BossHook said 173 days ago
Fine, fine
pop song and production. The vocal is placed so well in the mix. The low end of the band mix could use a little eq polish to really give it a pro treatment.

rsorensen said 173 days ago
mix
thanks boss! 12parsecs helped me out with some mix advice and it came a long way from the original mix, but perhaps you're right. more punch in the bass is always good. thanks for the listen and feedback.

guygrooves said 173 days ago
I think your
self depreciating side is a Canadian thing :) This song brought back some memories for me and thats what a great song can do. I maybe late but I made it to the party. You are a helluva songwriter R and the playing and singing was top drawer as they say. I wish I could get that tight of a tone out my guitar tracks. Do you mic an amp with pedal processing? Anyway this is worthy of a fav and download. Thanks for sharing.

rsorensen said 172 days ago
pod
oh canada! haha. thanks for the kind words, guy. Glad this one hit home for you. I sometimes mic but this one is straight POD to GB with some EQing.

Alannah said 173 days ago
Hmmmmm
.. at the risk of pissing off some Mjers by saying "great tune I luv it ...." ... I'm gonna throw caution to the wind and say "great tune I luv it" .... I am not one for critiquing too much as I know nothing about such things .... but suffice it to say .. that for some of us .. .maybe its just the point of saying I was here .. I listened .... and I liked what I heard ... amen. This took me back tho ... to a time ... (um late 70's ish ) .... ah the good old days !

rsorensen said 172 days ago
hmm
well for someone who knows 'nothing about such things' you sure can carry a tune. thanks for stopping by again, alannah. Glad you like this.

Vic Holman said 173 days ago
Cool Song
I really liked this, pretty dang cool,

I think the only thing is on the chorus distorted guitars, is to maybe scoop the mid's a bit, because they sound a bit over saturated in the mix and lose note distinction. Okay spit in my general direction. I'm fine by that. But I can dodge.

rsorensen said 172 days ago
mids
thanks vic. and thanks for the feedback - I really appreciate that. the original mix had really nasally chorus guitars that 12p advised me to pull back the midrange on. maybe i pulled back a little too much? i'll keep that in mind if this one goes to a final pro master. thanks dude!

lengold said 173 days ago
You know what
I'm going to say - you are definitely one of the very best here.
Downloaded. Thanks.
Cheers
Len

rsorensen said 172 days ago

well thanks len! mighty nice of you to say. we are among some amazing talented people here, including yourself, so I am truly humbled :)

12parsecs said 172 days ago
yeah!
tight tune, man. i'm a big fan of the happy lyrics over heavy guitars - you pulled it off well. and great mix! the new hat in the choruses are much better. like i said, the mix was good enough to go before, but this one has been upgraded to killer. nicely done.

rsorensen said 172 days ago
dude
thanks so much for the advice. i don't know how you can be so specific with your notes and be so spot on just by listening. you need to produce more music, man. and yeah the hats are killer. in fact i'm going back to some of my other songs and adding them to those too.

egobandit said 172 days ago
Yep
This is gonna be hard because I think I like this one better, but the other version I think would work commercially ( no offense just my opinion) I could be wrong... Great song all around I like the piano in this 10 thumbs up!

rsorensen said 172 days ago
ego
thanks. that's interesting i wouldve thought this one was more radio-friendly than the other, but maybe you're right. either way, I still can't decide which I prefer myself :) thanks for commenting.

VicDiesel said 172 days ago
Sweet
Whistful, I believe, is the word for these lyrics. That piano contributes to the general atmosphere. Cool stuff.

Pure Pop For Now People
it doesn't get much better than this. I love the perfectly simple drum track - and the chug of the guitars. You really built a beautiful machine here. Excellent vocals - you might want to reconsider your best key - this sounds great.

rsorensen said 169 days ago

thanks bud - i dunno i just can't sing confidently in F. Glad you think it sounds alright. thanks for checking this out. wish I coulda hung with you and michael in LA. maybe someday :)

Pop rocks
Love this blend of pop and rock. You got it going on Ridd. You do have that Weezer thing going on, like Lennon 714.
Hope I'm not stepping out of bounds, but I think you, me and Lennon could come up with a great one, one day.

Cool song,

Marvin of the Superfriends

oh my...
wish i could harmonise like that. You've got such a great sound. I'm also a complete sucker for melodic pop/rock, i just get such an adrenaline rush from it. I know this isn't a sad song (quite the opposite), but i just thought you'd like to know i ACTUALLY got a shiver when that chorus kicked in. It's stuff like that that i love.
Thanks for the great music

Oh, Wow!!
And I thought the Acoustic version was Awesome...this is more Awe-Inspiring. I know....MJrs must be more critical in their commentary...I read the Forum. But I find this song to be inspiring of awe within me because I aspire to pen down one of my future unwritten tunes like this. Great Hook, Make You Wanna Listen Contrast, Vocal Delivery With Surprise Vocal Ending, Nice Beginning, Nice Closing, Cool Storytelling, Scrungy Grungy Guitars....How on earth does one be so critical of such a complete gem as this tune? Did I mention the Awesome Acoustic version?
I'm downloading.

This is why pop isn't all bad,
in fact this is quite good. Catchy, just long enough, great playing and terrific indie rock vox. I found myself wanting the guitars louder, which by the way, I have never said to a guitarist before.

rsorensen said 165 days ago

most current pop is pretty bad, but there is the odd diamond in the rough. Glad you thin this is one of em. Which guitars were you wanting louder? verse, chorus, or both? Thanks for stopping by I'm a big fan of your stuff.
