Keywords can't think of anything witty at the moment (1)
Description I've really been getting into playing acoustic since the MJ coffee shop challenge; so here is another indie-folk-pop tune. I'm thinking Big Star meets Loggins and Messina (a very guilty pleasure). There are absolutely no production values to this, and it's fine with me.It's about a girl I know who is a really young single mom, awkwardly trying to figure out her next move. I think she'll be fine in the long run.

I had added drums, bass and piano to this but decided i preferred it stripped down. hope you like.
Lyrics you won't say where you've been
but everybody knows
you've been out with him

there's a little girl at home
but you dropped out of school
so you could work at night

Chorus:
you're life isn't going
how you thought it would
i hope that
you don't make the same mistakes i did
it's time to figure out
exactly what to do with you
and Stella too

your boy is finally home
a mustache on his face
so you kicked him to the curb

you got lots of bills to pay
childcare ain't cheap
what you gonna do?

Chorus:
you're life isn't going
how you thought it would
i hope that
you don't make the same mistakes i did
it's time to figure out
exactly what to do with you
and Stella too

what's your angle?
are you looking for attention?
you're not stupid
but i'm beginning to wonder
it's time to figure
out exactly what to do about
Stella too

Loved this one Michael. Great singing and guitar. Simple yet beautiful. Very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing it.

michael2 said 141 days ago
thanks gail60
so glad that you liked this one.

biba_nova said 141 days ago
one of your best michael
puts me in mind of chris stamey/the dbs

michael2 said 141 days ago
thanks Bryn
i love how you are the king of progressive electronic sounds, and yet you have such a wide array of musical history residing within you. thanks for listening.

biba_nova said 141 days ago
Thanks Michael
I don't think I am the king of anything actually but you are right about my diverse tastes, and this song of yours is up there with some of the best stuff I have ever liked

12parsecs said 141 days ago
beautiful
dood! you don't need fancy production on this one. the music speaks for itself! i love this bone dry, all acoustic approach. great writing, well played. and wicked harmonies. really enjoyed this.

12parsecs said 141 days ago
oh yeah
i forgot to mention the only blemish i noticed. near the end there's some sort of edit or glitchy sound. (almost like the sound of phantom power being shut off to a mic.)

michael2 said 141 days ago
12parsecs
thanks man. glad you liked. when i listen on headphones, the mix sounds so different than without (like the harmony sounds too loud). i think the glitch is me getting a fingernail caught on the strings or something; that chord change at the end just came to me at the moment and i botched it, but decided it was fine. thanks so much for listening.

Vic Holman said 141 days ago
Okay
I immediatley hear the Loggins and Messina influence.

very nice pickin sir.

It's kinda saddening when you come across a sad soul who is confused and lost to the world. Worse yet when you see them go deeper into the hole that hurts them the most.

michael2 said 141 days ago
thanks Vic
glad you liked. i actually don't know many L&M songs, but there are a few that get stuck in my head (even though we ain't got money...). thanks for listening.

jiguma said 141 days ago
Lovely song Paul ....
.... I mean Michael ;) You simply write one excellent song after another. This is another which has a very Beatly sound, although I can hear L & M in the downward run on the guitar. I am/was a huge L&M fan.

Really good post.
Neil

michael2 said 141 days ago
you are
too kind. it's pretty amazing how much your influences can thoroughly infest your soul huh? thanks a bunch.

Peace Dee.

michael2 said 141 days ago
thanks Dee
so happy that you liked this one I wasn't sure about it at first.

Karmatoburn said 141 days ago
luv it
I listened without reading the description, and now going upon reading it, I say, absolutely, you nailed it without the accompaniment. I'm sure that would would have been cool as well, but what you've done here, is beautiful and intimate. Well done, more please

michael2 said 141 days ago
here is
the funny part: after recording the other parts that you can't here in this mix, i was thinking that I am terrible at ragtime-y piano and that I was going to ask you to play the part if I ended up going in that direction. i'm so happy thta you like the song.

tokai said 141 days ago
Beautiful
song, soothing guitar work and very well performed. Sweet vocal harmonies with excellent lyrics. Classic tune.

michael2 said 141 days ago
thanks Tokai
glad you like.

dolby said 141 days ago
Mmmm....
....I dream of chord progressions like this - and the ability to play finger pickin style. A sweet tune and love the double tracked vocals. Simple and understated and very good. As always:-))

Phil

michael2 said 141 days ago
thanks Phil
don't know when I picked up the finger picking, but it's actually really simple; when i hear others do it right i get green with envy. my version is super simplified (kind of fake actually). those type of chord progressions are the result of listening to american bands that want to be english bands trying to be american bands. or something like that. thanks again, really nice of you.

Ejh said 141 days ago
I hear it all...
...Chris Bell and Alex Chilton in the vocal blend, and Jim Messina in the guitar pattern, and that could be Chilton and Bell, too...

This is a really moving song, Michael. The lyrics are great. You've done a great job of delivering it sweetly, simply and directly...

Ed

michael2 said 141 days ago
thanks Ed
hard to escape the grasp of your influences sometimes. hadn't listened to it in awhile, but after your comment on my other acoustic number, i pulled ouyt Chris Bells record: heavenly. thanks for the reminder, and for listening and the kind words too.

Mystified said 141 days ago
What a delightful song....
So gentle and kind in the way you sing the words.
A really nice song.... so very nicely done.

'great production values' aren't needed here--the sincerity rises above all that.

Thanks for sharing this here :)

YAY!
More Coffee House tuneage!

Lovely as is Michael. Sometimes stripped down is best.

Guitar playing is very nice, but I REALLY liked your vocal work in this friend!

Another worthy offering...

Be well!

Doadars Uncle said 141 days ago
This is a real sweet song
I have a niece who fell into this same situation. Touching song. I hope things work out, too...

You know
I can't think of anything witty to say at the moment either. But, this is a really excellent song. Just great.

I would actually like to hear the full version, too. If you're ever having a slow day, please post it.

Dave

BTW, I commented earlier, but it didn't register.

Great song, my friend.

Michael, this is very good!
While others are stuck on sludgy, slimy things you keep on producing with ease and great great quality.
We are lucky to have someone like you!

Beautiful. what a gorgeous thought behind the lyrics. A beautiful song, your voice and guitar were perfect. I really am a sucker for the "unplugged" versions of songs and this is wonderful. very nice little harmonies in there. thank you for sharing this.

I'm at a loss here Michael
the insight and compassion in your lyrics and vocals make this a really powerful song. She's lucky you're around. Very nice guitar playing as well - reminded me of McCartney in a way. Excellent song.

The song is great, and so is the sound.

guitapick said 137 days ago
Man...
...this is really fine work...good choice on just the guitar (just my opinion)...says it all.

Reminds me a bit of early Crosby Stills and Nash...

I have a good friend who I'd like to play this to...your lyrics are superb...

Very nice
Can't imagine this any other way than stripped down like this, which maybe means this is how it's supposed to be! Lovely lyrics, and really elegantly and honestly expressed sentiment. Nice guitar sound and playing, and your vocal on this is great - the harmony is spot on. very cool. Nicely done. Peace.

gregd said 135 days ago
Great feel
Michael, your recent acoustic tunes are just soulful gems. You shine through on these songs---nothing to obscure the music.

I get a positive Elliot Smith vibe from this tune. Really like it.

Guitar. Great harmony just a free flowing tune. Well done with some great writing as well.
