Keywords space (133)banjo (29)space banjo :) (1)
Description this is a song i had written when i worked at a recording studio and brought home one of their RADAR-24 units to practise with and wrap my head around. using my bathroom as an iso booth, i tracked the banjo, bells and guitars. i later added some more stuff at the studio and mixed it. it was just for fun/practice, so i never thought to copy the source files before resigning from my post at that studio.

mj superstar, rsorensen, heard this track and loved it (maybe i'm overstating that) and thought he could write a decent melody and lyrics for it. i was sceptical, given the unusual instrumentation, but he came through in spades! amazing job, yet again, rs! and he recorded this track dead tired after singing TWO other songs earlier that evening. (i was engineering the recording.)

anyway, the musical track was already mixed and mastered, so what you are hearing is a music track that has been mastered twice. rsorensen's vocal had to be carefully squeezed in there, but i think we pulled it off. we may revisit this at some point in the future and try and squeeze drums in there too. (or just retrack the sucker.)
Lyrics The end is here again my friend
For us to say goodbye to who we have been
As I ascend into the stars
My heart will stay with yours wherever you are

And though I am light years away
I can't wait until that day
When I will see you again

And the suns they burn so bright
They remind me of that night
When you looked into my eyes
And you made me realize
There was nothing I could do
About the fire within you
That flows throughout my veins
And takes away the pain
Again

My mission's over finally
I've brought so much for you to see
All things beautiful and new
But none of them compare to you

my friend, gotta hand it to you. fine performance once again. thanks for singing it. (and writing a killer melody and lyrics.)

rsorensen said 180 days ago
back at you
Thanks to you for letting me get in on this one. I remember the first time I heard it how blown away and inspired I was. The opening static/banjo combo, that soaring melodic bassline, the warm acoustics, the phasing ambience, and that incredible yet subtle drop out and build at the 3 minute mark. I definitely was tired singing this one but you managed to make my taxed, raspy vocals sound pretty decent. I wrote the lyrics to this in the heat of my whole 'outer space relating to everything' phase I went through while writing the songs on the Satellite Tragedy record lol. Really glad you spent some time finishing it off. Sounds great. Just say the word when you want to revisit it and I'm there.

12parsecs said 180 days ago
but
space does relate to everything, if you think about it. :) thanks again for coming up with the aforementioned killer melody and lyrics. and feel free to chime in and reply to any comments below, even before i get to them. it's half your song, after all. (although, i did insist on this one being under the 12p name, as it's one of my more favourites. =P )

thanks, feter
yeah, i got the banjo from my brother for my birthday many years ago. i was grateful, but i thought i'd never use it. i don't sit around and play on it for fun, but i throw it into a track whenever i can now. who knew. and it is indeed a pleasure to work with rs. thanks for the comment!

tokai said 180 days ago
breathtaking
Wow wot a wicked track. Sounds crisp and amazing. Great job chaps. The vocals are so beautifully rich, the whole song refreshes the parts other tracks cant reach!

12parsecs said 180 days ago
thank you
yeah, ridd has a stellar voice. i am very jealous.

and thanks for comments about the clarity and whatnot. it was a bit of a struggle getting vocals to 'fit' into a track that has already been mastered, but we may have got lucky this time. if anything, the vocals might be a tad loud and maybe the overall volume is a little high. i'll do some a/b tests against other tunes before i go thinking about remixing it. :)

thanks for listening!

Karmatoburn said 180 days ago
insanely
good. Stops thinks of other ways to describe happy place..can't..continues holding goosebumps, slowly rocking back and forth. I'd fav 100 times if I could

go ahead and press that 'favourites' button as much as you like, if it makes you feel better. :) thanks for the kind words!

Tambourine
Wow - 2 of my favorite macjammers. This is beautiful. The vocals are outstanding and the lyrics are lovely. 12parsecs, the composition is gorgeous. The entire sound of this is beautiful, full and rich. I have to say this is one of the best songs I've heard here. Really really nice. The banjo is perfect. Thank you.

12parsecs said 180 days ago
tambourine
by now people are thinking 'where are the tambourines??' hehe. i like song titles that are meaningless or misleading. but seriously, how would an orchestra comprised entirely of tambourines sound? there's only one way to find out. maybe that'll be my next post.

thanks for checking this out. long live the banj!

thanks dave. scott really made musical magic with his little 'experiment' of his here hehe. i'm honored to be a part of it. really enjoying your recent stuff too.

Hey Daniel. Haven't seen you around here for awhile. Thanks for checking this out. Hopefully Scott and I will do some more collabs in the near future.

I tip my hat to you. PRO STUFF.

