Keywords The (188)One (40)Love (979)Song (195)Acoustic (490)Rock (1143)Ballad (146)
Description This is a song I wrote about 20 years ago and could never quite get what I wanted when recording it. Last summer I went to visit some very dear friends who have been two of my biggest supporters in this money pit of a music career and my friend Greg had the idea that the song should be much faster than we originally played it. We tried to record it many times at a slower speed but it never seemed to be what we had envisioned. He was dead on. I like this version much better than any of the others I have recorded in the past. A huge thank you to all here who have given me guidance and advice as well as those not afraid to speak their mind when it comes to what they hear. I am open to all who have something to say about the production value of my songs. So feel free to comment on the production quality, arrangement, and mix.
Lyrics Too lazy to type them out.

My friend your kindness is only outshone by your talent. Thanks for the visit.

Sounds good Guy
Everything works really well here - great harmonies. Nice sound on the electric, although there are a few paces where it's still firing away when the vocals are happening - just a little distracting. Can't hear any bass, and the track could sound much better if it was audible - you've gone to so much trouble to get everything else sounding good.
Congratulations,
Neil

guygrooves said 143 days ago
Thanks Neil
I am grateful for the advice of such an accomplished musician and engineer. I wonder if the the bass takes a hit when converting to mp3 as it was audible on the aif. I agree I could have got on the rides for the guitar doing the fills. I heard this after I uploaded it. Thanks again for your visit and advice and guidance.

lengold said 143 days ago
Lovely song
and very well played/sung. I agree that the bass could be a bit more prominent in the mix.
Cheers

Thank you Yemen
I am flattered you like my work. You are one talented young man. I have to confess about the harmonies lol I used Melodyne to tune them, it is one killer piece of software. I did sing the tracks so I guess its only a half cheat lol. Thanks for the visit and kind words.

Hi Guy
First of yours I've heard and am liking a lot about this. There's some really nice vocal work going on and there's some neat ideas with the guitar.

If I could make a couple of suggestions I think that the lead guitar which plays most of the way through is a bit distracting - this could drop out more and become more of an 'accent' when needed (with a smidgen less phase effect on it). Also the rhythm guitar that's 'strummed' sounds a little jangly, or perhaps a bit high in the mix. Lastly, get the voice higher up in the mix. You've got a lovely, smooth voice and it's getting lost in the mix.

Ooops that turned into a real crit - didn't mean it to sound like I don't like the song - I DO!

Good stuff, and welcome to MJ's

Phil

Nice of you to stop by
And nice to meet you Phil. I appreciate everything you had to say and understand completely. I am going to re record the rhythm guitars and get on the rides for the lead. I am hoping a certain bass player here will lay a track down for it so I can get rid of the Bass loops. I am always looking for honest critiques, as it in my opinion the only way to elevate the work itself as well as my technique. Thank you for your visit and advice. Take care.

Well Done
my friend.Reminds me of Wilco in a lot of ways which is a good thing in my book.Vocal work is what I like the most here and although I prefer to see some lyric sheet, the fact you are honest enough to admit you're too lazy is refreshing.Still appreciate what you've got going on here.

Daniel

guygrooves said 142 days ago
Thanks Daniel...
I am flattered at the comparison. Wilco is an all time favorite of mine. I hope to hear something new from you soon. I have always been lazy and never had a problem with it lol. All the more time to smell the flowers.... or coffee if I wake up early enough lol. Thanks for the kind words and the visit.

sloparts said 142 days ago
I like what I can hear Guy,
but being a little deaf, it's hard to pull all the lyrics out of the mix. Your vocal and your voice sounds terrific, you have a very rich deep voice my friend.

I agree this needs a remix. All the elements are there, but it's a little distracting in places and it needs more definition and space between the various instruments. Easily fixed in the mastering process.

This is a wonderful song that deserves a new mix so it can shine like it should Guy. And by the way, I can't imaging this at a slower tempo. I suspect it would sound draggy and lose all it's energy. And believe me this has a lot of energy to the song.

Great piece of work Guy, now go fix the mix my friend.

Ed

guygrooves said 142 days ago
Will do...
Thanks Ed I hear what your saying man and when I have the time it will be done. This was an experiment to see if I could fix a mediocre mix and shine it up. The original is way worse lol. I think I pulled it off. When I fix it I may put all 3 up to show the progression and get some more feedback. Thanks for the visit my friend.

Flow
Thanks for visiting my recent songs. Time for a return visit!

This is a delightful track. Great song, and I love the flow of this. I don't know what it would sound much slower, but this is not rushed, it just has a great southern rock flow to it.

The mix is not bad at all. It sounds good and open. The bass is bit timid. Did you play it yourself? Many guitar players are afraid to apply the sort of force to bass strings that they require. But it could also be the mix: the low and low mid is a bit undefined, it kind of drones on. Other than that I like the sound of this.

guygrooves said 142 days ago
Thanks
for the direction and advice Vic I appreciate your visit and pearls of wisdom. I have always had a bit of trouble with the low and mids I would appreciate any advice you might have on how to do what you are suggesting. I can definitely hear it on your songs and aspire to clean mine up to the same standard.

