Description As some may remember, this song almost never was. I had been working on it when the hard drive it was on crashed. The only version of it that I had left to work with was an MP3 I had posted here.

I was able to take that salvaged MP3 and send a copy to Alimar for some bass enhancement. Thanks, Al!

After that, it needed some lead guitar treatment. John Luper (a.k.a. TEXASFEEL) was up to the task and performed the outstanding lead guitar work heard here.

Now for percussion. I am fortunate enough to have at my disposal a very capable drummer friend whom I use for most things done by me here. However, for whatever reasons, the drum tracks we layed down for this weren't gelling with the rest of the mix. Drummers are extremely few and far between here at MacJams. There is one though that I figured would be up to the task at hand. I contacted Mike Watkins (a.k.a. kevmikwa). I don't remember how long ago it was now. A looong time ago. It seems due to a new born or some such thing he didn't have time. He contacted me later on and informed me that he was unable to let this song go.

Anyhow, to make a very long story short, I got the final drum tracks from him and mixed them in. This has been a long time in coming but I hope you all agree that the end results were worth the immense wait.

Once again, the song is about the one that got away. Aren't they all?
Lyrics With All of This
Dave Placko © 1999

The sun is shining. Birds are winging
The air is laughter. In here, I rot
Crying, feeling, hurting reeling
Awaiting rapture. Forget-me-not

With all of this I am left
With all of this I go blind
With all of this I am at your mercy
Forgetting all of this would be to kind

Running hiding. Into darkness sliding
I want departure. Remove this spot
Hearts are tearing. No one is caring
A sad here-after. Rewrite the plot

With all of this I am left
With all of this I go blind
With all of this I am at your mercy
Forgetting all of this would be to kind

Now, I'm finding the clock unwinding
In this I'm captured. Untie the knot
Love eluding; not worth pursuing
I want the answers. I want to stop!

With all of this I am left
With all of this I go blind
With all of this I am at your mercy
Forgetting all of this would be to kind

With all of this I am left
With all of this I go blind
With all of this I am at your mercy
Forgetting all of this would be to kind

Can't go wrong ...
... with Mike and John. This sounds really good - great mix - top playing and singing, and a good song. Sorry, nothing to suggest for improvement comes to mind.

A really good post Dave.

Very nice song
The acoustic sounds great, and the singing is top-notch. Lyrics are nicely done, well-crafted and pithy. The drums are terrific, as is to be expected! Some lovely touches on the lead, and what a beautiful sound on the solo. A nice mix and a terrific song. Nicely done to everyone involved. Peace.

Glad you could rescue this
This is one of my least favorite genres, yet I was able to listen to the entire song and even enjoyed it.

Attempting constructive criticism about the mix: I listened to this with headphones and, though the overall volume was never too loud, during some of the busier sections I turned down the volume a little just so I can hear things more clearly. It might just my (old) ears, but I suspect some mid-tone overload in a few areas.

bug67 said 177 days ago
Quite possible
The only file I had to work with after a hard drive melt down was an unfinished mix of an mp3. When I sent it out to Alimar to have the bass enhanced, it's quite possible it took some boosting in the mids as well. Thank you for the listen and comment.

Moviz said 177 days ago
It just

I find the barrage of
instruments a little overwhelming all at once. I'm more of a "tone it down sometimes" person. Too much compression?

Favorite part is the vocal harmonies. Fun to sing to.

Hey
Not everybody has to like every thing they hear. What fun would that be. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment though

Arrghh
... and I don't mean "Arrghh" in the fun, pirate, "look at my cool eyepatch" way. I mean it in the "I'm frustrated" way.

First things first: thanks so much to Dave for letting me sit in on this one. I remember when he first approached me, the song had me air-drumming away. A simple groove for sure, but those are the ones I like best.

Of course, I also must commend your seemingly endless patience - a level I don't think I would be capable of extending to another. Our initial convo was last October - I told you then that I wanted in but simply didn't have the time. It was last March (about a month before my 2nd son's arrival) that I finally asked if you still needed drums. You are a very understanding fellow ... quite a gift.

Kudos also to Alimar and John for some great contributions that really lift the song.

Now, for my "Arrghh": my drums are just not lining up well in a bunch of places throughout, and it pains me that their addition is actually bringing a great song down. It is most painful in the chorus-out section ... the ride figure appears so far behind the beat in some spots (4:00-4:11) that it might as well be in front of the following beat. Yuck!

Things sounded good in my DAW as I was proofing the tracks prior to shipping them off to you, so I do find myself wondering if I mistakenly sent you the drums with the wrong Tempo Alternative activated (because you'll recall that I did obsess about matching your tempo). I'll have to take a relisten and try to noodle what happened.

So, I'm pretty much bummin'. It's a good thing that the rest of the song kicks butt!

bug67 said 177 days ago
Well...
...Leave to the drummer to come up with that nit. Honestly, I can't hear it and I'm 95% sure no one else can either.

After all that history
I must say that this mix sounds great. I had listened the song once through before I read your comments. In general this sounds very good. Nice and open mix, everything well played and sung. And congratulations on the rescue operation!

Hey
I didn't know you had reposted this with drums. Great percussion track I might add, Mike. All in all it is truly a fabulous tune and I know exactly how Mike felt when he was playing air drums... I felt the same way and was air guitaring the first time I heard it. I feel fortunate to be picked out of the MJ litter to be part of this. Thanks Dave. This would be great to do live someday.

Char said 135 days ago
So very well worth the wait.

Well worth it
Hey, glad I got a chance to hear this one, it was well worth the save.
Thanks for the comment on my Harley purchase, got me to listen to your fine tune.

Lyrics sounded like they were directly from the heart, after a some rough spot in life you may have encountered. We all get them, and have to find a way to deal with or move on.

The mix sounded decent to me, especially after what you say you had to do. Nice save. You a goalie????

DWL said 70 days ago
Great sound
Vocals are excellent and what a hook.

Guitar very Richard Thompson (my hat off to Mr L) and very good

The production is also top notch. The drums gel perfectly and it has a very relaxed almost live feel.

Cheers

Dick