No one could argue that.

rsorensen said 179 days ago

thanks dave. scott definitely has the studio setup to record and master this stuff very professionally, but equipment means nothing without the skills and musicianship to pull this off. Glad you like it. Hope you keep posting songs - you're on a roll.

thanks to both of you! i/we/all have fun creating.

thanks eric! I think you just did. oh btw - gonna work on 'wasted' today ;)

Flush With Inspiration...
Emerging from the bowels of your *bathroom session*, this piece has been well-plumbed by both of you, resulting in a very pleasing song. ;)

The straightforward acoustic musical bed, joined by the relaxed vocal that grows stronger as it progresses, works very well indeed.

Nice work from both of you. ;)

12parsecs said 179 days ago
fulsh. hehe.
thank you very much, joe. yeah, i don't know how ridd can maintain such tone while singing so softly. *so jealous!* and those lyrics! it sounds like he may growing tired of his 'space' phase, but i'm a stephen hawking reading, ubergeek - so i love them.

dajama said 180 days ago
Excellent, excellent stuff
The vocal works perfectly over the instrumentation - a great merging of two talents. The instrumentation is original and very cool, and the singing is top-notch. A great song, and really well produced. Sounds excellent. Nicely done to both of you. Kudos. Peace.

12parsecs said 179 days ago
well, thank you.
i like non-conventional instrumentation, but delivered in a way that is still accessible to most listeners. there's only two synth parts, the record pops at the beginning and the build at near the end - the rest are guitars. (i built this cool patch on my ooooold digitech rp6 guitar processor. very synth pad like.)

thanks for listening!

12parsecs said 178 days ago
i lied...
i think there's 3 synth parts. my bad. i forgot about the synth pad over the end. (you can hear it fade out at the very end of the song.) man, is my memory that bad??

dajama said 178 days ago
I feel your pain
whenever anyone asks me how many guitar tracks are on one of my songs (and there are often a lot...) I always have to open up the GB file and count them. Add that to my wonderful habit of dashing downstairs and standing in the middle of the room wondering why I came down, and you have a wonderful portrait of someone with the memory capacity of a gnat! Peace.

12parsecs said 177 days ago
ha!
> 'Add that to my wonderful habit of dashing downstairs and standing in the middle of the room wondering why I came down'

i thought it was just me! :) man, when i moved a couple of years ago, when i was packing, i did soooo much of that up and downstairs, forgetting what i was there for, that i thought i was going crazy! good exercise, though.

lengold said 179 days ago
What a superb
collaboration - fantastic song. Pro level musicianship - vocals and production. A joy to listen to.
Cheers

12parsecs said 179 days ago

this was a joy to make. especially when i heard ridd singing the vocals, taking it to that next level. thanks for the comment!

Moviz said 179 days ago
It's physics
that applies to everything, but..... What a wonderful song and collab.... love the tinkling opening and how it continues throughout as though it's a clock counting down the time. The vocals are excellent ,though I thought could have been raised a tad at the opening. I'm not criticising though, coz I love it and the lyrics, cheers M

12parsecs said 178 days ago
physics.
physics definitely applies to music. and there's so much to learn on that front.

thanks for listening. i hope the 1/8 note banjo didn't get too monotonous after a while. i'm a big fan of carrying a theme throughout a song, even under varied progressions, but i can't play the thing that fast... so you're stuck with slow and steady. no fancy pickin' here.

Wow guys - it doesn't get much better than this. 12pc we are lucky to have you here at MJ's, you definitely have an ear for mixing. This sounds better than anything I can put together (of course my studio is a small corner of a tiny bedroom so that may have something to do with it).
Great vocals as always Ridd - you really complete the track.

nick

rsorensen said 179 days ago
sounds
thanks nick. i agree it sounds pretty damn good, but it's the songwriting that's most important and you have absolutely nothing to worry about in that department. i also agree we're lucky to have 12p here. MJ is exactly what he needed to kick his butt into finishing his awesome songs. thanks for listening

12parsecs said 178 days ago
yes,
thanks nick! macjams offers the incentive i needed to hurry up and finish my plethora of unfinished tunes.

working at the studio was a really great experience, though i was only an assistant engineer, part time for a year. i miss all the outboard analogue gear. *sigh*. though this recording was mixed on their ssl, the mic was a cheap apex and the pre was this a.r.t. thing... not worthy of the radar and ssl they would later go through.

my studio now is just a converted room in my apartment. obviously much smaller scale, but i've learned to get the job done with the tools i have. thanks for listening!

obbster said 179 days ago
Fucking Love it.
You make an awesome team. This song is stunning. The vocals are amazing, great harmonies in there. Really love this track.

rsorensen said 179 days ago

thanks obb. yeah this is like our 12th or 13th recording we've collaborated in some way on. hopefully more are on the way. glad you like it, thanks for the comments