VicDiesel said 142 days ago
Hm
For instruments in the mid range it's usually a good idea to just cut at the low mid: remove the low frequences of pianos and guitars so that they don't get in the way of your bass instruments. However, at the end of the track it sounds like the guitar does indeed only have a nice mid sound, and the droning comes from the bass.

In that case you need to clean up the bass: play it a bit punchier, don't let it ring too long. And then cut all some mid out of the bass, probably around 500Hz to make it sound a bit thinner.

Just suggestions.

guygrooves said 141 days ago
Thank you sir....
I shall take this to heart and give it a go on my next attempt. Thanks again Vic.

this is a great song, i love the tone you have for the guitars its very relaxing and sets a great mood for the vocals to sit over. pretty sweet picking part over the chords too. and your vocals sound great, nicely mixed. i really enjoyed this song keep the superb work coming.

Nice Work
I like the licks between the verses. It reminds me of the band Luna. It's one of those songs that you could see youself driving on a long country road and taking in a breath of fresh air. Your vox sound great, especially with the harmonies. I liked this alot. Thanks

guygrooves said 141 days ago
Thanks
You are the second person to say something about this song and driving, I am not aware of Luna but will try to find some of their stuff. Thank you for dropping by and listening.

Remark80 said 141 days ago
Malibu
Look for the song "Malibu" by Luna. I think you will really like the guitar work as it resembles a bit of what you got on this tune. Let me know when you find it and give me your thoughts.

guygrooves said 140 days ago
Ok
will do

Vic Holman said 141 days ago
nice tune
has a nice easy feel of the So Cal acoustic rock ala Jackson Browne & Eagles. can't add to whats been said. But a solid tune for sure

Thanks Vic
Always nice to hear from you. Thanks for the visit.

This rolls along very nicely
I love the song but like others I'd bring the bass up and hold back a bit on the lead guitar that wanders in and out.

Nice tone on the guitars and good vocal work.

Cheers

Very much I am flattered you like it. I am just now listening to some of yours and I can say that I have a new favorite Jazz artist. Thanks again for the visit and very kind words.

THis
has a nice rambling alt country sound. You have a distinctive voice and the wandering lead guitar reminds me of the guy from 10,000 Maniacs - it works for the tune but like was said before, maybe the vocal can just be put out front more or the lead can be mixed up and down to avoid clashing.

guygrooves said 124 days ago
Thanks again Boss
Nice of you to visit, listen, and offer an opinion. I really do appreciate it. Thanks.

Elevator_Funk said 114 days ago
good song...
but I disagree with the friend who told you to speed it up. Up tempo beats are taking the feelings out of your lyrics.

If your original slower version was not working, maybe you should try it even slower (if you can stand it)

If that makes the song too long you might have to consider which parts of the lyrics are the most important and to some trimming. (I don't sing, so I'm not afraid to say that).

Your production techniques are better than mine, so I can't comment on that. I hope my comments are taken the right way and don't sound too critical, I do like your songwriting.

guygrooves said 111 days ago
Thanks for the visit E_F
I appreciate the advice and your views.

dajama said 113 days ago
Very nice
A lovely song, and an interesting story about the speed; it's often the key to getting a song right in my opinion. This sounds just right to me at this tempo. The lyrics are really nice, and the playing is good. Most of the things I noticed about the performance and production have already been mentioned, I see, but for the record: I'd bring the vocal up a little, the bass needs to be more prominent, and I agree that the guitar gets a little distracting. However, these are tiny things when set against the fact that you have a really good song here. Music that makes me want to drive along an open road with the top down! Very cool. Nicely done. Peace.

Dajama
thank you for the listen and kind words. This one is under re record currently... again lol. I am not giving up on it lol. It's new incarnation is coming together nicely, with a slight change to tempo, arrangement, and melody. It'll be up in a week or two. Thanks for the supportive comments.

A solid pop-rock song
This has a very polished sound and feel to it. It sounds great, I like the way the guitar leads us and the vocals color the landscape. Your harmonies really add to the melody. Nice guitar sound BTW. I think you got this one right.

guygrooves said 111 days ago
Thank you!!
Very nice of you to say so. I only hope you like the next incarnation of it as much lol. Nice to meet you.

Bob6stringer said 60 days ago
Great precursor to your latest re-do!
Having heard the new version ( Sept '08 ) I had to stop over here and give you the benefit of my perspective, since you shared yours. And it turns out this is still a fine tune, but you really made significant changes on the re-do. For starters, the 10 bpm or you shaved off in the redo make for more emotion in the groove; in contrast, this one sounds like a '70s country ballad -- not bad, but more poppy, but you have to listen more closely to the lyrics to grasp the weight of the message.

Also your guitars, particularly the lead, carries more fire on the remake. Still, this remains a really good tune either way, that's the most important thing.

guygrooves said 50 days ago
Thanks Bob
I hadn't noticed you left a comment till now, and thank you for the kind words.