Thanks for the backstory in the info, very interesting
Great vocals and the guitar sound you have got is to die for
I feel cheated however...where are the tamborines???
;-)
Fabulous stuff guys

12parsecs said 178 days ago
tambos
you have to listen very carefully for the tambourines. hehe. thanks for listening!

the secret to the gtr sound... bathroom acoustics. j/k. i think it's cause i got to use the ssl g-series eq on them. i miss that board... not the changing bulbs all the time, or the ginormous patch bay, or the recall that didn't work on the first couple of channels... meh, maybe i don't miss it. :)

Awesome!
Great collab here and a really solid song. the acoustics and vocals really shine nicely.

Regarding drums: I don't know if you really need them, but if you were to add some i would suggest holding off to around the 3 minutes into the song. just a thought

12parsecs said 177 days ago
thanks vic!
yeah, i/we were thinking it would be nice to have the drums and heavy guitars at the end, just as you were suggesting. looks like it may be worth revisiting this one to get those extra parts in. (which means retracking it, but that's coo.) thanks for listening!

jiguma said 177 days ago
Good post!
Great singing and playing - personally, I'd add the drums, but it does have a lot of dynamics without them. Two nits - first, my preference would be for some more space in the mix. It kind of stays at full tilt for the duration, and there doesn't seem to be too much air in the mix. Secondly I can't figure why you'd leave that noise at the start.
Really good performances though and fantastic vocals - I'm very impressed.
Neil

12parsecs said 177 days ago
great comment!
thanks for the honest critiques! the first of your 'nits', the mix. you are absolutely right. this puppy's been mastered twice, as a matter of fact... so, yeah it's pretty squashed (and a little loud overall too, the more i listen against other tunes). i didn't want it to be noticeable that the vocals were after the fact on an already mastered track, but i think i may have to take the multiband compressor i'm (re)mastering with back a notch.

as for the static at the beginning, that was just me with a toy i had access to (a korg triton) coming across a patch and going 'oooOOoo, cool! it sounds like a record'. it really has no relevance to the song, except that it *might* lead someone to thinking it's an old track off an LP (an old banjo album). as useless as it is, it's staying. it reminds me of the day i recorded it.

thanks again for the comments!

Music
I love hearing a song that makes me forget about recording techniques, lyrics, chords, instruments, etc., and just lets me enjoy listening to music. I guess that's the point, but not many of us can achieve that, as you have here. And yes, I will be buying the Satellite Tragedy album.

Russ

12parsecs said 175 days ago
cool,
mission accomplished then! i'm certainly glad to hear that, as it is hard for me to take a step back and hear the song as a whole. i still notice the inner workings, and some production points that could be improved. but certainly, thanks for listening and commenting!

ps. i'm sure ridd will glad to hear you are on board the satellite tragedy train. it's a great album... you won't be disappointed!

sonic perfection
this is how you write, perform and produce a song... textbook... and you won't learn it from a book... tons of heart... the banjo/guitar provide such a beautiful landing pad for this... the lyric is great, and the melody is outstanding... heartwrenching... I'm very impressed... flawless performances all around...

thankfully no one flushed while you rolled tape, although from the sounds of this... I'd say that you'd be able to make that sound great too!

sincerely wonderful job

rsorensen said 173 days ago
thanks
12p wrote an amazing song that i was totally inspired by. it wasnt the first time either. if you check out my song 'Gone', it was the same idea - he wrote and performed the music and I the lyrics/vocals. i think it's just as powerful as this one.
funny you mention the flush while rolling thing... there's a take of the BG vocals where my phone starts ringing and apparently the ringtone is in tune with the song. probably coulda got away with leaving it in hehe. thanks for the kind words

thanks mokuses! your latest is of the usual excellence as well. i think the end of ours, though, needs something else. with the vox in now (which are beautiful, thanks again ridd) the last little bass line resolution is kinda lost. maybe we'll have to retrack this with a 'big' ending to try to regain some impact. thanks for checking it out!

the banjo again. this is great, Ridd did a real nice job. did i say I'm glad you're both here (makes it feel like a little scene). first rate production all around (are you an engineer in real life?). just great. really love thath banjo floating amidst the soundscape you created.

real life.
i like to think i am a sound engineer in real life. :) i'm self taught, then worked at a studio as an asst engineer for about a year, but garnering most of my experience for being in a band for many years and recording our demos, and going to the studio and watching real engineers record our stuff on occasion. i started my own project studio about a year ago and try to make ends meet with local musicians, post audio for small animation projects and, most recently, video game sound. it's been a fun, rocky road. thanks for checking out my stuff!
